Biggest choke by a team

Don't know if this exactly qualifies, but in Round 1, 1990, Geelong led Hawthorn by a point 10 minutes into the third quarter. From that point on, Hawthorn kicked 19.13 to 1.5 to win by 115 points.

Pick one of half a dozen Freo games ...

The worst one is probably Round 1 2001. Freo was about 36 points up late in the 3rd quarter, they dropped the game and the were mentally shot for the season. Didn't win until R17 that year, and only one 2 in total. I reckon you can track it back to the first game against Carlton.

Or when Freo had the lead at 3/4 time for about 5 weeks running and managed to lose it each time, setting some sort of AFL record.

Or down the road at WCE, 14 points down against the Doggies with 2 minutes to go around 2005. Ashley Sampi's mum thought the game was over, and left the stadium. Sampi kicked a goal after the siren ...

I think they led by that with perhaps 10min to play in wet conditions. I remember some very choke like errors by Geelong players during the late stages of the game.

One I can remember was at the Sydney end where it was Stevie J who suddenly went all fumbly.

Weren't you guys on the right end of a choke?

Like 30 odd points down vs West Coast in the Dale Kickett-Phillip Read-Michael Gardiner game and then win 107-100?

And a good choke that was ... think it was about 36 points, and it was a 1 point win. Clive kicking 7 goals, there was a photo of me and my mates on the front page of the West Oz the following day going nuts at the siren. I didn't want to rub it in, Sampi's mum having no confidence in the team and leaving before her son iced the game is more comical

Talk about confidence boosting parenting and faith..

Geelong v Hawthorn R6 1989.

Geelong kicked first goal after half time to be 55 points up and lost by 8 points.

*Game also must be noted for Gavin Excel kicking 9 goals, part of his career purple patch where he kicked 36 goals in 6 weeks, in what was otherwise an unremarkable career.

One could say he temporarily excelled

The 3 biggest chokes by a team in season: North Melbourne 2013

Choke 1: North Melbourne leads Geelong Cats by 41pts in 2nd quarter. Jimmy Bartel goals with 25 seconds remaining, North Melbourne lose by 4pts.

Choke 2: North Melbourne leads West Coast Eagles by 15 pts in 4th quarter. Nic Naitanui goals after siren, North Melbourne lose by 2pts.

Choke 3: North Melbourne leads Adelaide Crows by 39pts in 2nd quarter, and then 30pts in 4th quarter with 9 minutes remaining. Jared Patrenko goals with 16 seconds remaining, North Melbourne lose by 1pt.

None of this changes the fact that you led by 4 goals with a quarter to go and lost two weeks in a row, especially in the SF which history has shown is very difficult for the home side to lose.
Without Cousins, Kerr and Judd...
