Look, there's a lot of sense about Wines going to Melbourne in the event they lose Oliver.

He's a good replacement; by all accounts would like to come back to VIC; would play out his career with his best mate Viney who just re-signed for 5 years.

A lot can change in a few weeks so it could happen. But surely not in a deal involving *.

Still though - A senior player going to a club because your mate plays there, is a weird thing....Isn't it?
Not weird at all. I'm sure there are plenty of players who've moved for friends and family. Hell, its now well-known that part of the reason Shiel picked * is because his boi Devon (seriously, who called their kid Devon?) was already there.

my his makes me so angry with the AFL. Bunch of buddy buddy hypocrites.

geez, we're a precious bunch...
who cares. FWIW, i think the AFL have done an incredible job this season led by Gil. I can't think of many professional, national competitions that could of done what the AFL did this year given the amount of roadblocks (pardon the pun) thrown at them. The game couldn't be in better hands.
Bashing the AFL about everything is so tiresome.

anyway, back to Oliver. Would be an incredible get but struggle to work how we get him without having to give up a quality player let alone a high end pick.

Hope this talk of Oliver to Carlton is true, but finding it hard to figure out how we would get it done without getting Saad in the PSD.

Future picks.

I'm fairly sure the way the pay cut works is that it is a percentage value taken off every player's contract.

So if Martin is on $1mil for the first year, and Cam Polson is on $100k, then Martin stands to lose $300k while Polson on loses $30k.

So if we sign Saad via the PSD on a front loaded contract, that doesn't make him exempt from an industry-wide pay cut. If anything, it makes him more vulnerable to it.
I agree. So if we front load his contract, we need to pay him more, because we are taking some of his salary from future years (which won't be covid affected) and paying now (which is covid affected). COVID seems to have ruined the opportunity to walk a player through the PSD. Would you agree?

Surely we could get to the same point without * involved

Carlton
Give: 7 & future first to Melbourne
Receive: Oliver

Port
Give: Wines + 2nd
Receive: Pick 7 + Melbourne 2nd

Melbourne
Give: Oliver
Receive: Wines + Port 2nd

We then tell Dodo we have pick 27 or you can have 2021 2nd rounder and a Kennedy type.....come back to us with your choice

Just in, “Gillon McLachlan announces multi million dollar AFL Ambassadorial role for Clayton Oliver to stay at Melbourne Football Club to help with promotion of the game due to poor attendances in 2020 season, more news at 50 hundred o’clock”.

This trade scenario doesn't even need to include Port. Blues - Dees exchange components and then Dees can trade with Port separately.
Keeping the moving parts to a minimum is key.

One thing saying, "If you can get me across, I'll come" and a much more difficult thing getting a deal done.
All looks so very difficult on face value, unless Melbourne an Oliver have hit an impasse.

The Viney contract though just somehow makes the whole idea somewhat more feasible.
Maybe Wines wanted to know that Viney won't be picked up elsewhere before he weighed up the idea of coming to Melbourne.

Yes and especially when the club is Melbourne...
