The indefatigable captain had another great year, defying his ageing body to again lead from the front (at the back). Last year’s All-Australian captain shifted to a floating third-tall role in 2013, letting MacKenzie and Brown take the opposition’s best talls. Glass picked up best on ground honours in the win over Brisbane, and also polled well in the loss to Sydney, the last-second win over North, and the final three disastrous weeks.

Simpson’s first order of business: “Masten, shave those sideburns!”

Games: 19
Goals: 9
Votes: 973
Weighted average: 31.25
Best match: Rd 3 vs Melbourne – 4.88
BOG performances – Rd 2 vs Hawthorn, Rd 3 vs Melbourne

The hard-running midfielder continued to build on his good form of the past few years, adding a top-three finish to last year’s fourth place. Masten hit the ground running after training a streetful of houses down over the pre-season, picking up 30-plus possessions and top votes in early games against Hawthorn and Melbourne. Despite some injury problems late in the year (particularly a serious-looking ankle injury that only cost him a game and a half), he had a few other good polling games including three in a row against Adelaide, Freo and Sydney.

2nd. Eric MacKenzie

Votes: 1087
Weighted average: 37.80
Best match: Rd 11 vs St Kilda – 4.95
BOG performances – Rd 10 vs Richmond, Rd 11 vs St Kilda, Rd 15 vs Adelaide, Rd 23 vs Adelaide

The heir apparent to Glass in the backline really came of age in 2013, developing into an elite-level stopper and putting in some fantastic performances on some of the competition’s biggest names. The best of those was clearly the game against St Kilda heading into the bye, when E-Mac not only blanketed but actually outscored Saints captain Nick Riewoldt and kicked the winning goal in the process. That effort got him the highest single-game score of any player this season, and he was best-afield on three other occasions including both clashes with the Crows. MacKenzie’s fantastic year was recognised when he was named in the extended 40-man All-Australia squad, although he missed the final cut, and he will be right in contention when the Club Champion award is announced later this year.

JK celebrates his victory

Games: 21
Goals: 60
Votes: 1229
Weighted average: 39.39
Best match: Rd 1 vs Fremantle – 4.69
BOG performances – Rd 1 vs Fremantle, Rd 17 vs Sydney

Kennedy bounced back from an injury-hit 2012 to regain his position as the spearhead of the Eagles’ attack. The twinkle-toed key forward burst out of the blocks, being judged West Coast’s best in the opening round derby and kicking 12 goals in the first three matches. He kicked 5 goals on four occasions during the season and led the Coleman until a disastrous final month where he barely troubled the scorers. Even when he wasn’t kicking sausage rolls, Kennedy impressed with his work-rate, particularly his willingness to chase and tackle which is unparalleled for a bloke of his size. Although he only won best-afield honours twice, Kennedy was in the top three or four in the voting in about every second game. Those efforts all added up, and for his consistency over the season Kennedy is a very worthy winner of the Bigfooty West Coast Eagles Player of the Year for 2013.

Either of E.Mac or JK were always going to win it, with these two (and Masto) certainly providing the major highlights of an otherwise forgettable year.
