Yep I don’t think there are too many people in here who think Ned is best 22
I'm definitely in the not in best 22 camp and probably delist at the end of this season camp as well. Hopefully players like Taylor and Dowling and co can move past him this year.

23 though as a sub, sure.

Was a solid defensive forward, but was always a risk that when Keays moved out of the midfield, McHenry would get shuffled out, which has happened. Really, there isn't a whole lot of reasons to look in the Ned direction. Keays is better and Murphy is more suited to being a cheap general forward in our setup.

Today had the most match sim of any session thus far so a fair bit to take away.

Unfortunately as has been noted butts appeared to hurt his hamstring trailing burgess at half forward. Just can’t seem to get a good run at it.

Fortunately we may have a replacement ready to go soon as curtin looks significantly advanced with his rehab from the knee. Moved really well today and took part in some of the early skills work (even did one of his lovely sidesteps). Seemed quite energised today which may in part be to his family, I’m pretty sure at least, watching on from the side. If he’s not back in main training by Monday then it won’t be long after that.

Milera was doing some light running on the sidelines while murray and harry as usual were in the rehab group alongside curtin. Soligo made his way to the ground during the session, unsurprisingly he looked pretty sore. Welsh once again emerged from the gym to have a look but still no actual running or football work. Obviously no sloane there today. Dragon did nearly all the work but struggled with the running late in the session and headed up the race early. Don’t think it was due to injury however, more likely management.

Interestingly a bunch of the sanfl top ups took part today and didn’t look too bad (24 with the sleeve was probably the most impressive of the lot, big lad). Match sim consisted of three periods, the first of which didn’t have stoppages but the last two did. I didn’t note how long they actually were but the third of the periods seemed significantly longer than the others.

Teams were mostly the same throughout with a couple of changes, once again it was a clear A vs B scenario. Teams were as follows:

Blue (A team): Jones, Keays, Murphy, Crouch, Thilthorpe, Rachele, Pedlar (2nd and 3rd), Dawson, Walker, Michalanney, Hamill, Hinge, Rankine, Worrell, Laird, Fogarty, Smith, Parnell (2nd and 3rd), Sholl, Butts (before injury), O’Brien, Keane

Yellow (B team): Berry, Pedlar (1st), Edwards, Cook, Taylor, Burgess, Ryan, McHenry, Nankervis, Dowling, Himmelberg, Borlase, Gallagher, Parnell (1st), Bond, Gollant, Strachan and the top ups.

As you can see for some reason pedlar was initially in the B team before moving into the As. No idea why. Pistol’s switch to the As may have been due to the butts injury. Hamill in the As also surprised me.

For the As midfield rotations were typically two of Laird/Dawson/Crouch with the other spot filled by one of Rachele/Rankine/Pedlar. Only rarely was the mix Laird/Dawson/Crouch. Thilthorpe attended a small handful of centre bounces to replace rob. Yellow team was a mix of Berry/Taylor/Bond/Edwards with strachan rucking.

As you would expect the blue team won handsomely kicking 15 goals to five. Should be noted however that the yellow team was within a goal early in the last third before being blown away.

As for who kicked the goals:

Blue: Thilthorpe 4, Rankine 3, Walker 2, Laird 2, Fogarty, Keays, Pedlar, Michalanney

Yellow: Burgess, Bond, Cook, Berry, Top-up no.30

Given the team imbalance I was quite impressed by how the yellow side went in the first two periods. Ultimately it all became a bit much however particularly through the midfield where the blue boys were dominant. Unfortunately it meant the yellow forwards really struggled to have an influence as the ball was barely up there for a decent chunk of the match, so i can’t judge them too harshly.

I’ll go through all the players as there is quite a bit to say:

Jones - pretty quiet playing on the wing. Used the ball well when he got it but would’ve liked to see him have a greater influence.

Keays - was top notch early with his energy across half forward and was involved in several goals. Fell out of it a bit and had one of the more rotten snaps at goal on his right you will see.

Berry - thought he was the standout player in the yellow team with his clearance work (including one where he just disposed of laird) and involvement around the ground. Didn’t have a lot of support in there and should take real confidence from today.

Murphy - much quieter today and was largely blanketed by ryan from what I could tell.

Crouch - was terrific particularly with his work in tight. Would’ve had a number of clearances and ball use was sharp including a lovely 15m dab pass to tex for a goal as well as an assist to thilthorpe barely a minute later. Lock for round one.

Thilthorpe - struggled a bit early with his ability to judge the ball in the air and halfway through I would’ve given the points to dragon. Once filthy finally clunked one however it quickly turned around and he became quite dominant. Like many key forwards he really needs that early confidence with his marking to have an impact.

Rachele - thought he was very solid particularly in the middle where his speed and power stood out. He’s definitely driving with his legs more this summer. Can also be really strong at times - there was a moment in the forward pocket where he simply ripped the ball out of Ryan’s arms.

Pedlar - no idea why he was initially in the B team. Had a couple nice moments including a terrific fend and weave on the wing but overall I thought he was a bit off with his ball handling and kicking.

Edwards - played a mix of half back and midfield. Thought he struggled to have an influence in the guts but was quite prominent across half back particularly early in the match sim.

Dawson - actually pretty quiet today. Not that it is any sort of concern.

Walker - not dominant but was involved enough whether it was hitting the scoreboard or setting up others (including a delicious left foot dart to filthy)

Cook - quiet today aside from a joe the goose goal but like I said it was a tough gig playing forward for the yellow team.

Michalanney - not a huge amount of the pill but I liked his willingness to run with the ball when he did get it. Also kicked a rare goal from a 50m penalty.

Hamill - played in the As to my surprise but I thought he struggled a bit. Was quite fumbly and when he’s caught he rarely gets out of the tackle. In space his speed is incredible but he wasn’t able to find much today.

Taylor - copped yet another knock, this time an early stray elbow to the jaw from keays. Thankfully wasn’t serious. Didn’t get much of it early on but came to life in the final period with some nice clearances and great tackling. Ball use by foot was oddly a bit messy however.

Hinge - patrolled nicely across half back and was quite impressive with his intercept marking in particular. Has been a bit quiet since the xmas break so was good to see him perform well today.

Burgess - was quite good early taking a nice mark and slotting a goal. Struggled once the supply dried up however.

Ryan - very quiet today playing a mostly defensive role. Looks a little tired and lacked his usual run and creativity.

Rankine - gun. Clean as a whistle in the centre and kicked three snags including a freak snap while being tackled. Love him.

Worrell - struggled a bit with his positioning early on but soon found his rhythm and like hinge took some really nice intercept marks across half back.

McHenry - not his greatest day. Didn’t get a heap of it and ball use was questionable including a howler in the middle of the ground that was lucky to not result in an opposition goal.

Nankervis - thought he was very solid, his tackling and competitiveness in particular. Would like to see him get a chance in the As in the coming weeks, he looks pretty ready to me.

Laird - business as usual once stoppages were brought in.

Dowling - just ok. Did some sharp things with ball in hand but struggled to get a heap of it. Should’ve kicked a goal but uncharacteristically sprayed it.

Fog - bit more involved today and appeared to play a bit more up the ground than usual. Haven’t seen him clunk any big marks this preseason which he tends to do when at his best.

Smith - once again sharp today whether it was his intercept work or run and carry. Has hit a nice patch of training form.

Dragon - actually competed quite well on thilthorpe early days and even beat him convincingly once or twice. That quickly changed however and he wasn’t able to curtail filthy. Was caught a bit too far off riley at times, whether that is a fatigue or concentration thing I’m not sure.

Borlase - very little ball but definitely better than Wednesday with his body work on tex.

Gallagher - found a decent amount of ball playing in defence but does panic a bit under pressure. Obviously needs time and experience before I can really judge.

Parnell - thought he was pretty solid particularly once he moved into the As. Took a really nice intercept mark too. Copped a big hit which would have tested out the shoulder but he bounced up ok, hopefully his extra size helps this year.

Sholl - decent but thought he would’ve been more prominent given he had the luxury of playing for the As. Curious as to whether he plays round one.

Bond - found it a few times drifting forward but was largely ineffectual in the midfield. Want to see a bit more from him.

O’Brien - was good today particularly his work rate to help out in defence and clunked a couple marks. Probably broke even in the ruck with Strachan.

Gollant - quiet aside from a nice specky in the pocket. Similar case to cook.

Strachan - did some really nice tap work in the centre and got involved a bit around the ground. Tired a bit late unsurprisingly being the sole ruck.

Keane - very solid once again. Had a good summer the Irishman.

If milera doesn’t come up round 1 , I’d like to see Nank or Ryan depending on trial game form

I did look for you bigman! Where you talking to Milera?

"Keane - very solid once again. Had a good summer the Irishman"

I got to watch him pretty close. He was impressive, doing alot off extra things off ball that make me think he's starting to grasp the game better. Positioning for the outlet kick, protecting the ball carrier, body positioning, recovering quickly, repeat efforts. Tex let him know a few times.

Murphy getting blanketed by a first year player that was quiet bodes well for the 23+ AFL games he'll play this season

It's almost as if being a smaller lighter bodied player is a disadvantage... who could've possibly predicted

Please end my anxiety about this. Would appreciate a PM thanks DJ.

The more info the better, very much appreciated.

Big report I know but today was pretty close to an internal trial.

That's a pretty big tick for Ryan. Sure, down offensively, but if he's going to get games, it is going to be as alongside Hinge/Milera, and not as a primary half back flanker. If he can shut down guys who'll push up and be involved in a teams transition game for periods, he could easily find a role as a 7th-8th defender this year. After all, Adelaide's game is built on intercepting, and that helps.

Though, the problem with that assumption is if Murphy was quiet because others ran rampant. Because then it's just a 'life as a bottom-tier forward' kind of day.

Well they shouldn't have kept Davis on the list for that long and they shouldn't keep McHenry on after this year either unless he has a blinder of a year which I can't see happening.

Teams need depth - particularly when challenging for flags. If Ned is our 28-30 player on the list then we probably keep him in my view. If we need the list spot then every chance he is gone without a really good year

Just to clarify, with all the things going on at training it isn’t always clear what the match ups are. Ryan was certainly on murphy at least at stages but that does not mean they were matched up 100% of the match sim.

As for murphy himself, it was his first quiet session for a while. Chances are he just had middling game more than anything ryan or any other small defenders did. It wasn’t as if ryan was taking big marks on him or winning 1-on-1s. Murphy just couldn’t find space to receive the ball.

I probably should have clarified better when I wrote that, was a bit on an overstatement perhaps.

No kitm i believe that was a mate of his, probably coming to see how the hamstring was.

Agree on your points on keane. To think it was only this time last year that he turned up a bit out of condition and having not played footy in almost two years. Now he’s much fitter and practically a round one lock for a key defensive post.
