***************************************************

Just like to thank Aphrodite and the other Carlton mods who started the Bluemours NON Discussion Thread and who have kept it free of chat over the past few years.

It helps so much when you just don't have the time to read through this thread, cheers and great job.

Following Zac Williams I think we target one more player but don’t think it will be Wines who would cost $800kish.

I think we will go for one more player in the 600k or cheaper range like Saad/Viney.

Yes we can spend 105% of the salary cap but we still need to remember we have our young kids coming through who will start demanding money soon.

we got our number 1 target, I think improvement now will come through natural progression

Midfield of Coniglio, Taranto, Kelly, Whitfield, Hopper, Green, Ward........Nice dream.

All sounds good on face value, but a lot more required from the whole.
Not knocking your post but this is the trap we fall into. i.e. Get the midfield right and everything else will take care of itself......no....it won't.

Ward has been injured when they were challenging. Who are the workhorses in that group, the true inside beasts?

Whitfield didn't cut it in the midfield so got moved to HB to get true value out of him. Coniglio and Kelly aren't true distributors and aren't overly physical players.

GWS got too many ball users and not enough ball winners. Essendon have been going the same route.

I don't think a midfield will fix everything but what we do know is our midfield puts pressure on our backline which is otherwise a pretty solid unit and can't capitalise on our forward line which is potentially elite.

Our defense has been exceptional this year and we have two of the most exciting young tall forwards in the game in Harry and Charlie. McGovern needs to get his act together but our bookends are taken care of. We need a few small up forward but if we get the midfield right our lines are looking very very good.

Midfield rotation of Cripps, Wines, Walsh, Viney, Williams, Setterfield. Holy sh*t. Nice dream.

We would be talking about this team as a Premiership contender. What a dream scenario.

It's a tough game getting all the right pieces in their place and having them believe in what the club is selling.

More and more I feel it to be so important to play this game like chess. It's not so much of the value of the pieces you have but for the positioning of them.

Yep. Midfield of Gawn, Oliver, Viney, Petracca, Harmes, and Brayshaw finished 17th last year. We are actually a decent clearance side. Yes we need support for Cripps, but fixing that won't fix Carlton. We need to fix a bunch of things, including disposal, transition speed, delivery inside 50, on-field leadership, forward pressure, defensive running, and our forward structure.

Ollie Wines still has 2 years to go on his contract. Would be expensive to get him from Port.

Viney for free would be awesome but if we can come to a fair agreement with Port, we'd choose Ollie over Viney?

Go the cheaper. Both would contribute positively.

Looks good in blue etc...

My one and only reservation on Saad is Essendon and Dodo's asking price (if he nominates us)

Dodoro doesn't particularly worry me in this case. He has no hand here with Saad out of contract.

If Saad does want out they'll need to come to the table and be reasonable or they simply risk losing the player for nothing.

We'll enter negotiations in good faith of course, but we cannot and will not be hijacked by his rubbish. At the first sight of stalling we should simply do what St Kilda did last year with Fremantle, call their bluff and continue on our merry way with any other targets.

St Kilda got shit done last trade period, but most impressive was their work in dealing with Bell and Fremantle with regards to the Hill trade. Fremantle demanded a first round pick, so St Kilda simply traded down.

You are clearly trying to be conservative with our draft picks or our salary cap with your choices. Is that because you wish to hit the draft or feel like we have other areas you want to spend that currency on?

Both really

If an elite, contracted player pokes his head up, we can go hard, if not, given the nature of this draft, there could be some gems come our way

We then retain next year's 1st and it starts all over again

Problem may be, North are interested in Saad also, Essendon may be interested in Ben Brown (if Daniher were to leave). Could that lead to a deal between them. Though if he nominates us, that's a different matter.

No quality player will go to north, they are in full rebuild as we were years ago and no one of note came to us.Fringe players and others looking for their super will go there.

We may never lose a clearance again.

But we also may get slaughtered on the outside, difficult balance.

Williams, Walsh, Fisher on the outside. We should be okay.
