Bevo out

Sorry BRWB but you are trying to put those words in Mutt’s mouth. The quote you have selected in no way suggests that Mutt wanted to sack the coach. It suggests the exact same feeling that many of us have.

We love certain aspects of Bevo but ******* hate many of the others that have allowed us to significantly under perform over the last couple years. Because he is such a good man manager and was able to turn water into wine back in 2016 it has given him enormous credits in the bank to waste away, which he has. He has been beyond infuriating with his stubbornness around list management, selection and the versatility mantra.

The victory on the weekend does not change any of that. Our defense and midfield depth are so good that we would beat most teams in the league without a ruckman and proper forward set up. That doesn’t mean that it’s the easiest or best way to do it. I am no expert but there are 17 other clubs that play a real ruckmen (or two) every week. The only other club that doesn’t, is one of the worst underperformers in AFL history (Geelong).

There would have been heaps of Richmond people saying Damien Hardwick was a absolute polished turd of a coach up until 2016. Because he was. Just because he actually listened to the necessary feedback and changed his ways from 2017 onwards doesn’t mean that those people were wrong. He brought in lots of other senior voices at that time and gave up some control.

We are yet to see if Bevo and more importantly the club can make those necessary changes to ensure we don’t waste this list. We need to bring in not one but numerous senior assistants to provide new ideas and a more balanced selection and list management approach. We need to bring in a minimum of two more rucks that the team is committed to playing and that are kept fit enough to play throughout the season. If one of those is going to be Young, fine, but he needs to be trained as a ruckman and played there all year.

If you want to attack people forwanting to sack the coach, find people who actually want to sack the coach. But don’t go after the huge group of us, who have every right to criticize the coach very strongly, while not suggesting that we throw the baby out with the bath water.

Well I don't see how anyone can read the comments Mutt made and draw the conclusion he wants Bev to be coach. But when I first quoted his post here I specifically said he did not say outright that he wanted the coach sacked. So its rubbish to suggest I'm putting words in anyone's mouth

Do I have a problem with people criticising the coach? Nope. Thats why the forum is here. And I freely admit that I've been critical of the coach.

Do I like seeing our coach personally insulted by a Mod on the WB board? Nah. And if you or anyone else think it's fine to personally insult the coach in the way Mutt has done without any criticism coming back the other way then tough shit.

if someone genuinely thinks so little of our coach that they feel the need to personally insult him and call him names like 'w***er' and 'smart arse' anonymously in a public forum, I really don't get why they'd still want him as a coach. Don't get it at all.

I'm pretty much over your sanctimonious pursuit of what you think I said or meant or thought or implied. I'm sure that many others on here are also over it. I'd suggest we stop this right now.
Please stop distracting Bevo from the task at hand. Ta.

Like most Dogs fans I’ve felt the pain following the doggies teams from the 70’s to 2014.

Bevo has taken our club from a basket case irrelevant rabble in pre season 2015 to a premiership and finals contenders, building the talent we have now that I think we’ll feel enjoyment and excitement for the next 10 years.

The latest bulldogs promo video on last weeks win shows what a huge motivational coach he is regardless of where we finish this season I would never want Bevo out.

Not that I broadly disagree with some of the assessment of Beveridge, I very much think people are not putting any thought in how we would actually get a new coach and how good they would be and the fallout of the club as a result.

i can’t remember ever going or watching a Bevo coached bulldogs team and not thinking we had some chance to win (even in 2018). I think it takes a pretty special coach to do that…

Saying that his selections have left a lot to be desired at times.

There are exceptions of course but something Bevo is really good at is bringing out good football from players you didn't know had it in them. Our list is full of mid and low draft picks yet Bevo turns them into excellent footballers. The 2016 team is largely the same list that in finished 14th in 2014. In terms of draft rating, that team was full of low picks and rookies. Both young players and older players alike, everyone just got better. Picken is the best example. For years, he was a battler getting a game through sheer tenacity. Under Bevo, he became a match winner. So you can't really say that Bevo is wasting the list because how do you know whether the same players would be as good under a different coach? Would Dale, Daniel, Williams, Hannan, Scott, Gardner, Garcia, R Smith be any good if they landed elsewhere? My observation with Bevo is he looks a lot more intense now than previously which could translate to him micro-managing and needing to control more. This might be Covid related pressure and/or the reduction in the soft cap. Hopefully he can relax a bit and get back to how he was in the earlier years.

Perhaps you could consider changing the thread title to "Bevo Down But Not Out"? It does sound as if you are advocating for him to be OUT.
I think the title thread causes most of the angst. The other similar title thread encourages more discussion, this title thread is downright disrespectful to a coach who has had us in 5 finals seriers in 7, a premiership and who knows this year after the McCartney years.

My position is whether we win or lose this week, every year a review should be conducted of the coaching set up and every 5 years get someone from outside the club to run the review. You should always be looking to improve
I suggested that too. Perhaps Mutt in a gesture of good faith or conciliation might consider it. :)

I am not the thread starter and the thread title itself complies with the posting guidelines, so I will defer to the wishes of the OP. josh the gent .

As i said above, my views haven’t changed on Bevo.

I loved what he accomplished in 2016, that September will forever be etched in my memory!

However, i don’t believe he is the right coach for us now.

Primarily this is because he disregards the importance of ruckwork, which can be seen both in our list composition (after 7 years of him at the helm), and in our match selections.

He was able to mitigate this in 2016 due to the third man up - as soon as the rules changed it caused a problem for Bevo that he’s been unable to solve for.

Have no issue that this is your opinion, but do you want discussion and debate or only people who agree. As noted by another poster a simple question mark in the heading encourages more civil debate and is not insulting as it is a question and not a statement as it is now.

We already have a thread for civil debate about Bevo's future. It even has a question mark in the thread title!

I just assumed this one's for fisticuffs, so I've been staying out of it. :)

I don't often comment, but I have been around BF for quite some time and right at this moment it is my opinion that thanks to a number of recent posts, this is one of the crappest threads I have seen. There is a time for a conversation like this, but it certainly is not while we are a live chance in a semi-final, following our most successful home and away season for many years, coached by our most successful coach ever. Like some other posters, this thread has made me seriously consider the value I get out of Big Footy in comparison to the annoyance and frustration threads like this provide me.

This thread makes me want to change my profile name to Embarrassed39

I’m on a high from the win, and i can acknowledge Bevo’s performance tonight to self-correct - especially moving from Wood to Duryea to guard Cameron.

Nonetheless - had we played a proper ruck during the season I wonder if this prelim wouldn’t be played away from home?

Wasn’t Adelaide our first choice to play against Essendon?

Ha, i doubt we’d choose to play in Adelaide this week!

Perhaps it wouldn’t have been our choice, but seems like teams are playing wherever the AFL tells them to. At the end of the day, a footy ground is a footy ground. Being a mid-tier club for membership, chances are we’ll be outnumbered in the crowd.

Anyone, anywhere. Cede nullis!
