I noticed that in the back half of the season Cottrell became a notable goalkicker. Without looking, I think he went at a goal a game for the back half. If we can get another midfielder (Looking at Walsh, LOB, Acres and Kennedy namely) to go at a goal a game + an extra forward outside of JSOS/Fisher to go at a goal a game (Motlop, Durdin, Martin all absolutely capable) then we are a much, much better side.

I'd actually like to see him trialled in a HF role with Acres taking his spot on the wing. Seems a steady set shot, has pace, could easily push up the ground as/if needed and is quite solid overhead.

While wings have been an issue our other pain point is the half forward line.

Cotts running ability means there will be a role he could play most weeks.

Can see value in using him to shut down oppo drive from half back. Can certainly be damaging on the way back too.

That’s his spot, not wing but not in front of Martin or Fisher. Good depth to have though and maybe he develops further.

I'd like him to go up against those two in pre-season for a HF spot. I know stats say Fisher had a good season and Martin can do stuff others may not but I don't think we've found our best half forwards yet.

Maybe they're in the current squad or maybe we need to look outside at some point.

Personally I like Fisher more just off the pack at a stoppage.

think that’s a role we should look to have all our “small forwards” play at different points.

can imagine both Durdin and Martin doing this very well.

I would like to see Martin establish himself as a midfielder/Forward not as a Forward/Mid. I believe his skills would be better utilized in the onball role.
He has the skills but I don’t think his body would stand up to it. He’d also need to get a lot fitter.

I know but he may not need to bulk up but become more resilient like Lappin. Or we could work as a team and our bulls could create room (protect him a little) for him in there.

Yeah, I'd love him in that position. He is a hard runner and reads the play well in transition to attack. A little less proficient in defensive running patterns. Bit of upside in Cottrell yet I reckon.

Is Martin fit enough to play Wing?

He's a guy you want delivering the ball inside 50. Or finding (and hitting) inboard targets.

Has pace and knows how to find space. He's a very strong overhead mark so could be used as a 'down the line' dump kick target from D50 when needed.

Same goes for Saad. Ticks all those boxes. I know SAAd just made the AA team as HBF, but we do have somewhat of a logjam with Saad, Docherty, Williams, Boyd, Newman (and that's after cutting Williamson, Stocker and Newnes).

Am I on crazy pills? EDIT: Don't answer that....

Doesn't have the tank to play a full game but would love to see it in periods. It's something he did a lot at the Suns - rotate from Wing/intercepting HBF/on ball.

Like I said I'd love to see it in periods, reckon he could easily play as a marking/intercepting winger, or as a more attacking version of the same. Wouldn't be a traditional wingers play but it could be a useful wrinkle to utilise every now and then as it would be a mismatch - though wouldn't be something to do for extended periods imo.

I think Saad would kill it on a wing..

One of he or Doc should play wing. With acres on the other side.

Think we are stronger with Saad on the wing and Boyd/Williams on hbf, than we would be having LOB/Cottrell on the wing and Saad off hbf.

Yeah would be interesting to have Saad on a wing with his speed but is his aerial work good enough to Mark down the line kicks? Isn’t that an important skill/feature for wingers?

Also Boyd is quick and goes in but to me he looks a little too light to be effective down back. I wonder how he’d go as a small forward?

Have you looked at your avatar lately?
Also, when was the last time LOB took a contested mark?

Funny I was thinking of Skinny Lappin & Kade Simpson when I considered your post, but I don't think he's the same. Yes he has the same sized frame, but the other two where very agile and 'rangey', elastic men with elastic hammys. I don't think Martin's issue is bulk, more soft tissue. I just don't think his body is up to it.

Would be OK with him pinch hitting though to get him into the game more.

Saad would kill it in a lot of places. At present though, he is far too valuable in the backline, as he is really the only one generating run, breaking lines and hitting up players. When McGovern or someone else has proven themselves stable/dependable in the backline and can take over the line breaker role, then I'd be happy to see Saad trialed on the wing.

Right now, he's far too important down there setting up play to move elsewhere. We would lose too much run.
PS. I think he has a LOT to do with our substantial improvement and ability to win games in the last couple of years.

I agree with this in part. I actually think Docs best position is in the guts as shown in the last few games. Been saying this to mates for years and I liked what I saw when he was thrown in there albeit through necessity. Saad on a wing would be a ripper, as the old saying goes, "mugs to the backline".

Oh, right!

See, I only remember him as - “That Brownlow medallist, Brad Hardie.“ :(
Heh heh. He nearly ran me over one morning in his ancient Merc. I was carting Meat, ran down the ramp with a couple of lambs on me shoulders, he came hurtling round the back of me truck. Both of us stopped just in time. He gave me a little wave and a nod. I thought “Hey, that’s Brad Hardie”. Orange head gave him away.
