Jim Prentice wore #17. That would have been about 1972-73 when he played that stint up there?

Albert Franks, the first fellow to wear number 9 for you fellas, was one of your early stars (1909 premiership player I think), and one of the toughest hombres of the era. Had a fair temper on him apparently.

haha:D thanks D

i would have been underage in the under 12's then... must have been later and i think Jimmy moved ??? North? maybe dunno

I luv'd the bloke could kick easily 50m off both feet (with ultimate precision) and a quality "inside" they would call him now centreman but tall enough in country football to play KPP!

I always prefered watching him than having obviously at the end of his career to play against... one of the toughest 'hombres' as you put it ever I have seen

fwiw: it did not help that game (I refered to) whether BS or not they opposition put out the "word" he was just released from jail!

I would plump for the Wilkinson Twins, it will be tough getting a cheek on the bench, if the Haenen twins also get a guernsey though.

have not seen alot of them play,
but is it just me or has malceski lost alot of confidence :(
i kind of wish he didn't have the surgery because he wasn't that influential as he was last year (2007)
i know the surgery has nothing to do with the confidence level but still i wouldn't trust myself if i had an artifical ligament.

Some Trivia /story: Doug Priest

Priest played well into his 40's in country football. Dunno what position he played for Swans I was too young to see or remember him. He was one hell of an old rough nut played either CHB or Ruck in country football

My first year elevated from the under 16's in a preseason trial match for the firsts we played his team. They were cross town rivals but they played in a different league at the time . Priest was no longer their captain coach, but still playing as big rough nut protector!!!

I called one of our best older players centreman through to take the loose ball and yelled I would shepherd. I will never forget to grin on Doug Priests face as he put up an elbow and was gunna wipe out the cheeky little kid (me) out .

I ran as fast as I could and jumped into him high bump Buchanan style. How I missed the elbow I still don't know, he was flat on his back and I landed on him!.. his swearing was unreal.

Teammates came from everywhere to slap me on the back... the bloke I shepherded for became my first boss. He confessed over a few beers many years later even he (a league B&F and ex SANFL champ) was scared of the old tough nut Priest.

He thought I was committing suicide! It was just pure naivity and beginners luck! I did nothing else in the the game but the shepherd earned me one more seniors game then was dropped back to the seconds for the whole year

:)

Great story. I saw Doug play for South many times in the 60s. He was tough, reliable and consistent. Not dissimilar to Ben Matthews, but his decision-making skills were better.

Thanks mate. :thumbsu:

It is very hard for the younger ones to contribute to these threads unless it is info out of the interwebs. So the ones I do recognise I try to add value .... it was a true story.

There will be other numbers coming up that I have a story or two to tell as well ;) ... they are mainly ..... in the 30's range of numbers! ...# 35 will be a ripper!:D

So keep it up Bedford, it was a great idea :thumbsu:

Jim and James Wilkinson are one and the same - Jim being short for James - Tasmanian who shares the same birthday as me. And someone I know well.

David ackerly by far, the mans still a machine, he was my p.e teacher for a number of years and he is still probably fitter than a couple players at the club.
