Best midfield ever?

This reminds me of what would have happened if Bryan Cousins had played 33 more games for Geelong. Ben would have been F/S!
He was actually eligible under the rules at the time and was also eligible for Freo too

Ended up choosing Eagles obviously.

The one that separates the eagles from the power mids from the Lions and Cats is the start ruckman in Cox. You could definitely be splitting hairs between the mids of all three teams but Cox is the clear dominant ruckman across Eagles, Cats and Lions. Obviously Gawn would be the most comparable opponent, but the demons’ midfield pales in comparison to the eagles, Lions and Cats.
tbf Oliver & Petracca are only probably about to hit their peak so that could change in 5 years time

Most of the best I remember have been named, although I do think people should include the defensive midfielders as well - they often get forgotten here.

What made Brisbane 01-04 so special wasn't just having Voss/Black/Akermanis/Lappin, but that they had Hart/Scott/Ashcroft who could play those defensive roles and free up the big guns to do their thing.

The other that I think should be acknowledged is Collingwood 2010. They were the first to really heavily rotate midfielders, and were rotating Pendlebury, Thomas, Beams, Sidebottom, Ball, Swan and Didak, plus Wellingham and Johnson in the more defensive roles. That team was able to beat out some great midfields - Geelong in the PF, then St Kilda (Hayes, Dal Santo, Montagna, Goddard) in the GF and mostly did so by weight of numbers. Carlton at that time were also pretty good (peak Judd/Murphy/Gibbs/Carazzo) and I remember for two years simply not being able to compete against their heavy rotations and sheer number of options.

You're kind to put them in: we were very deep and versatile, but I don't think we lived in the same space as the others for quality.

It was a Malthouse Special midfield, stack 'em up and roll them through. He was a very innovative coach for all his grumpy defensiveness.

On the broadcast on Sunday they mentioned he had more rule changes forced through than any current coach: they changed the 30 seconds to 7 because we used to hold it up to beat the Sydney flood, they stopped him from playing 2 rucks at ball-ups, and they capped the interchange. I think there was another one or two in there.

Good point about the defensive side, I think the 07-09 Cats had Ling and others to roll through defensively. Currently Melbourne are a defensive midfielder off the pace of the rest.

I feel like any midfield that didn't have to make use of the class of Burgoyne/Hodge for >70% of the game and could inject them when needed was pretty good. We batted very deep and had some absolute stars on the wing. Brutally efficient.

That being said for mine in the modern era it's Brisbane > Eagles of the 2000s > Eagles of the 90s as my top 3. Geelong, Hawthorn and Melbourne in the rung below.

Carlton had a pretty good midfield in the mid 90's

Justin Madden - AA ruckman
Greg Williams - AA, MVP, Brownlow medalist
Craig Bradley - AA, Hall of fame
Brett Ratten - 2x AA, 3x B&F
Fraser Brown - decent backup to Williams
Anthony Koutoufides - AA wingman
Scott Camporeale - AA wingman
Mil Hanna - AA half back/wing

SOS at one end, Sticks at the other, but it was all about the midfield.

I think you guys had more than enough father sons as it was, leave some for the rest of us
That is true haha. In saying that. In 10-15 years you guys may just have the most stacked F/S squad the game has ever seen! Everytime I watch a WCE YouTube video there's about 30 kids running around

Rob Wiley tragically underrated because he shared his career btn VFL/WAFL (by choice).
And that shouldn't be the case because he was a gun in WA and in Victoria, just like Kernahan was a gun in SA and Victoria, just like many others that came from interstate and took to the VFL like ducks to water.

They traded one who then won a premiership.

Yep, Cox tips it in the Eagles favour for me.
Brisbane probably had the better support depth to the big four.

Some people mention Geelong for some reason.

Peak Judd, Cousins and Cox are better than anybody from their midfield.

Ottens v Cox would be a bloodbath.

For the Lions, 3 Brownlow medalists is enough said really. All better big game players than any Geelong mid too.

The Eagles trio of Judd, Cousins, Kerr, but not because of personal bias, but because that mid 00s side didn't have much firepower up front but still dominated, and you could see how good our midfield was. I've never seen a midfield dominate/carry a side as much before or since the 05-06 Eagles.
Judd, Cousins and Kerr were lucky to have big Cox!

Seriously, Cox was the best ruckman of any of the midfields mentioned. Ottens was vital to the Cats premierships, but Cox was easily No. 1 ruckman in that era
