I feel like our forward line was in a holding pattern in 2020 in terms of improvement.

Curnow not playing.
Martin new to the team.
Eddie new to the team.
No consistent/long term small forward solutions.
Pretty poor entries due to our workmanlike midfield.
Minimal team training making it hard to really improve.

On top of the above, McGovern has had an interrupted run since he got to Carlton which hasn’t helped.

His biggest problem is that in his poor games he’s non-existent. Teague should have thrown him around earlier in the season to get his hands on it. They finally threw him back for a half against Brisbane, which was bizarre considering he actually looked decent in the second half against Adelaide.

I firmly believe he can still be a really good player for us. A big 2021 looms.

So all this media talk about JDG had me thinking, and I’m glad some of the ITK’s have confirmed it’s a money grab because I think our focus should be on the midfield. But what if this is a ploy by Austin & Co who’ve leaked this info to get the attention of some of those midfielders we have been targeting to make their mind up sooner as we’re showing we’re actively trying to spend our cash to better the club. It seems to have worked on someone like Saad.. Williams is different as he’s a RFA but even so he’s nominated us a long way out

If so, it’s genius by our list management staff

I wouldn't be surprised if there's an element of that. But also a calculated response to some suggestions in the media that we're bursting our cap with Saad + Williams. "Is that what you think? Well...how about we casually leak that we're considering a play for Million Dollar De Goey."

Even if we have no intention of pursuing De Goey, it does signal to other players in the comp that we're not done yet, and if they're entertaining a move then maybe their management should drop us a line. There's been plenty of talk about players approaching us, not just the other way around. So letting them know we're not done yet might open up a few more options for us.

On the De Goey front, I found Buckley's comments pretty telling. De Goey enjoys being at Collingwood, and Collingwood want to keep him. But he has external pressure from people around him to chase a payday. A very public reminder to De Goey that perhaps those people don't have his best interests at heart. I think he stays, on a decent but not incredible contract, and probably bounces back to some good form next year when the contract speculation is off his plate.

I doubt 70 odd goals in 45 games is beginners luck. I reckon he would be smart business and with our forward line would be one of the most dangerous players going around

I think so as well.
I'd be very keen on him at the right price.

Many projected Stephenson as a mid/wingman in time, yet he struggles to stay in the game and his field kick was never great as a junior

His speed off the mark, caught many off guard in his first year, but opposition clubs/players worked out his strengths/weaknesses and has generally struggled since

Still has time, but I wouldn't take the risk

I'd take the risk at the right price.

Always felt Jarrad was a bit unfairly maligned, even with the run of niggly suspensions.

Was it a two or three year contract he was holding out on? Either way he showed he was worth it.
Did he?

He had 1 season where he played out the year, and the rest it was back to usual. Get a run of games together, start looking like a legit top 10 player in the league, bang niggling injuries for the rest of the year.

I don't think we really missed out on anything.

All these destructions of the English language are spot on ... but my pet hate is "like" in every second sentence. Soon as I hear that, I switch off and can get very direct with people using it in conversation with me. Couldn't care less if I offend them.

Never heard of him before, only noticed him when looking at the Eagles list.

Don't know if he is available.

You would think he would be cheapish value, has great pedigree,
fills a need and you would hope would like to play with Betts

So... you've never actually seen him play ? Literally just seen his name written down.

Man you see some crazy stuff in this thread

I think you mean "I could care less"

Giving us a lecture on how you hate incorrect language and you butcher it yourself, sheesh!

Soon as I? 🤣

We're here to talk football FFS.

Incorrect plural of Latin words piss me off eg formulas instead of formulae, forums instead of fora, stadiums instead of stadia, consortiums instead of consortia. Also those who, when referring to a singular, use the plural eg data instead of datum, criteria instead of criterion.
Pernickety pedants probably pursue perfection. Possible party-poopers.

The people on the pies forum are now saying we should give up Charlie and pick 7 for JDG because we won't give up McKay or TDK and it sounds most logical 😂😂

Ok so Collingwood and Essendon can battle to the death for #7.

I rate Stephenson. But I do remember having a laugh during his press conference after he was caught betting on footy. He said something like, ‘this incident has almost caused me to never want to a have a punt again’. I thought it was pretty amusing that it was ‘almost’ enough but not quite enough to stop him from getting back on the punt. It was a very serious incident after all. Probably just loose language by a 20yo kid which is obviously forgivable. But I don’t think he’s the sharpest knife in the draw in any case
So about as sharp as 98% of AFL players?

Are they? According to who?

If they're that desperate to get rid of him, I'm a very willing buyer at what could be a heavily discounted price.

But I don't think they're anywhere near as desperate as you are suggesting.

This.
Sure he's had some off-field issues, but lets not forget he's only 21.
I'd be very keen at the right price.
