I can see Weiters missing the first month then coming back and dominating, only to miss the AA team again due to playing less games. Seems to always find a way to miss that team (mostly not his fault).

Hopefully the 6-8 week timeline from the HS is accurate as I think we will need him early. Daniher, Lynch, Larkey in our first 3 games

Obviously Russell doesn't know what he's doing..

In isolation you wouldn't say that obviously but it has been the unfortunate hallmark of Russell's tenure with us. I don't think anyone would deny that.

There is no need to flog our players to the point of breaking in preseason - we've got a very experienced team now. Second-most 25-29 year olds in the comp. Seeing pics of all our players with hands on knees clearly pushing the limits of endurance in match play simulation at this stage seems OTT to me - then a couple of days later the news comes through our 2nd most critical player is out for 8 weeks. It's disappointing.

We're ridiculing other clubs lack on intensity in preseason training videos in other threads but all we need for the rest of this preseason is zero additional injuries.

Which one? Surely we can find a way to include Jordan Russell in this? He's also been a favourite whipping boy around these parts!

I mean, it's obvious that the forward line's new running patterns have thrown the backline out of sync, thereby causing Jacob's injury.

There ... feels like 2012 again already! ;)

Welcome back Jordy .... and get better quickly Weiters!!

Bugger.. Hope Weiters has a chat with Jack Martin to find out what worked for him in the end. Make it a one-off rather than recurring issue.

No injuries are ever welcome news but if we were going to cop one to an important player, the type of injury sustained and timing are at least palatable. He should be regaining full fitness around the time of round one. As others have said, it's important not to rush him back as calf issues can persist if not dealt with properly in the first instance. I'm sure our first class medical team will have this sorted.

It potentially presents an opportunity to test our depth. Do we run with Kempy, March and McG or do we replace with Durds or Lewis. My preference is to go with the smaller set up and roll the dice. Next choice is Durds and two of Kempy, Marchy and McG. I have lost faith in young Lewis. Too timid for mine.

High grade means damage to more than 50% of the muscle.

That will mean moonboot and avoiding use for a while, so he'll need to rehab the whole leg to an extent.

Obviously we've got the facilities and staff, but I would be cautious.

Better for Jacob to miss 4 rounds and play the rest then recurring injuries plaguing his season

I assume high grade means a full tear (grade 3), not a partial tear (grade 2)? At least its not bad enough that surgery is required or the club would have said so.

Curious where the heraldsun sun got the 6-8 week time frame from, considering the club didn't give a timeline. The last high grade calf strain we had was Williams and he was 10-12 weeks (ended up missing 13), although I understand every injury is unique.

The Weitering one worries me, calf muscles injuries are different. Often you tear a muscle you are just damaging muscle, with bad calf muscles you tend to also damage the tendons in the muscle as well which are slow healing. Have seen too many players miss a lot longer than expected. Jack Martin, Ed Curnow etc. He's also the last player we want to be without in the team, he's the hardest to replace and super important. Early games against Brisbane's tall forward line with Daniher and Hipwood then Tom Lynch followed by Nick Larkey. We will be hoping he is back for the 5th game of the season featuring Taylor Walker.

A replacement will be interesting. It appeared that Durdin had overtaken Young as the next tall defender to come in and partner Weitering should we need an extra tall second defender. Partnering Weitering and replacing Weitering are two different things. Young isn't a good option to partner Weitering but has proven a good option to replace him so it's going to be interesting to see who is picked should Weitering miss.

The benefit of this is that Weitering will know what "calf awareness" feels like. The feeling before it goes. I did my first at the end off the 2023 season, it felt like a knot in the calf which I was waiting to get to half time to get rubbed out, nothing malicious in it, then it went just before half time arrived and went big, bad tear, it's still there, can feel it after a long day, but my rehab has been very lazy so there is that. That means you may see him in the future come off and get it looked at or sub out of games which is a good thing. Fingers crossed we don't and this never turns up again.

He's young, fingers crossed the muscle responds to rehab and heals well in good time.

Williams injury was an Achilles that was 12 weeks plus

They are bypassing injecting calfs blood to aid recovery, opting instead to just transplanting the entire calf.
