There's no way out of this for Collingwood and how they plotted to take this stance with their players, regardless of what they may have done....would be comical if it wasn't so patently insensitive, aggressive and stupid.

How the hell did this company line come about? It's something that would have happened in the 80's with a kilo of coke strewn across the boardroom table.
It's just weird.....and what do they do now?
...and potentially actionable.

I think it needs to go back to preventative measures.

1. Draftees should be signed to 3 year initial deal and or a decreasing scale, trades should only take place if both parties agree

2. Abolish PSD

3 RFA - Acquiring club pays 50% of the compensation, coming off their first live pick

AFL still get their yearly meat market, while having more protective measures

1605250709567.png Agree with all points except "3. RFA" It depends on who determines the level of compensation involved. and how it is calculated.

Do you think so? How may that play out as the players ultimately had choices...even if they weren't great choices.

Could have been fun if Treloar dug his heels in and said - fu** you.
what do you think we will use our picks on in the draft

I doubt it goes down this road, but a manager actively white anting an employee who has otherwise done all requested of him is not a good look. Misrtruths and misrepresentation in the media, damage to his reputation and personal brand, damage to the reputation and personal brand of his wife, blatantly lying to an employee in an attempt to disrupt relations with co-workers. It's egregious bullying.

Mental anguish piled on an employee with known mental health issues. It's effectively creating an unsafe work environment.

Yes on all counts especially 3. Diluting the draft is a joke. Free agency anything but.

Williams, Caldwell, Hatley, Corr and Cameron this year from one side.
Williams simply for money, Caldwell probably different reasons but also getting paid big overs, and Corr I imagine also for financial reasons.
how many players stay for massive unders at a young age? Look at GWS, Collingwood or even west Coast, they are/were keeping them but still have to pay up.
I look at teams like Richmond, Geelong, Collingwood, West Coast even Port and wonder who would you would be willing to target and pay ~50% more then what they would be getting? I could easily see a situation where someone comes out and offers McKay that with a $900k offer on the back of a few big games.
King at St Kilda is probably someone who will get similar who is playing finals, apparently his brother is already on $600k next year.

You are all over the place.

Will try my best to dissect it

GWS should never be used as a measuring stick of list management, they had more TPP and still overpaid, going all in to share a flag.

Pies also went all in and mismanaged their list

If players have previously been on a good wicket without success, they will leave for less money to chase one, Lake, Lynch, Redden all come to mind

I think he was way off the mark though, we have had a huge amount of first round picks over the previous 5 drafts, plus we have brought in players like Setterfield who were high picks a couple of years before we selected them. The last thing we needed was another 18 year old.

I understand the point you are making and that so far the development of our young mids has been disappointing given the large outlay, but there is a lot of upside still there. We desperately need to start winning games and playing finals now or else we are going to start to have to overpay to retain the talent we have, this is where he is wrong, we needed to improve our starting 22 NOW.

Conversely, he will be very upbeat about his beloved Saints, who made some good trades last year. Really, who in the Saints 22 and under at the start of the year were showing great potential before they started going all in for the now? Gresham (older than Weiters) and Hunter Clark ( and even he was more potential than anything substantial on field). They had a few make very good strides this year (Coffield and King), but before this year there was very little to be excited about in their young brigade.

In short, we need to start winning and the notion that we needed to hold on a while longer and concentrate on more 18 year olds is ridiculous.
The lack of progress of Dow and Lob is a big reason our strategy is being opened up a bit by observers. Had these two come on as expected relative to their draft group we would be banging the door down from that age bracket perspective. Cunningham and SPS on top add to that 'not quite landed yet' group. Thats 4 top 10 picks (Cunners close enough) that have not performed yet to their draft position would expect. You look at the top 10 of Dow and Lob's draft and we have managed to pick the 2 strugglers to this point unfortunately. Not saying it can't change just hasn't yet.

Anyway, back to our football club..

I feel our overall trade period was a B+

We brought in two quality players and one player that we gave up very little for.

We overpaid for Saad, but with a comprised draft and the young talent we already have on our list drafting shouldn't and isn't our highest priority.

Throw in Kemp, Marchy and another preaseason into our younger players, we have the control our own fate as we have no excuses now.

In saying that, I still feel we're an A grade mid amd a quality small forward short from being a genuine contender.. who knows who might step up in 2021?

McCartney nails it...Dodoro does his club and his targeted players no favours with the blood out of a stone approach. Where has it left them? It's the most motley list in the AFL. Rather than take a positive outcome from Saad and invest it, he tries to double down...who cares if Dunkley isn't worth two rounders, Essendon went hard at him, got him and Pickering on side in the media, garnered the assets, and still they still managed to sh*t the bed...pick 8 was effectively house money. Dunkley was the right type, right age and ideal temperament for a pretty volatile Essendon environment. Dunkley, Shiel and Merrett would have been one of the best on ball brigades, potentially for years to come. Now he's got a rag tag list and opposition list managers with long memories.

As for Crows...while we have been beneficiaries, I can't see a reason to retain the PSD. At least with Martin we know we put a reasonable offer up, and there were extenuating circumstances.

Said it a few days ago, but something has changed.
Players, player managers, CEO's, list managers, ex-list managers etc have somehow found it more comfortable to simply tell their story. (Collingwood excluded)

I don't recall this level of transparency before, even if it is a 'subjective' transparency.
How did this come about and who/what set it in motion? I really like it even for the fact it carries its own bias, opposed to the robotic replies we've had before.

ok charlie is good now.
So we be patient and get him back mid season.
honey i'm excited about
You gonna finish that sentence?

This is exactly why I believe Austin was right to say fu** it and get Saad in and move on instead of continuing dealing with Dodo.

It seems that Dodo is only interested in zero sum negotiations. It’s old school and antiquated and frankly isn’t in the best interest of the club he serves from a list strategy perspective.
To use a cliche Dodo is prepared to ‘cut off his nose to spite his face’.

I think the Dunkley deal best encapsulates this, here’s a guy who has nominated your club, is young, fits your club needs, and prized by his current club and touted as a future captain.

No disrespect to Heppell’s football abilities but he has all the leadership qualities of a Hawaiian shirt. Dunkley would have been a prize acquisition and had the potential to influence the culture of the club and convince want away players to stay. You get that deal done. If it’s two first then you do it.

Good luck to him with his prized first round picks in a compromised draft, I’m sure he’ll be able to trade in three walk up starts /s

But fu** I’m glad Austin is smart enough to realise that there’s no reasonable deal possible with Dodo. Might as well bang your head a couple of times against the wall before you start dealing with him to level the playing field

I think what he meant to say was that their salary cap was overblown...

I don’t get why they just don’t admit it and say it’s now completely under control post a strategic review of our TPP strategy for the now and moving forward.

Nothing shuts down a witch hunt more at my work than to just put up your hand and say “yep, we ****ed up but we are putting plans and refining process to make sure it doesn’t happen again”.

Then, just make sure it doesn’t happen again

Big yes to all those suggestions.

Agree with these. Less so point 3.

Apologies if it’s already been said. But in terms of keeping players at clubs and also keeping players in the system longer. I was a huge fan of the reduction in salary cap usage for veterans. I can’t remember the specifics but I feel like it was 10 years service at one club means only half the players wage counts towards the cap.

Would mean player retention would be higher as players know they might get better offers late in their career if they are one club players.
Also means less pressure for great players to be forced off lists. Simpson for example may have gone on if he knew his wage wasn’t hurting our cap as much.
