True.

However, he made the All Australian Squad as a midfielder in 2021/2022. And is still a 2 time All Australian which IMO moves him out of the B+ player range.

I think so. Same way that Jordan Dawson winning a club best and fairest in the year we finished 10th doesn't diminish his credentials.

He also finished 3rd in the B&F and made All Australian in 2017 when we finished top and made a grand final.

B&F finishing:

2017 - 3rd
2018 - Winner
2019 - 3rd
2020 - 2nd
2021 - Winner
2022 - Winner
2023 - 2nd

As a midfielder these past 3 years he has finished 4th, 1st and 8th in the AFL for disposals per game. He has ranked 11th, 5th and 5th for centre clearances per game the last 3 years. He has been 11th, 2nd and 8th in the league in tackles per game these past 3 years.

His accolades, stats and watching him play over the past 10 years tells me he is nowhere near a B+ grade footballer.
You do know you are arguing with someone who stated Laird is a C grader. There's no dispute Laird was an A grader HB and his ball user was very good playing in that position but isn't as effective in the midfield. Dawson is clearly an A grader and trending to be elite and Rankine will be an A grader at the end of this year, do you think Laird is as good as them?

We're a public company. We're absolutely owned by our members. Indeed, the AFL is considered a member.

We have a mechanism to revert the voting rights to eligible members in our constitution. In effect we've temporarily assigned the voting rights during the period of a loan in exchange for that loan to one specific class of member.
You're like those RI share holders I keep seeing who hold .00000000000000000000000001% of a public listed stock and have a voting power of .0000000000000000000000000001% but kept posting it's "their" company lol.

I just want to hear the story of how old mate was kicked out of the cheer squad.

The squad isn't a real accolade. Not to the same degree as the team.

Dawson winning it in a non-finals team (which was better than any of the three that Laird won in) does diminish the accolade comparative to say, the best and fairest of the premiers.

Which is the point. They don't have a universal value.

Out of interest, where do you think he'd rank amongst all of the midfielders in the league?
Rory Laird would be included in the first CBA in Rd 1 for any of the 18 teams.

We have probably 8ish youngsters who might consider themselves midfielders now or someday. How many of them would you say will match Laird's career?

I just can't understand why all the d### measuring about a guy who has always been one of our best, even in our strongest teams.

I responded to a bunch, but have deleted them. This is a good thread, and a public service being provided by Bigman, let's not clog it more than we have.

There'll be plenty more opportunities for us to do this same old song and dance throughout the year.

Well come on to get the latest on training to find petty discussion on Lairds rating as a player along with some intense insult throwing
that would make Sanders proud but of absolutely no value.
Well we give the man a topic title and firstly doesn't bother to drive to Port Lincoln and back to give first hand info on trial so we didn't have to sit through that podcast or whatever it was .
Ok let us down once but oh no he gets the times wrong and again no report .
Maybe the heading could be spasmodic training reports.

.

Bigman missing a report? Outrageous.

I blame the club. Don't they know that the Bigman reports are the most important part of preseason? Did they not have a phone to let the superstar know.
Once Bigman gives his all clear that he can make a training, THEN burgess and the coaches can begin planning.

bigman - As someone who attends so many trainings and has such a good eye - I was just curious to get your thoughts on the overall fitness level of the squad and if Burgess is doing anything 'elevated' with the squad this year compared to previous years?

This is his 3rd preseason with our squad now. Be interesting to see if we have started to go up a gear now our squad is a little more mature and he has had em for 3 years.

This is his 4th preseason with our squad now. Be interesting to see if we have started to go up a gear now our squad is a little more mature and he has had em for 4 years.
It's only his third pre-season.

Good to see our list looking a bit healthier as we get closer to the season.

Only soligo, sloane, murray and schoenberg in the rehab group today, which is quite a bit less than a week or so ago when it also contained the likes of butts, milera, gollant, and fog at times.

Butts did all the work and got through unscathed, as did fog. Milera did all the early stuff but sat out the match sim, I’m assuming he’s ok but worth noting. Soligo did a mixture of laps and high speed running, looks to be moving well. Sloane did just running wearing sunglasses. Murray has added more lateral movement exercises to his running. Interestingly, welsh did all the training today, including the match sim.

Only injury worry is crouch who left field holding hand. Not sure how serious. Ryan also left track early but this maybe more management.

Rankine was also wearing a fluro hat so must have some sort of niggle, seemed to move just fine although he did play exclusively forward.

Structure of training was largely the same as previous weeks. Teams split off into midfielders and forwards/defenders working on seperate drills, followed by the squad being divided into three teams playing match sim without stoppages, with one team rotating off each time there was a score or break in play.

Finally there was a small amount of match sim, around 15-20 minutes. Teams were as follows:

Blue: Jones, Keays, Crouch, Thilthorpe, Rachele, Dawson, Walker, Michalanney, Hamill, Hinge, Rankine, Worrell, Laird, Fogarty, Smith, Borlase, Sholl, O’Brien, Keane

White: Berry, Murphy, Curtin, Pedlar, Edwards, Cook, Taylor, Burgess, Ryan, McHenry, Nankervis, Dowling, Himmelberg, Gallagher, Parnell, Bond, Butts, Welsh, Gollant, Strachan, Madgen

Not too many surprises. Hamill was in with milera not playing, both pedlar and murphy were on the ‘b’ team which was interesting, and borlase played in the ‘a’ team ahead of butts.

For mine the standout was worrell, I thought he looked more energised and involved than previous sessions. He’s also a pretty good defender with his closing speed and willingness to jump at the ball, it’s really only the contests of strength where he struggles a bit. I do worry however about the way in which he lands - he really commits to the ball in the air which is commendable but quite often he lands awkwardly and I fear he may hurt himself at some point.

As for some other players:

Curtin - thought he moved a bit better today although still not at 100 percent. There was a moment in the intra club on Friday where there was a loose ball and he couldn’t turn particularly well. This is guy who can dance on a dime so I hope his knee heals enough before the season starts. He took an intercept mark on tex in the match sim (albeit from a poor incoming kick) and used the ball well as always. He’s still playing a bit deep for my liking - I’d like to see him pushed up the ground a tad so he can be used more coming out of d50.

Edwards - feels like things are coming together nicely for him. For a big lad he runs like the wind and has a touch of silk. Still not sure he plays afl this year but his development over the summer has been quite impressive

Walker - building very nicely. Took a typical tex half volley followed by wheeling onto his left and one of the most beautiful left foot darts to thilthorpe that you will see.

Taylor - interesting to note that after the match sim he was doing some running work under the eye of burgess. Didn’t appear to be injured so perhaps the gps data suggested he hadn’t run enough?

Ryan - thought he looked quite refreshed and up and about today after having his loads managed. As mentioned he did go up the race a bit early but not sure there’s anything sinister going on there.

Gallagher - ball handling is definitely a strength of his, rarely fumbles, but he does get caught holding the ball a lot at the moment. Keep expectations pretty low in the first half of the sanfl season as he gets used to the game.

Butts - thought he moved well and even ran with the ball on occasions which we rarely see. Took a nice contested mark too. Curious to see where the coaches have him presently.

Welsh - kicked a goal in match sim and even though he didn’t get much of it his speed stood out. He’s got some real acceleration which makes him dangerous on the lead. Also put on the jets chasing after a loose ball and was seriously fast. Kicking isn’t textbook but overall an exciting talent for sure. Good to see him fully training too.

O’Brien - took a couple of really nice clunks where he was just too strong for strachan. Didn’t take any marks in the intra club on Friday so hopefully he can rectify that this week, it’s the cornerstone of his game.

Gollant - took a really nice contested grab pushing up to half back with keane right on his hammer. He didn’t like the treatment he got from the Irishman and shook his head in disapproval. Not the first time I’ve seen keane get a bit nasty at training!

Over the last 3 years we've all been wondering when the Wall will hit Tex, and each year he keeps on performing (TBH he seems to be improving which is miraculous).

With what you've seen in Pre-season, do you think the Wall hits this year, or do you think he has a full season of Benjamin Buttoning still to come?

Personally I hope the late career resurgence continues. I know it might potentially slow the development of a few Key forwards around him. But IMO its not his job to give them his spot. Its their job to take it, and right now no-one is in the same league as Tex as a true KPF.

I think it's odds on that Keane gets suspended at some point for giving a forward a bit of treatment in a marking contest. He just loves that bit of niggle.

Would love to see Keane and Murray form a nasty little defensive duo. Wouldn't like to play on either of those angry dudes!

I like that fact that we are playing Rankine in the middle but I hope he always starts forward and then we throw him in the centre when the other midfielders aren’t getting it done. He so creative in out forward half and don’t want to lose that.
The great thing is hearing is that our Coaches are training the players to have a lot of so flexibility, Blighty loved that and throw players around when things weren’t working. Looking forward to a big you from us
