Toasted ham cheese tomato today. Extra
Toasty
A metaphor for best team.
Occasional gastronomic delights can be included but we will need solid staples to be the basis.
Hence Billings/Ross/Webster/DMac/Wood and the like to feature prominently when available and represent our ham/cheese/tom
Then the weekly melts....mmm heading to the kitchen now

Sheesh this is tough, much competition. Whoever has a top pre-season and still healthy will probably get first crack. The best 22 for round 1 is too far away to pick now, but this is what a healthy team might look like if picked today:

- Saints -
F - Butler - King - Higgins
HF - Gresham - Hayes - Membrey
C - McKenzie - Windhager - Hill
HB - Webster - Battle - Sinclair
B - Wilkie - Howard - Coffield
R - Marshall - Steele - Crouch
I - Ross - Jones - Paton - Wanganeen-Milera - Clark

- Zebras -
F - Sharman - Heath - Peris
HF - Phillipou - Keeler - Hotton
C - Wood - Byrnes - Billings
HB - Connolly - Cordy - Highmore
B - McLennan - Van Es - Adams
R - Campbell - Bytel - Owens
I - Allison

Apparently the AFL will have 5 on the bench next year.

How I'd have them lining up in round one:

Seniors

B: Wilkie, Howard, Paton
HB: Coffield, Battle, Sinclair
C: Hill, Steele, Billings
HF: Gresham, Hayes, Owens
F: Higgins, King, Membrey

Foll: Marshall, Crouch, Winghager
Int: Clark, Jones, Ross, NWM
Sub: Wood

Sandy

B: Webster, Cordy, Adams
HB: Connolly, Van Es, Highmore
C: McKenzie, Bytel, Peris
HF: Allison, Sharman, Hotton
F: Butler, Heath, Keeler

Foll: Campbell, Phillipou, Byrnes

From putting together those teams my takeaways would be that we could probably still use Stocker as another mid/small defender option as the depth is a little lacking in those areas. There's a huge opportunity for Hayes or Sharman to stake a claim on a starting 18 spot this year up forward alongside King and Membrey. Here's hoping that Heath is ready to chip in a few games this year because he's probably going to be needed at some point given Marshall's injury history.

It's time for the likes of Paton, Coffield, Battle, Billings, Jones and Clark to truly establish themselves as high quality senior players or they will be overtaken by the next generation quite quickly. Ross will have to maintain his high standards from this season to keep his spot as well.

Ross on a half back flank for Sandringham after finishing top 5 in the b and f
He could be BnF in a premiership year, a brownlow medalist and most would still have him dropped to Sandringham.

With Ross coming back it gets confusing when people mention Ross as it’s not immediately clear as to whether they’re referring to coach Ross or to player Ross.

Or to our new playing coach Ross Ross

HF: Butler - Hayes - Gresham
F: Higgins - King - Membrey
Foll: Marshall - Steele - Ross
Int: McKenzie Clark Jones Coffield Windhager

SANDRINGHAM

C: Wang.Mil. - [Stocker] - Byrnes
HF: Peris - Allison - Phillipou

Not considered: Billings (inj.)

I fully expect for that to change pretty swiftly though… and of course, that assumes everyone besides JB is fit for that start of the season…

That's a strong Sandy side.

Just a thought, but if Butler doesn’t pull his finger out and cut out the selfish Hollywood shit, I could actually see RTB giving Peris a gig ahead of him.

His sheer speed would appeal as a pressure forward.

IMO the finger got pulled out about half way through last season.

It's difficult AF without knowing exactly what structure RTB will be looking for. I've gone for a couple of gut calls in that 18-22 group around who I think Ross will like (Owens, Wood, Butler & Jones primarily) ahead of your Clarks and Billings and such who I think will be asked for form in their "preferred positions" at VFL level.

Provided everyone is fully fit, my thoughts on the ideal round 1 team would be like:

B: Wilkie - Cordy - Paton
HB: Battle - Howard - Sinclair
C: Hill - Crouch - Wood
HF: Butler - Membrey - Billings
F: Higgins - King - Gresham
Foll: Marshall - Steele - Ross
Int: McKenzie Clark Jones Coffield Windhanger

Have seen a few teams posted and think Cordy wasn't recruited to play for Sandy, regardless of what I/we think of his abilities. Also feel like Ross would love him for some reason.

Gresham for mine isn't a midfielder, he's a forward that could play higher up the ground, but don't think he's the most effective centre bounce player and with everyone else going through midfield his biggest impact would be as a forward.

Hayes needs some time to recover from his knee, and not 100% sold on his ability to be an effective AFL player week in week out, although I did love his first game last year!

Looking at the team for proper balance, Campbell or Hayes may need to take one of the interchange positions as ruck relief, perhaps McKenzie spot, wait and see how Ross plays things.

All in all, that's a very competitive team, and Sandy will be good to watch as well injuries pending.

Go saints.

A year is pretty much normal for an ACL
But if you override Misson and Walsh, i'm happy to go with you.

Gresham is a forward.
Windhager will start on the ground. No question about it.
Right now I would consider Jones, Higgins, Billings, Butler as absolutely droppable.
Any money Lyon will see one of Owens, Hotton, Peris, Bytel, Byrnes or Philipou as something required.

Preseason is going to be really interesting. I honestly think that the drafts over the past two seasons have now just completely changed the outlook.
I dont think those names we traded in in the years previous have nearly as much weight on selection.

Round 6 2023 would be a year wouldn't it SaintsSeptember?

Also, not sure how my opinion on a player or suggested team overrides the Performance, Medical and Operations Manager (Misson) and Executive General Manager of Football (Walsh)?

As much as I want to see Phillipou in the team early, I think I’d prefer we take a more conservative JU-H approach given his age. Aim to get 5-8 games into him towards the middle of the year would be a good result.

Hottin I can actually see putting some serious heat on a small forward spot. Stocker, Byrnes, Bytel and Jones are going to have to do one mighty pre season to move the needle even a whisker let alone get near unseating Ross, Crouch & Steele for an inside mid position.

Can’t see Adams, Allison, Heath, Connelly, Campbell, Keeler, Van Es getting close although I do think Peris will get a debut at some point next season. Highmore also battling for a position due to unsteady/risky kicking.

Hill swaps half back with NWM and Clark to settle into a back flank releasing Sinclair is best for everyone. Both those lads are very brave, clever and surprisingly strong defensively.

Mason Wood will struggle for a wing spot as McKenzie is far superior. I have Hayes marginally ahead of Sharman only on contested pack marking ability and ruckwork, which I think we need help with.

I don’t like Cordy at all, worst rated 1v1 defender statistically in the league I think,
Break glass option at this stage.

Leaves me with the following assuming everyone is up and going.

Wilkie, Howard, Webster
NWM, Battle, Clark
Hill, Steele, McKenzie
Butler, Membrey, Windhager
Gresham, King, Hayes
Marshall, Sinclair, Crouch

Ross, Coffield, Higgins, Billings, Jones

Sharman, Owens, Paton, Wood, Peris, Hottin, Phillipou

Never thought an emergency list could get me so excited. Good times ahead I think gentlemen.

I really hope Peris makes it.
