List Mgmt. Best 23 for 2024

Vlas Young Brown
Banks Gibcus Short
Clarke McCauliffe McIntosh
Rioli Balta Taranto
Baker Lynch Cumberland

Martin Bolton nank

Interchange: Hopper Sonsie Prestia Kosi

Kosi can float forward, second ruck and even drop back if we need.

Our midfield lacks pace, hence McCauliffe and Bolton both in the middle. Our midfield is extremely experienced with all mids over 26. I think we can afford one kid. Might need to swap sonsie for Graham or something if too inexperienced but id rather give this McCauliffe guy a shot, we have no speed in the middle except for bolton.

Brown, Balta, Broad
Vlastuin, Gibcus, Short
Banks, Hopper, Pickett
Martin, Kozi, Cumberland
Rioli, Lynch, Rioli jr
Nankervis, Bolton, Taranto
Naismith, Baker, Prestia, Sonsie

Emg/ Young, Ross, Graham, Clarke

EDIT: Or we play Nankervis and Kozi to relief ruck, then Ross comes into the side as a midfielder.

Thought it might be handy to have a depth chart based on how players could be ranked when it comes to their spot in our best 23. From those that are considered locks to those that are developing to give a big more of a look at just where the list is in terms of it standing, are we a premiers challenger (top 6) or finals contender(mid 6) or rebuilding(bottom 6)?

IMO we're in between being a finals contender & rebuilding. If things click early enough we could be thereabouts for the finals especially with a good injury run. However we could quite easily become a rebuilding team if the team struggles to implement Yzes game plan and we have another tough year with injuries.

Using the above table here is how my best 23 looks.

B: Balta Young Vlastuin
HB: Baker Gibcus Short
C: D.Rioli Hopper Banks
HF: Martin Koschitzke Bolton
F: Cumberland Lynch Coulthard
R: Nankervis Taranto Ross
INT: Broad Dow Clarke Trezise Brown

A solid core of locks are the foundation of the side, with a mixture of AFL quality and fringe players filling out the rest of the side, which gives them an opportunity to establish themselves as part of our best side moving forward.

I like it, good blend of experience and youth that will still be competitive against any side. Probably swapping Ryan/Bauer/Sonz onto the bench throughout the year, horses for courses.

I think I like this side, but is it lacking some forward line speed? Coulthard and Clarke are the only ones I’d say could take that small forward role as Bolton should get more midfield

While Bolton will play more midfield he will need breaks and when that happens he rests forward and he becomes a dangerous option.

Loving how most these sides have Cumberland in the team

Im thinking Coulthard , Clarke & Campbell will be best 22 in 12-24 months and Cumberland will be traded or delisted
If Dimma was still coaching, Coulthard and Clarke definitely maybe. Campbell best 22? big call off zero games.

Cumberland can mark, and kick long. Is inaccurate but I'd have him or Bauer up there.

This is a good side. Not sure it will line up like this round 1, but it is where the side should roughly be maybe mid season. A good mix of new players.

Broad should start over Gibcus who should be eased in (maybe VFL for a couple of games), and I very much doubt Grimes will not be there round 1.

No way Hopper doesn't start, at the expense of Ross I would think. Ross could play wing/half forward/midfield.

Coulthard vs Clarke vs MRJ I think for the forward role, not sure 2 of 3 will play.

Disagree with most of your AFL quality list as most are either finished up or not good enough . I believe a lot of those fringe players are better than them. Nankervis and Hopper should not be locks. Kozi and Naismith were VFL players this year at best and are no guarantees to step up. Dow is not proven AFL quality and is well below a handful of the fringe players.
We need Sonsie, Clarke, MRJ NIWL Brown, Bauer, Trezise, Banks, Miller and RYAN to all displace those you have above them otherwise we've wasted another season playing rejects or finished up champs
McAuliffe looks ready made and may surprise a lot on here.

grimes shouldve retired this year

more cooked than chimp
Not going to make a final call yet on Grimesy!
He had a torrid time being Captain!
Playing in a defensive six that was never settled...
Crazy year with a crazy coach whose idea of player management was to rest Cumbers!
Reckon Dimma was more interested in his own issues rather than helping Grimesy confidently cope with the captaincy!
Playing under a part time coach that was more interested in securing the coaching jig fulltime...
Relieve Grimesy of the captaincy...leave him in the back half and see how he goes in the opening games under Yze...

Completely subjective and maybe a little inflammatory but here is my attempt.

notable omissions - and glad to be proven wrong
Nankervis - for mind too small and gives away too many for the positives he brings
MacIntosh - not enough output on wing - maybe a new role he will shine in? half back? half forward?
Graham - too slow for mine
Pickett - too many brain fades

The captain's are appointed based on merit, experience. I didnt see a coach's behaviour affecting him. I agree that 2022 he had to play small exclusively while we added Tarrant and Gibcus to the team. Chuck a D Rioli back there.
A lot of change, add in some injury in 21.

I loved Cumberland late 22, Castagna being dropped finally, MRJ and he had good ends to the year. Having said that his final wasn't great.

But as Martin returned and we bring in TT and JH.
Sadly when Cumberland got a game he didn't play well enough to retain his spot.
Ditto MRJ, Sonsie, Clarke
Cumberland is in that Fritsch mould, love to see him play in 24

Agee 100%. I don’t see what others see in Cumberland.

what did I write that was wrong ?
List better than Pies. So we should win the flag or end top 3-4 at worst?
Are you joking?
Our list is declining and will take 3 years to rebuild if all goes well.

our list is easily better than theirs. ffs we have big sexy and they have milkchek

we have bolton and they have bubby hill

we have dusty and they have pendles

we have tarranto and they have sidearse .

they have a tonne of spuds that were carried to a flag by the umpires . watch the qf and prelim. check out the rimjob umpiring theyve copped for the last 2 years

and read the second line

there is no way pies would even make the 8 if they were umpired like Richmond

we are easily top 4 with that kind of umpire treatment

Based on 2023 form, any team with Grimes and/or Graham and/or Ralphsmith and/or Pickett in it is for the ABSOLUTE tip.

You know it, I know it, and if you disagree your living off the sugar cane champaign of 2020.

Prestia, Hopper and Rioli Jnr not too far behind but will lose the rank and file supporters for the remainder of the year within 8 to 12 games if they are not careful.

You’re comparing the top of the lists. Our problem is the older declining players and youth that has not developed at the bottom.
