For all our mooted 'goodwill' that we are racking up for being so great to trade with it is appearing very one sided. Impey deal should have been done day 1 given his circumstances. Port starting to stall for no real reason.
Impey just needs to walk up to David Koch and say "Im not committed to winning a flag with Port" and BAM... the trade is done.

It's a little frustrating, isn't it?

We invariably trade fair and do the right thing by our own players, yet there isn't much goodwill coming back our way.

I don't think we do deals like letting Hill break his contract and return home so that others will trade fairly with us. We do it to create a culture where players wishes are valued in the hope it will make it easier to attract good people to the club.

You make a good point here, and I think there is a lot of truth in it. But its possible that in operating that way we mark ourselves out as the nice guys of trade week and potentially give ourselves a handicap in every deal we do (i.e., "here come the Hawks, we can extract more from those folks than others"). Its probably still worth it to create the environment that we want.

Afl player ratings have Impey as the 32nd best small/medium forward (ahead of all of the premiers players in that position) , Ports 15th best player and would be our 10th best player at the start of next year.

I think it hurts us more when it is our player going out than when it is a player we are trading in. We probably have a reputation now of not playing hardball with outgoing contracted players (Hill, Mitchell, Lewis) so will probably get less in those situations, but that softness with our own people leaving doesn't effect how hard we can play with incoming players where it is picks and not outgoing players we are using as trade material. But yes, hopefully overall , keeping a 'great club to work at where they value the player's wishes' is worth it overall. That two way respect street certainly seems to be something Clarko and the club have worked hard at, and the last year or two, we've shown it is not just words by backing it up with actions.

Oh crap - now the Port fans will want our next year's first for him.

If the deal doesn't get done then let's move on.. So many clubs this year seem keen to have discussions about players, Port either do the deal or we go, Impey ain't that good to be haggling over.

I would think Tom Mitchell for pick 14 is waited in our favour.

However, it does help when the 2 clubs dealing are sophisticated and professional.

Swings and roundabouts.
Maybe the Swans remembered the Kennedy and McGlynn for draft picks 39, 46 and 70 trade. Perhaps there is honour amongst gentleman traders.

I don't think Impey improves us necessarily.
He us some flash and pace but plenty of players have had that and amounted to not much.
If he is perceived to be better than the draft pick we give up for him, do the deal.

No one has answered the question on Poppy leaving.
Is that fact or just typical BF "insider knowledge".....:D

It's not even 'inside knowledge'.. it's simply speculation atm.

Ppl read what they want to read on Big Footy; it only takes one person to misinterpret a comment and nek minnit Delta Goodrem is lining up at FF.

Just read this on The Age Live Trade Blog. Nothing to surprising, but just an FYI. (apologies if posted elsewhere)

Jarman Impey told Hawthorn that they were his preferred destination and his manager Tom Petroro was confident that they and Port Adelaide would be able to get a deal done.

Petroro told Trade Radio that Hawthorn approached Impey, and they had a need for Impey's speed and power.

He said Impey and coach Alastair Clarkson "hit it off", and in the wake of the loss of Impey's father, Impey felt very comfortable.

Petroro also said Port Adelaide and Ken Hinkley had been great, but Impey wanted to move closer to his sister.

there were rumours and even reports in the paper earlier in the year that GWS were keen on Poppy (GWS were desperate for a pressure forward and poppy and 2 richmond players were their targets) and we asked about Kelly, Kennedy and Hopper if you recall, but lately it seems GWS have gone cold on the nearly 30 Poppy trade as some of their older recruits have bombed of late, i believe thats the situation as it stands, but who knows what will happen in the silly season...

I don't think it's fact that he is leaving. His name has been mentioned a lot on our board, due to his age and the apparent need for a quality small forward at some clubs like GWS.

I haven't heard his name mentioned since the trade period started officially, other than an inquiry from Sydney. GWS seem to be into Honeychurch at the moment, so unless someone offers us overs and Poppy agrees, then I can see him staying. I still think he is a very important player to our team and committed to the club, so I see no need to march him out the door unless it's overwhelmingly in our favour. Last game of the season was a nice little reminder of the his importance. I'm still hoping to see he and Cyril terrorising defenders inside our 50m come rd 1.

There was a lot of talk abut Poppy leaving to GWS and then Swans prior to trade week but theres been nothing on him at all for a while.

Pop is apparently not overly keen on leaving.

That’s the problem with runninng a club so well, no one wants out.

But our culture is apparently in the toilet?? And players will run for the exists because of the Gaudry situation. Are you telling me the media doesn't know shit?

Which leaves my 2nd theory as to why we are after Impey which is we are looking at going with a Tigers style small forward line.
