There are a squillion small forwards/flankers in this particular draft so we will bring in a likely best 22 small forward for Eddie to mentor in the next few years, and then have a go at getting Papley the year after if still required.

It’s always more exciting when you land these trades, but we will get Martin through the pre-season draft and then hit the draft.

Good god SOS is unflappable though.

Sydney offered Essendon pick 9 and a future first; so it’s clear they tied the Papley outcome to the JD outcome. It’s also clear that SOS sold them; the rest hinging on their ability to sell Essendon on their own offer. For those who are upset, perhaps some of that frustration may be better directed at the other 2 clubs involved. That’s life. Move on.

If Gold Coast redraft him, he would become the highest paid player at the Gold Coast for one year, then become a restricted free agent at the end of the year. The plan would be to put $1million plus on his head, moving him out of Melbourne's reach. Draft him at #3 in the PSD then renegotiate his contract for multiple years, which would reduce the actual money paid, but the million would still count on next year's cap, where we have the space due to paying under the cap for a number of seasons. Hope that made sense.

I admire your positivity but you are naive as hell. If you have players nominating, you do everything you can to get them to the club.
SOS did not try hard enough.

Papley was always a big risk, which is why we should have had other plays ready. 9 for 15 & and martin effectively means we gave up the equivalent of pick 44 for Martin. Or a mid 3rd rounder. You do that every day of the week. Not only do we now have no players, but future players will think twice about nominating us. Martin will probably be so pi**ed off now he'll go to another club, if GC don't re-draft him first. You better pray we get Martin in a Draft otherwise this is one of the all time biggest Draft Fails in the club's history.

Ok genius, tell me how exactly we could have got Papley without the Daniher deal being made......

Ill wait.

It is guaranteed. We have third pick in PSD and will simply frontload his contract to make him too expensive for GC or Melbourne. Plus it’s doubtful they would grab a player that doesn’t want to play at their club even if they had room in salary cap.

So many players were guaranteed to come.
So which A grade talent was available for us to grab with pick 9 ?

We missed both Coniglio and Shiel for starters......B grade (potential A) in Papley

Mate they are already calling us the new Fremantle on the radio, the team that chases targets and fails, no matter how you twist it this is not good for the CFC, we where on a steady rise in public perception, on and off field, and this has knocked us hard. While it is far from the end of the world it is a very bad result for the footy club, and the recruiting team as a whole will have to answer to the board who will not be happy with how this has played out.

Serious question; how do we get Martin now? There's no PSD, so it's just the ND. We have picks 9, 43, 57, 70 and 85 (at the moment). Clearly we won't be using 9, so how do we get him at 43? Or am I missing something? Do we just offer him a year at $2,000,000 to put everyone else off and after that year redraft him on the cheap?

Makes Eddie trade even better, a good place holder of sorts for a year before getting a papley or someone else next year

Had Wines asking to come to Carlton and said no.

Failed to get Papley.

Failed to get Martin.

Bye SOS.

Seriously. Fair and reasonable deals were tabled for both players and GC and Sydney elected not to trade, as is their right.

I’m sure we’re all pretty frustrated right now but there’s no way Martin was worth a first rounder when GC dropped him late in the year. It was incumbent on GC to take the trade or lose him for nothing. We didn’t gain anything there, but we sure as hell didn’t lose anything and could still get him for free.

As for Papley. What they hell were they supposed to do? Can’t remember a top 10 pick every being tabled for a small fwd and it was conditional on the Daniher trade.

Can’t see what all the hatred is about. On balance I’m sure our recruiters did what’s best for the club and it’s not worth compromising our future picks/opportunities by paying huge overs just to get two players in.

So the Suns wanted pick 9 and a future second for Jack Martin and pick 15... No ******* way he is worth that.

Y'all need to chill out, he is not worth that. If he comes in the PSD good, if not at least we didn't over pay.
WTF? A difference of approx 350 point or A mid 3rd rounder? If we had of given them pick 47 for him, most would have been happy with that?
