Really? If I was just a tourist going down that escalator that's what I'd think. I'd believe it was just telling me the emergency number like any station in the world. I wouldn't be scared by it.

So, taking this through to its logical conclusion....you report a mugging to the national security hotline number....what happens?

We didn't get those fridge magnets to hold up shopping lists you know.

I'd use the first number. The one for police.

Some people do seem to be scared of the signs though so perhaps I was wrong. I just figured it's an emergency number like you see at any major station in the world.

If you called 000 for a mugging, you would be wasting that resource and clogging up valuable emergency services time. Unless, of course there was a serious injury and you were requesting an ambulance.

You're being a little deliberately obtuse here. This is clearly an anti-terrorism initiative, with the aim for you to be "alert but not alarmed". Whatever that is supposed to mean.

Yeah, I edited my post because maybe I was wrong.

So you want a greater Police presence at the stations? For someone who thinks he lives in a Police State I find that a little confusing. Maybe you need some help?

I have no problems with surveillance at large hubs or public transport areas.

This is what the police should be doing.

That does not equate to a police state.

The police state is when we are all policing each other.

I find that a smile opens more doors than it closes, being a rough edged person just makes your world all matte finished. I'd suggest you look at yourself in the mirror but it's all buffed blurry.
And then we all went to the forest and had lashings of ginger beer!

I find pulling the handle opens more doors than a smile. The other ones open when you push on them. While I don't advocate violence, because I know first hand it's usually pretty pointless and I've been lucky enough to never have my head seriously smashed in, the world isn't nice enough to be so soft. You have to stand up for yourself. You can still be a nice person, decent, kind, caring, and compassionate and stand up for yourself or your friends when it comes down to it.

Some of the nicest people in the world get used and abused through their kindness. You don't have to be a callous arseh*le, but a bit of toughness is what you need to survive, get where you want, and enjoy yourself. Being a pussoir and so optimistic and naive is dumb, and to bring your children up in that mindset is setting themselves up for disappointment. Good and strong: the two are not mutually exclusive – which many people fail to understand.

OP is a deadset idiot for doing what he did.

I can recall at least 4 fatal stabbings in and around Box Hill station in my life, and a shooting. One of these murders was a completely "random" attack where an innocent man was knifed in the heart on his way home from work.

The fact you were pushed by someone you describe as a bogan (I assume you mean working class person by this term) should have been a good indicator to get the hell out of there - instead you even thought of the possibility of a knife, and proceeded to engage them physically anyway?

Lucky you didn't get a puncture wound.

Oh and for the record people who stand on the right of escalators are satan

If I'm in the city I'll usually say loudly "move to the left please" as I'm approaching the random dawdler, if they don't notice I put my hand on their arm and tell them "please move to the left, the right is for walking" and its usually fine because they can see most people are following that procedure.

If I'm in the burbs forget about it, people there just don't do the stand to the left thing as much.

The thing that annoys me the most by far on public transport is ****wits crowding around the doors when you are trying to get off the train obviously trying to get on there first to scab a seat.
I get this every day, as I take my bike on the train and ride to and from at each end. Coming in to Perth is always the same. If I can be first off it's not too bad but if I'm not first off then I will be last, by which time all the morons are starting to panic that the train might leave without them or something and starting getting on. I'm not even polite about it any more, I just ram the bike through the middle of them.

Agreed. You need to have some teeth to get by.
Look at this video of this guy allowing himself and his girlfriend to get bullied by a skinny drug addict. He was clearly pissed off and emasculated but had no idea how to handle the situation.

I'm not saying violence is the answer but you can't allow yourself to be treated this way by anyone.

It would be easier to let sleeping dogs lie ... no doubt. But I see great good in fighting back. Not only for society but for the individual on the recieving end.

He's hopefully learn't that he can't walk all over people and get away with (actions have consequences).
Or maybe he went home and took that frustration out on his partner or someone else because you failed to be the bigger man and handle it in a civil manner.
I hate bullies with a passion and wouldn't hesitate to step in if I saw a situation such as the ****wit belting the blind guy and autistic kid on the bus.
But there are ways to prevent the situation happening and your rule book is missing them.
