This was more a case of Ross saving face than changing his mind.
A lot of people here have attributed villain tags to some who don't warrant it.
Football clubs are professional businesses, nobody is going to be hired without an interview process.
Those that think this is the result of a smear campaign are incorrect. There are a lot of questions that the panel would need answering from Ross about how things ended with Fremantle and also St Kilda, a lot of which he wouldn't want to answer.
One of the greatest knocks on our club is that it is run by an old boys club. Sayers is doing his upmost to dismantle this, I think a lot of people on this board don't realize who the actual boys club is.
I wouldn't say it was time to completely give up on the club, quite the opposite.
The voice of reason speaks.

Always enjoy reading your posts.

FMD - can I relate to this!!!!!!!!!!

If Ross doesn’t want to compete for the job, so be it. Maybe that speaks for itself.

The right thing was done in sacking Teague, albeit a few days later than it should’ve happened. He was undoubtedly found wanting.

Now the process is to see who wants the job, then identify the best of that group.
So no need to hit the panic button yet in my view.

Ah screw it. Let's just run a proper process. If it's Adam Kingsley then great. Put some senior heads around him and spend big in the football department. Hell, if Melbourne can do it without a Messiah then we can. See ya Ross.

Absolute bull if Clarko said yes he’d be in a Presser right now dressed in Navy Blue

I disagree completely. Due Diligence is just a fancy term for covering your own arse if it goes **** up because you " followed the process ".

What question marks does he still have around him BTW?
Very strange take for mine.

So you don't look before you cross the road I gather?

Ross was invited to go through the process - presentation, interviews, etc.

He felt as though, if the club wanted him, they shouldn’t be making him go through a process. They approached him, he didn’t apply for it.

My view - inclined to agree with Ross here. You either want him or you don’t. In the same way we approached Clarkson with an offer, if you’re approaching experienced coaches, you’re approaching them with an offer - not an interview request. Debacle.
Maybe Ross doesn't know how to use powerpoint?

Don't worry, I'll teach you! There'll be Comic Sans and wipe-ins all over the place.

Speaking from a general view, but there are many questions/red flags for Ross.
Many people believe that his game plan is outdated and that he is a one trick pony who would try and get us to play the exact game plan without any updates for the past few years. After a few years out of the game, you gotta at least ask him about how he plans to tailor his game plan to our current list.

Secondly is list development. He tends to leave teams in a bit of a mess after his failed finals tilts which as a club who have failed the current rebuild, would be a disaster to have to go through again.

Thirdly, there are red flags behind the cultures he builds at these clubs which lead to the aforementioned messes and when you add in the sexual harassment claims, you gotta make sure this won’t be a problem going forward.

I’m not saying these views are 100% accurate but they are widespread enough amongst enough people that you have to interview him on his thoughts regarding this and whether these are legitimate faults or not.
As a club that has suffered from these mistakes over and over for the last 20 years, there is no room to rush through such a decision when supporters are as fed up as they are.

Based on what?

A lot of people here have attributed villain tags to some who don't warrant it.

We don't really know that yet and may never know...

There are a lot of questions that the panel would need answering from Ross about how things ended with Fremantle and also St Kilda, a lot of which he wouldn't want to answer.

What's this based on? Ross was headhunted by Freo and was lowballed by the St. Kilda board for money/years, he left them. What questions might they be, or is that just more innuendo based around the indiscretion that went public?

I reckon another knock is that there are clashing interests and people playing politics that do not directly lead to wins on the field, not just the 'old boys club'.

To a certain extent i agree with you Forty that there will always as a minimum be some type of discussion to determine fit and ensure alignment of expectations etc for any person coming from externally into a role. When you have someone like Ross who has enough demonstrable experience this seems like the right approach to take which is why changing to a 6 person panel is confusing and doesn't make sense for someone like him or others equally experienced. I have no doubt we would not be putting Cook through a 6 person panel process (if the rumours are true) and think there are times where you need to directly appoint and times were you go out and canvass the market.

My worry is that by choosing to canvas the market we scare away experienced candidates like Ross who feel their reputation speaks for itself and are left with slim pickings to choose from. This is the first time I've been worried that Sayers has made the wrong call and given into media commentary about the importance of a process when a process may yield us a far inferior coach that what's available compared to making a hard and unpopular decision that is what's best for the club. I really hope i'm wrong but that will be determined on who we ended up getting! And thanks for sharing your info too, always appreciate you helping us understand what's going on especially when all of our heads are spinning.

FWIW - I’d be more than happy with Brad Scott and have posted this previously.

He had the NM list seriously over achieving and they fell off a cliff when he left.
I'd still give pretty much anyone 3 years instead of Teague - he was shithouse and causing problems.

FWIW I voted for B Scott, Bucks and Pyke in the new coach thread. So far Bucks is out and I have no clue on the other 2 but looks like they may yet be interested. Will wait and see.

Think it’s Wallsy’s turn. We went Jezza, (Jones), Parkin, Walls, Jezza, Parkin, and then our run of success ended. Coincidence? I think not…
I was too young so I only have 2nd hand info from my mum but she didn't rate Wallsy at all
"I couldve coached that team to a flag. If he was any good he wouldve won 86 as well and we wouldn't have had to bring David back"

Absolute bull if Clarko said yes he’d be in a Presser right now dressed in Navy Blue

But it's not about Clarko. Its about why Lyon 'pulled out'. What has Clarkson got to do with this post?

Can't believe Voss still available at pick 3.
His hands may be tied by virtue of Port still being in contention, but now would be a good time to put his hand up and say "I'm ready".

Brad Scott no certainty for Hocking's old AFL job. Josh Mahoney in the running there too.
Understandable if Scott needed to wait until he knows before putting hat in ring with us.

He is bad in finals, losing more prelims than he won, left Freo under a cloud, sexual harassment allegations which goes to behaviour in the workplace, left St Kilda in the lurch abandoning his old club. Was coach during numerous culture scandals including the schoolgirl fiasco and Ryan Crowley's PED use.

Got into a barfight at Freo just to top it off.

When we sacked Bolton I emailed the Club my resume applying for the HC job. Never did hear back.

Looks like I might be in the running this time though!

I always laugh when people in football talk about Powerpoint as though it make you some kind of genius. FMD...my 5 year old nephew can come up with a good presentation!
The board was certainly impressed when Brendan Bolton did a leadership density PowerPoint presentation. They didn’t realise Bolton was talking about them!
