Can someone forward me on a copy of the match committee video some of you clearly have? I'm expecting to see Luke (despite reportedly having an EQ that is off the charts) violently banging his fists on the table as he berates all of his assistants whilst they cower in fear.

None of us have a clue what happens behind closed doors and its ridiculous to speculate.

How about we concentrate on the facts;

Our 5th placed H&A finish will be our highest in a decade.

This will be the 2nd time in our HISTORY that we have played 5 finals series in a 7 year span.

Bevo is 3 wins away from the most wins as a coach in our HISTORY.

He has the highest win % for anyone who has coached 20+ games in our HISTORY.

He is already tied for most finals wins in our HISTORY.

We just finished the season with the 2nd ranked attack, 4th ranked defence and 2nd best percentage. All this despite missing our 1st choice ruckman for 2/3 of the year, Our 2nd choice KPD for 2/3 year, Our most experienced defender for 1/2 year and Two A grade mids for 1/2 year.

I'm choosing to stay optimistic.

We've got the Dons who we've won 6 of our last 7 against and who we should have beat last time. We knock them over and we play the loser of Lions and Dees.

We've won 6 of our last 8 against the Lions and 3 of our last 4 against the Dees. Beat one of them and we get another crack at the Cats or Power who both took 120 minutes to sneak in front of us.

We're in this up to our eyeballs I'm tellin' ya.

Go Dogs!

I have been a sad miserable prick all weekend but you’ve lifted me up. Thank you!

I’m more worried about his awful match day tactics and stuffing up our ruck situation. This was also said in 2019 and 2020.

Its not a problem

According to many in here match day coaching is irrelevant and does little to change a result.

He’ll be coaching us for the next couple of years at least, and I’d expect longer. Maybe he didn’t value the ruck position much, maybe he still doesn’t, but it does feel like the frustration with it being a massive loss for us has hit home.

It won’t be a 35 year old ruck we bring in next year, not when that’s been proven to be too risky and when English just cannot be considered as a viable option as first ruck. I personally will be surprised if we don’t land at least a competent ruck (and probably also a KPD) in the trade period - you’ve got to go all in when you have a great hand.

The very act of drafting English with a top 20 pick proves that Beveridge value rucks, because virtually on rucks get drafted that early in modern footy, yet we were hopeful that English when drafting him could turn into that ruck.

Pick value of first ruck taken in the draft (not counting players who were converted to ruck at AFL level, or were drafted with the ope

2012: Grundy - Pick 18
2013: Nankervis - 35
2014: Pittonet - 50
2015: Flynn - 41
2016: English - 19
2017: T. De Koning- 30
2018: Fort - 65
2019: Jackson - 3

Essentially, across a 6 year window between Grundy and Jackson, English was the earliest out-and-out ruck in the league who was drafted as playing junior footy in the ruck, and was expected to play the vast majority of their football in the ruck at the time they were drafted.

You don't do that unless you value the ruck position.
It's kind of a misleading statement. Timbo was best available at that pick, we needed a ruckman and he was the best available player. From my memory that draft was pretty thin with ruck prospects. He was considered a steal at #19 when we got him.
Bevo hates wasting picks on ruck prospects.

Wasn't English a tall mid for most of his junior career before a late growth spurt? So he was a late comer to rucking, and then mainly because of his height. It is still evident now, English is a midfielder who happens to be over 200cm tall. He has never looked like a natural ruckman, but his ball handling skill suggest he is better in this department than most genuine ruckmen.

I'm still of the view that English never has been, nor never will be, a genuine ruckman. Maybe that is why Bevo was happy to draft him so early - he is not actually a ruckman, just a very tall mid. Even as he matures, I can't see him being anything more than a second ruckman, with his primary role being a tall forward. Funnily enough, the best football he has played has been in exactly that role earlier this year, when Martin was available.

I don't think any team likes taking ruck prospects early in the draft. There's too much risk and development involved that it's better off using late speculative picks or looking to pry second string rucks out of other clubs. Rucks are probably one of the easier spots to fill because they are always solid players roaming around. We just haven't managed to do so. I mean, we've done it the 'right' way by taken a great ruck prospect early and spending years developing him. Despite Tim being a good AFL player, it's clear he doesn't have what it takes to be a dominant ruckman. Look at how the other finalists have acquired their rucks.

Melbourne - Gawn (34th overall)
Port - Lycett (Second string ruck from the Eagles)
Brisbane - McInerney (picked out of the state leagues as a 22 year old)
Geelong - Stanley (Second/third string ruck from the Saints)
Sydney - Hickey (Second/third string ruck from the Eagles)
GWS - Mumford (Acquired from Sydney)
Essendon - Draper (Rookie draft)

As per my previous post, I believe Bevo was happy to draft English because he was essentially a tall mid, not a genuine ruck. He was only moved into the ruck as an older junior due to a growth spurt. Playing him in the ruck is playing him out of his natural position. Yet Bevo plays him there, and as fans we all get frustrated at his inability to be competitive in the ruck. I doubt he will ever be competitive in the ruck.

This sentence in the email from the membership team that just came through seems like an odd one to me.

“While it has not ended in the way we had hoped, our fifth-place finish remains our best home and away result under coach Luke Beveridge.”

I’m not sure this reads in the positive light they think it does.

I hope they are seething internally.

Maybe that says more about under achievement of previous coaches. Love your humour.

Agree
More like a Paul Salmon type

Salmon became an excellent ruckman as he aged.

Hawthorn (1995-2000)Edit
At the end of 1995, Salmon moved to Hawthorn, where he played from 1995–2000, and revived his career winning the Best and Fairest in 96 and 97 as well as the Most Consistent Award in 98.[14] He became Vice Captain in 98 and also finished in the top ten in every best and fairest in each of his five years at the club. After 5 season's and 100 games with the Hawks he retired at the age of 35, and after his retirement he was named in Hawthorn's 'Team of the Century'.[15]

In 1997, Salmon achieved All-Australian selection, being named in the Ruck.[16]

Melbourne's back up ruckman was pick 3 though, Nicnat was 2. You've kind of justified the point I was trying to make. Get games into Sweet, he will have bad games but persevere and let him grow and improve. He will be no worse than Tim, Lewy and Bont in the ruck. He's physical so there will always be a contest.
Stef Martin wasn't a good ruckman at Melbourne but look what he became. Look at Hickey, McInerney, Draper and TDKs development as examples.

Thought exactly the same thing. Don’t piss on me and tell me it’s raining, we were top three weeks ago ffs.

Spin, I say.

Team of the century from 5 seasons played is pretty schizenhousen from Hawthorn.

I understand why they've done it but I find it really cringey that the Bulldogs released a finals hype video. In all likelihood we are about to endure the most embarrassing loss in recent history to top off what has been a horrendous end to the season. They shouldn't be trying to build up hope in their fans just for them to be crushed again. Also, #yieldtonoone is a ****ing cringey slogan. Maybe change it to #cantwaitformadmonday or #onemoretogo

Getadogupya, ya miserable sod.

English is nothing like Salmon. He came in as a kid and dominated the comp as a forward who could take contested marks, and was still handy at ground level. Would have played ruck earlier if not for one of the all time greats in Madden being there. Timid is not a word you would ever associate with Salmon.

Yield to none is literally the club’s motto. And awesome one at that.

Okayyy....?? My post had nothing to do with Tim English, did you quote the wrong post?

Apologies quoted the wrong post, it was meant in relation to the Salmon comparisons.

FWIW Im not a hawk fan but you would be pretty confused that a 5 year player like Salmon made the team of their century.

Most of us pre-2016 said, ‘I just want to see us win one!’ I know I did. We all got to see one with Bevo at the wheel. Now it’s not greedy to want to see a second given we know what it feels like but some of the rubbish being posted in all threads is mind blowing! It’s ok to be critical but you still need to support your team. I’m hoping like hell we flick the switch on Sunday and then continue on but whatever happens I will still love the club and will be optimistic that next year will be our year - as I have been every year since the mid-70’s. I think some people who supposedly support the team would rather see us lose just to say I told you so. Go figure.

Salmon used to be known as the only 200cm + player who was a decent key forward, but with the King brothers on the rise we can put that to bed. Key position players are getting bigger every year it seems.
