Adelaide over the Western Bulldogs in 1997 was a pretty big upset as well. But nothing goes past 1999, 6th placed Carlton shocking a wasteful Essendon.

Adelaide pantsed us in the 98 prelim, we’d finished 2nd and belted the Eagles by 12 goals (IIRC) in the QF. That was a big upset considering Adelaide were pantsed by Melbourne in the first week.

Richmond have been the best team all year by a street. To not be playing in the GF is hard to believe.

Choked.

Richmond got totally outplayed for sure. But there is no guarantee for the Pies next week, especially if they play Melbourne but I think they (Collingwood) should beat West Coast. So for the 4th year in a row we'll have 2 different grand final teams. 7 different teams have made the last 4 grand finals Hawthorn, West Coast, Sydney, Western Bulldogs, Adelaide, Richmond and Collingwood, we can add an 8th if Melbourne win tomorrow under the sunshine in Perth.

I remember walking into the MCG for the 1999 prelim, and there was a huge line of Essendon fans already queing at the Ticketek for grand final tickets

Best day

They had to wait another 12 months.

Never get too carried away, same with me for Adelaide against Richmond last year. I knew it was no guarantee. It would be a lot worse losing to Collingwood though.

Is this that much of an upset? Pies team has had great blend of skill, speed, hardness and flair across the field. Some absolute guns only just starting to get recognized.

They really should have won the Eagles game, absolutely blew it in the 3rd quarter.

Essendon beating Carlton in 2000 would have to be right up there after a stinging loss against the dogs in round 21

Are you kidding? Essendon were outrageously dominant that year. The surprise was Melbourne bearing Carlton to make the GF

I think the 1999 Ess v. Carl would be the classic "go to" example of Prelim upset.

This 2018 Rich v. Coll would be right up there given Richmond's dominance this year, particularly at the MCG, but maybe not as spectacular or as iconic as the 1999 version.

Probably only because of the lack of a close finish

Collingwood was about $3.20 or so on BetFair. Think the relative ease of victory is playing a part in this.

Yeah that's true, this feels even weirder in that Collingwood smoked Richmond. Carlton/Essendon was only decided by one point, I think in a win/loss terminology it's a bigger upset though.

interesting question.
carlton came back from 3 goals down in the last, game was close for most of it.
collingwood leading all game and winning by a decent amount makes them look like a better side to begin with. collingwood have been a pretty good team all year, rather than luckily falling over the line at the right time of year. collingwood winning the premiership will make the prelim feel like less of an upset too.
