I just moved into Essendon and there's seemingly nothing around. Feelsbatman
Renovate somewhere like the Union and you will absolutely ****ing print money.

All there is are wine bars. Which are okay but you get sick of it quick, and as a young man you want a nice beer garden or somewhere you can duck in for a decent countery. The Penny Young isn't bad actually but it's still a bar behind a Woolworths car park at the end of it. And this is all Moonee Ponds too which isn't far but yeah.

The area has heaps of kids still at home who have to go to Brunswick, so many single women in their 40s, young professional couples.

I can't believe someone hasn't stepped in. Done up a nice old facade, had your $10 Furphys and Coopers and a few good crafties, have a simple but well done menu, don't have stainless steel everywhere but paint the ****ing joint and clean it up. Have two or three but only have them on when people actually want them. Don't play shit Gold FM music. Beer garden, nice and open and breezy feeling in summer and cosy in winter. So many people who operate pubs are idiots and have no taste, but the good ones still get punters. If you chuck that in an area completely ****ing devoid of pubs – with a thirsty, good populace – you'll do well. Flemington, Ascot Vale, Maribyrnong, Moonee Ponds, Essendon, Aberfeldie... that's a ****in catchment.

The Moonee Ponds shopping complex is a 20-25 minute walk so I might go check out Penny Young.

Anglers on the Maribyrnong river is a good joint mate.
Isn't Anglers sort of like the Raffles or even the Left Bank in East Freo? AKA you go there with your parents and nanna for a cheap steak on Wednesday or its full of everyone you went to school with for a big 10-dollar-jug night on Monday evenings. It's not a great venue, bit old aye?

No secret Essendon and Moonee Ponds haven't got much. Both suburbs are full of people who'd be rich in a country town but in Melbourne they're doing fine.

The epitome of entitled middle class Gen Xers who negative geared themselves to holiday houses in Dromana and Rosebud

It can be that, but can also be a nice beer garden with a decent crowd some nights.

All the men over 30 are squishy, pot bellied looking little betas and the women are all that sort of crazy who'd spit on a waiter but say how left voting they are.

Plenty of them would be straight up be Liberal voters. They don't all want to pay eastern suburbs prices (20 years ago) and there's a VAFA club.
Yeah I get that vibe, heaps of crusties who still have religious affiliations too. It strikes me as odd.

In fact lots of people around the area are plain old odd.

Other night, me, my girlfriend, and her friend are walking to one of the stations to go see Taylor Swift. We walk past some apartments and RCD and daughters come out, tickets clearly in their hands, and I go 'are you guys going to Taylor Swift too?' and the look I got was akin to asking them how their kids were or something. No response, just this disgusted look. So ****ing weird.

I know not everyone does it but living back in WA, I'm used to walking around the burbs and people saying hi as they walk their dogs or whatever. A few times I've said 'g'day' just unintentionally and again, it's like you've asked if you could bum them... weird campaigners.

Yeah ABC sucks. I never spent a proper night there anyway. Was a venue my mates and I used to meet up at for pre drinks because it was central and cheap as 18 year olds.

I last went for quick Saturday afternoon drinks before a party last year and I think it’s alright for that. They’ve got cheap spirit specials and their food is half decent. That’s about it.

Once it gets to 6:30-7pm on a Saturday it’s horrid. Nowhere to sit inside unless you manage to get there real early. Place smells like a weird mix of cocktails and incense. And if you sit outside you’ll get stuck having to wait in a line to get back out there when you need drinks. Shithouse.

Valley Cellar Door and Strangeloves are decent bars in Moonee Ponds - Penny Young gets way too crowded, and is outrageously expensive at times - I remember one of their 'weird' beers was going for $29 a pint.

**** that.

You'll never get prices like that at Valley or Strangeloves.

Once it gets a bit warmer there’s a few nice spots

such as? all beaches are good and with crowds there is still a thing of isolation and everyone just people watches each other and that sucks

I know st Kilda has things like beach volleyball ect but there's still an isolation thing for the masses
