Sounds familiar.

Also think Worpel was the consensus #1 a year out and ended up going in the 50s(?).

That final junior year gives clubs a lot more information to work with.

Oliver, Bont, Sidebottom all bolters who wouldn't have had the chance to had this been their draft year.

Clubs with top picks this year would miss out on any Oliver types who could have had a big draft year but weren't necessarily in calculations in their underage year. There's no doubt picks this year are worth less.

He came in, scrapped our existing list for parts & slashed salaries - you don't do that unless you're thick-skinned.
At the trade table he was certainly creative but he also carried a certain reputation for staring down opposing list managers, which is why some were pining for SOS' return once the Saad deal had gone through.
I doubt for a second that when discussing a deal that SOS at any point was saying anything to the effect of "c'mon mate, this deal is great for both of us" & some of his commentary on TR validates my perspective.
It's all part of the caper but pretending that it was ever about achieving an equitable outcome is the stuff of fantasy.
Austin appears to have a different approach and frankly, there are a number of ways to get the job done, frankly, I couldn't care less about the cult of personality or the identity of the person performing the role, I just want the job done well.

I am happy with where the club is going (no sour grapes here) I think Austin is doing good so far; it is a given we are going to have to pay a premium to fill in the gaps of our list. Comparing him to SOS is beside the point though.

SOS came into this club when it was a dry, scorched, barren basket case.

I said he pursued equitable outcomes...What deals were so one sided that you believe opposition list managers were coerced? Yes GWS had salary cap issues, do you think The Bulldogs stared down Collingwood and their reputation has suffered because of it...Hardly. Or Out of contract players should be valued the same as those contracted? Who decides what a player is worth when they are injury prone? He did leverage deals but never made outrageous demands.

I like our approach to list management this year as well; but can also acknowledge it is a luxury afforded to those in a position to do so.

That interview is all class.

The way he talks about how the recent way he was treated doesnt diminish his love and appreciation for what they have done for him in the past.

Really let the Pies off the hook there.

Love how much he talks his partner up. Supports her and appreciates her.

Wears his heart on his sleeve. Dogs will get repaid in spades.

How much have we seen from Stocker, Philp, Cottrell Kemp, Honey, Ramsay etc to suggest that we're set for the younger age range?
Personally, I wouldn't consider a soon to be 23yo Weitering to be either a kid or a developing prospect.
With that in mind, I understand where Montagna is coming from as outside of Walsh, our strongest representation of younger footballers are in the 22-23 age bracket where they are expected to now be playing some reasonably consistent footy.
I think he was way off the mark though, we have had a huge amount of first round picks over the previous 5 drafts, plus we have brought in players like Setterfield who were high picks a couple of years before we selected them. The last thing we needed was another 18 year old.

I understand the point you are making and that so far the development of our young mids has been disappointing given the large outlay, but there is a lot of upside still there. We desperately need to start winning games and playing finals now or else we are going to start to have to overpay to retain the talent we have, this is where he is wrong, we needed to improve our starting 22 NOW.

Conversely, he will be very upbeat about his beloved Saints, who made some good trades last year. Really, who in the Saints 22 and under at the start of the year were showing great potential before they started going all in for the now? Gresham (older than Weiters) and Hunter Clark ( and even he was more potential than anything substantial on field). They had a few make very good strides this year (Coffield and King), but before this year there was very little to be excited about in their young brigade.

In short, we need to start winning and the notion that we needed to hold on a while longer and concentrate on more 18 year olds is ridiculous.

Where would Cripps have gone if nobody saw him play in his U18 year?

o
I must be missing something

I am sure the club will secure him on a decent contract without paying overs because of what clubs like North are offering

A talented player, in a club about to play finals, he and his manager would be well aware of what that means
Out of interest how much do you think he is worth, we would be offering and others offering? I think the difference could well be within that $500k range.
I think the landscape has changed abit with some big Vic clubs along with North now having huge cap room and in desperate need of someone like him.
Look at someone like Grundy, Cogs, Martin etc they still have to get paid a million dollars plus to stay at their sides because of what offers other teams make. We may be on the rise but that doesn’t mean we are immune to paying huge contracts to players, it’s more about how much is McKay worth to us? Is he the guy we punt on to become a top level player to the tune of ~$800k if our hand is forced?

JSOS is an interesting one.

Makes me think that he's well and truly in the projected best 22 from the coaches perspective. Had every reason to seek a trade, and if he wasn't in our plans we'd have had an opportunity to cash in a bit. Hopefully all the drama has been brushed off and he lines up R1 on a forward flank. Could see a highly motivated JSOS next year, wanting to prove a point.

BB, I only hope one thing for the CFC next season....I don’t care who is in the best 22 as long as they earn and deserve their spot in that team.
If players are getting a game based on form and output and not reputation we are in for some exciting times
Go Blues

I don't disagree with your viewpoint at all mate.
I just believe that it shouldn't be a surprise though given that more than a couple of our younger guys probably haven't lived up to expectations that some may hold the view that we do need extra reinforcements in this area.
Fingers crossed that Dow, Stocker etc can really start to prove themselves capable senior footballers which will go some way to helping our side taking a leap in a similar manner to the Lions or Saints of recent seasons.

Marchbank doesn't have the size and body work of other undersized defenders

Port just added to their deficiency, Aliir, despite their defenders having better body work
Yep. Can’t hold his ground in one v ones well enough. Can’t ‘plant’ and keep his opponent away from the ball. You see this at training. I still believe he’s a good third tall intercept option. Releasing Plow.

If I were North or Essendon - I would be putting my million dollars towards SoS before players and coaches & I am sure the AFL would bend the rules in North's case. North Melbourne's admin have been underestimated since the early 70s
North have actually done surprisingly well in this trade period especially considering they don’t even have a coach to pitch there future direction.

They have brought in Corr, Stephenson, Lachie Young and Bosevalago and still hold pick 2, 11, 30 & 39 plus a couple of late ones.

With 2 they select Logan McDonald the best young KF in the draft that has already played senior footy in the WAFL for most of this year and done very well, he is a great get and sets them up for the next 12 years, then 11 on a Zac Reid would set them up defensively very nicely.

i just want people who are in the team that try. Too many years of watching guys do the bare minimum effort wise

Think H would be happy to sign for a base of 600+ incentive

This is an interesting topic but I think I'm with McCartney on this.

I know everyone is trying to do best by their club...but at the same time there should be some mutual respect to do a deal both teams can be happy with and is reasonably fair.

Essendon, expectedly, convinced Caldwell but then didn't stump up up and deal went through last minute. We already know their Dunkley offer was very underwhelming, only adding a 2nd rounder to pick 7 late and not taking into account Dogs don't need pick 7...pretty lazy.

And the Crows only offering pick 40 for Hately knowing they could get him in the PSD. I guess you could argue good on them they got him for free and they used their leverage? On the other hand it's quite disrespectful and really abusing the situation since 40 is way under for a pick 14 from only 2 years ago...they could have at least tried to offer a pick in the mid-late 20s.

Curious to know people's thoughts...use your leverage to full advantage to ream the other club or be respectful enough to at least offer something at least a bit more reasonable? This is for normal situations like this, not Collingwood's salary cap issues leading to a fire sale.

I think it needs to go back to preventative measures.

1. Draftees should be signed to 3 year initial deal and or a decreasing scale, trades should only take place if both parties agree

2. Abolish PSD

3 RFA - Acquiring club pays 50% of the compensation, coming off their first live pick

AFL still get their yearly meat market, while having more protective measures
