2002 Semi Final - Adelaide v Melbourne, MCG.

The Crows earned a home final, but were forced to play at the MCG against Melbourne because of the ridiculous MCC ruling. Crows were up by 7 goals at 1/4 time, Melbourne was up by 3 goals at 3/4 time, Crows ended up winning by 2 goals. Amazing.

As an Hawthorn supporter, best game I have seen was in 1989 Hawthorn v Geelong at Princes Park, Hawks were down at half time by 45 points with Gavin Excell and Ablett on fire, after half time Hawks moved Dermie to full forward, Ayres into the centre, and the Hawks eventually won by 15-20 points the final score was about 175 to 160. Unbelievable game.

Other unbelievable games I have seen were the 89 Grand Final, the last game at Waverley Park where the Hawks were on fire and smashed the Swans, and versus Carlton in 2001, where Dicko kicked the winning goal after the siren.

As a neutral supporter, best game I have seen was when Jeff Farmer kicked 9 goals in 2 quarters, the Essendon v Carlton preliminary final in 1999, and 2005 Grand final, low scoring contest but a great game.

Essendon V. Geelong 1993 (Ablett 14 Salmon 10)
I was there and it was a sensational game (Salmon went off with a hammy in the last quarter and Steve Alessio replaced him and kicked 3)

St Kilda v. Collingwood in the late 70s was a magic match ...George Young 9 goals and Phil Carman 11 (I think 6 in the last quarter). As an unbiased observer it was just sensational

no way i can go passed the round 3 match this year betwwen carlton and essendon when they were 48 points up and we ended up winning by 3 points with fev kicking 8

i was there and my 2 friends that were going 4 essendon were giving it to mee all game

also 99 perliminary was mad to

Port Adelaide vs Collingwood 1st Qualifying Final 2002

Returning to the finals for the first time since 1994 Collingwood edged home 16. 12. (108) to 14. 11. (95).

Collingwood vs Brisbane Rd. 8 2002
Knocked off the Lions by 3pts after trailing early in the final term. Memorable for Scott Burns hip and shoulder on Michael Voss in the first quarter. Voss, showing courage got back up and played a decent game.

Simply as an observer I would say, Essendon vs Kangaroos Rd. 16 2001, coming from 69pts down is just phenomenal.
Also Port Adelaide vs St. Kilda Preliminary Final 2004, I thought Robert Harvey was tremendous in this game. The Saints were so unlucky, but just not good enough.

Round 21 1995. Eagles (reigning premier) vs Carlton (eventual premier). Close all day, just goal for goal and a brutal physical running contest. Earl Spalding laid someone out, Dean Rice got the Blues in front in the dying seconds and Chris Mainwaring had a kick from beside the point post to win the game after the siren IIRC ... and missed. Blues by a point, kept the streak going and showed them they didn't need a loss as the experts were saying. Completed the 16 in a row to win the flag that year.

In terms of the talent on display and the high level of skill, that was a brilliant game. A real showcase as they say.

Think you'll find that was a different game from 1993 which was also a 1 point win to the Blues in WA (Mainwaring hit the post).

The 69 point match between Essendon and the Roos, or the match where Lloyd kicked 8 or so (including that freaking soccer kick) only to be topped by Carey who kicked 10, including the snap from the boundry at the punt round end.

That or the 1998 match r22 between the Roos and Dogs. 68500 or so for that match, between those 2 teams is increadible.

i also remember watching the 2002 grand final. voss was inspirational. another game id have to say that was unbelievable was the kangaroos vs the swans in 2005 where the kangaroos clawed back from a 40 point deficit and took the win in archers 250th.

1994 Prelim Final Kangaroos V Geelong.

A free flowing back and forth contest where for most of the second half it was geelong v carey. Innaccurate kicking by the roos kept geelong in it for the first quarter and a half before the cats drew clear. Some classic Carey moments in the third and last to bring us back only to have ablett kick his only goal of the day after the siren. Although we lost a brilliant match showcasing all the facets of AFL we love.
Of course milestone wins such as arch's 250th in sydney have merit

Round 21 2005. Dogs vs. Dees, finals hopes on the line, 4 goal comeback inside final 10 minutes, White kicks winning goal from 50 pretty tight to the boundary.
For a losing game; the 2002 SF Dees vs. Crows, that was one weird (yet good) game, 50 down, 20 up, 12 down, an Yze/Rigoni collision decimating our midfield in the last quarter, and the fact that it was even being played at the G.
Otherwise, any close win is always a great game IMO.

Four games stand out in my mind:

1) 1989 Grand Final Hawthorn v Geelong-Brereton poelaxed by Yeats, Ablett 9 goals, Dipper playing with a punctured lung, the courage of the Hawks to hold off a fast finishing Geelong. Hawthorn home-but only just.

2) Round 16 2001-Essendon v Kangaroos-Kangaroos 69 points up early in the 2nd quarter looking home and hosed, Essendon storm home to win by 2 goals. One of Kevin Sheedy's greatest victories in his time at Essendon.

3) 1984 Grand Final-Essendon v Hawthorn-Hawthorn 23 points up at 3/4 time, the Bomber scored 9.6 and win by 4 goals. The start of the Bomber dynasty.

4) 1977 Grand Final-North Melbourne v Collingwood-First Grand Final televised live into Melbourne, Collingwood 27 points up at the final change, 'Twiggy' Dunne's goal levelled the scores, unbearable tension-match tied.

As a Hawk fan...
´87 Prelim Final v Mel
´96 Round 22 v Mel (The Merger Match)
The merger game had an amazing passion and spirit that you could´t replicate.

Other teams...
´05 and ´06 Grand Finals
Really what more could you ask for?

The Jacket wave game

On the box - 89 Grand Final.

Live - merger match

went to both but was so young I didnt realise the significance of 89
96 merger game had everything, Dunstall 10 including his 100th, A young pair of David Neitz and Jeff Farmer carving it up, a hawks 1 point win to make the finals. Langford waving his jumper after the game etc etc.

Best non hawthorn- last years granny is hard to go past
Best home and away- 94 anzac day draw

1996 'merger match'. For reasons already posted, it had everything.
Nietz kicked a bag, Dunstall Kicked a bag, Hawthorn by a point....the crowd was huge, the atmosphere electric and the game was awesome.

best game i was at (that wasnt a final) was round 22 1998

Nth vs Bulldogs, 1st vs 2nd, only .3% seperating them and it ended up being 68,000 on a friday night

lead changed half a dozen times or more during the last quarter. Grant kicked 4, carey kicked 2 in a minute twice otherwise was quiet (for his standards).

FANTASTIC way to finish off a season

Just for the incredible skills on display, the 1992 SA vs Vic origin match does it for me. Get a copy of it and watch it, the feats performed were astonishing, capped off by Tony Hall's amazing goal from the boundary line.

As for my team, the two best Eagles games I have ever seen are both losses!

The second derby in 2003 - a more intense game of football I have never witnessed (finals aside). Daniel Kerr kicked the goal of the year and the two teams belted the bejesus out of each other. I think they were both hammered the week after as the derby took so much out of them.

Not sure what year, but Carlton beat the Eagles in a night game at Subi. Silvagni went crazy and just about knocked himself out taking a mark. Amazing game.

The 05 GF of course, but also the 06 GF although our result didn't go our way it was a thriller!

2005 V Geelong Semi-Final... we came back from the dead.
