Bowes is a bit more complicated than media reporting, think GCS want a future first back. Hunter no
I was going to say. Would be a ridiculous move to give up 7 and Bowes without some sort of first coming back. However it wiil probably be a worse first round pick given the salary dump component of the deal

I reckon taking a big cap hit IS worth it if your club is in that position.

All that is to say.... Bowes will be a great deal for some club, just not us. Good player whose current contract is over-priced. Someone who has the cap-space can acquire a proper talent player for way unders in draft capital, then in 2 years re-sign him for a sensible figure reflecting his output.
It's a decent move particularly for a rebuilding team. For example in our rebuild it would've been ideal to take on a contract and get another top 10 pick.

I can see a sticking point being Bowes not wanting to go to bottom team, but it'd be hard for a top 8 team to find that kind of money as easily.

so did stengle

And so have hundreds of players over the years who weren't so lucky as to walk into a club as well run as Geelong are.

Stengle is very much an outlier here. There are lessons to be learned there, but the lesson isn't that everyone with off field issues should be considered.

North would probably benefit trading pick 19 for Bowes and 7, they have the money and the need to get two top 10 kids in at the same time

North don't have pick 19, they traded it to Richmond last year.

ITK’s anything further on Ciaran Byrne??

Would love to see him back on the wing…

It would have been perfect for us. Get a bunch of draft picks and use the salary cap on that rather than over paying to reach the cap floor

I personally think the media read too much into this. Can't see it happening.

(Not ITK, opinion based)

There hasn't been that much media about it tbf. All I've seen is an article or two just saying he said that, not really much commentary aside from that.

I could be wrong but I don't think it was even reported immediately here, it took a few days. I think someone even posted an article from Ireland a day or 2 before anything was written here.

Can someone explain how our cap works .. we paid unders at some stage so we could pay 105% of the cap. Are we still
Doing that or do we have to trim it back to 100% now . Thanks for the reply in advance

It’s a pretty good deal , possibly snaring Busslinger & Hollands/ Clarke or Mackenzie , come draft night
We shed Gov hefty package next year & several other players most definitely, so space created.
Adding Bowes and Acres propel us into say possible top 6 or 8 in 2023 , so is our future p14-12 worth risking for a quality mature player, more than serviceable correct age & best tall defender upcoming draft.
it just a matter of salary restructuring and willingness to let more dead wood go.
My only criticism of Curly Jr son, he’s a little reticent and conservative.

Ache’n for Acres
By Arrested Development
(2022 Remix)

(Verse 1 speech)

Yes, indeedy we are needy
I got the feeling to stretch on out
Our rookies are cryin', our AFLW dyin'

And me I'm relyin' on Bigfooty for clues

If we gotta watch the cap then it ain't all crap
We’re looking to the west and buying some winger

And we’ll be alright if we can rest at night
Knowin' our stars have got IKON to stand on

Ache'n for Acres plenty of Acres
Money spent on half backs ain't working ‘hundred percent

Ain't gettin no Caddy, no Titch, no good ruckman
Until we get some $ for some badly run club, man

No more Blues men crying
instead they'll be laughing
Running free and wild in the heat of the ‘G

Cause once we’re on song we all wanna feel strong
That our club will go on, IKON land and all stayin'

(Verse 2 refrain)

We got a winger to play on - no more ache'n for Acres
No beggin for leftovers - got some stars of our own

IKON grounds to raise on - no more ache'n for Acres

No more giving to takers - got stars to work on

We don't like holding onto 3rd round picks, do we?
We actually might have one this year if the reports about the Jones compo end up being correct.

In his 2 off-seasons he's brought in a big free agent, a medium free agent, and traded out of the first round twice...
But apart from all of that what have the Romans ever done for us............

To a much lesser degree. Don't discount the effect Eddie may have had in bringing back into fold so to speak.

stengle got delisted after multiple drug offences - has hunter had these issues raised publicly at the least? Im not saying hes a great get but people deserve second shots, some arent as bad as it seems etc etc - i dont think we can afford hunter so that should be the defining factor

We can't even handle a different cat like Stocker. Gawd help us having to deal with someone who has deeper issues.
There's tolerance vs output. If their output is higher the tolerance is higher.

Stocker didn't really give us any output so it's easy to bugger him off, but if he was getting 20 touches a game and was the elite kick in the AFL that he could be at VFL level then he'd 100% still be on the list.

Martin's on peanuts now too....

There is a difference between a person who is making the wrong lifestyle choices off-field vs a person with attitude/personality clashes that doesn't align with the group ethos

Would love to see him back on the wing…

If he were to come back, it'd be a long way back. Footy's different than when he left it; there's more running, less rests. And we're hopefully working on being less injury prone than we used to be, and getting a player who spent half his time in rehab back in might not be a step on the road to that.

But Byrne was everything Cuningham is. If you could get him back, get him fighting fit, get him able to play sustainable games, I'd absolutely do it.
I personally think the media read too much into this. Can't see it happening.

Why?

He would not be expensive, at all; think, an international rookie deal with perhaps a little more to go with it. His previous time on ground, top speed, skills and strength for his height were absolutely at AFL level, and he was a long kick; he'd be faster than everyone not named Jordan Boyd or Corey Durdin on our list. With a bit of time away from AFL, it might've given his body time to settle and strengthen, making him less injury prone.

The cost is a list position, and we've already gotten rid of six players. Two-three draftees and Acres gives leaves two or three spots for DFA or rookies. It's plenty plausible.
