News Bombers made play for Cloke

Why would we offer Cloke $600,000 a year when he is not worth that much.

Yes because you are likely to entice a player to leave his club by offering him what he is worth/what he is already on  Why would GC offer 1.4 mil for Gary Ablett when he is clearly not worth that much... baffling.

What would you chose, to pay him what he is worth (lets say 450-500k) and have to trade your first rounder + steak knives, or pay him slightly over the odds and get him for free in the draft.
Cloke would easily be worth 600k a year to Essendon if it meant getting him for free in the PSD.

Essendon  Leave it to the big boys in the future, please.

Frankly I'm glad Cloke has the kicking yips otherwise clube would be offering a million a year contract. 23 year old CHF, best mark in the game, powerhouse runner, physical player, puts on forward pressure - he's the only player in the league like that.
He can still kick like crap and we can win the flag, it's just beautiful

Shame that the rumours about Lloyd look like bunk, imagine how good Cloke could be if he had a 60% accuracy rate. That's 50 goals a year. With a Dawes who can take contested markes and a Cloke who can kick straight our side would be unstoppable.

You wouldn't take Pears? Riiight. Just quietly Zaharakis goes well too and will be a gun in the next few years.

We made a play at him but it didn't come off.

I'm sure we're the first club to make an offer to a player based on people's comments on here.

You have to offer more than what a player's worth in this market. It isn't an open market which is properly competitive. The price of a transaction will always exceed market price unless you are in a position of power. On occasion you can offer success and get a better deal but your club can't do that.

FWIW, I agree with you that there's nothing wrong with the fact that you went for him. Why not? I even said that in my post. Are you that paranoid that you can't recognise it when someone agrees with you. Others in this thread have stated that your club didn't go about it in a way that made you a realistic chance to get him. I agree with this thinking but I didn't say that.

On your Pears and Zararakis argument. No I would not want Pears. It's not that I don't think he will be good, I just think Reid is better pretty comfortably. I think Brown is comparable to Pears but he is more developed and already knows the club culture. Presti is still an elite stopping defender and Tarrant is an elite defender full stop. Why would we want Pears? That's not a knock. I wouldn't want Watson either, not because he isn't good, just because we have players who already play his role and who clearly fit into the system already. Zaharakis I'll cop, talented kid and that makes it 6. I don't back down from my call that you have the worst list in the league though both for the now and for the future. There's a lot of pain still to come for the EFC.

cloke is a jet, you should nab lloyd to teach him how to kick then he will be more of a jet...

umad smiddaz?

also clive and kepler suck....big time

Who does Zaharakis replace?? Would play 2's at Collingwood.

Zaha would get some games, Medhurst managed about 10 games this year and he was finished. Most of our 8 or so good kids would get a run here or there at any club.

Name em. You guys will not see a flag for at least 10 years. Worst midfield in the AFL.

If injuries hit he may get a run - still from the Grand Final side which player makes way to get some games? He added little value in a team that finished 3rd last.

Cue we go with the slanging match...
Zaha added little value? Led our goalkicking (yes an indictment etc) half the year, very lively most matches off half-forward, but then tired late in the year and tailed off.
16 touches, a goal and an assist isn't too bad a year in our broken forward line. He's not in any top/best anything yet but he's going OK in what is, clearly, a fairly trying position.

IMHO (I'm sure Pies will disagree thus sparking typical BF slang-fest) better player than Davis and Medhurst this year; and not far behind MacAffer/ Blair and Lockyer who all got games. Basically 2 or 3 from that group played all year.

Would he push in front of all of those guys? No-one can possibly know (definitively). But he'd be going against them , and IMHO hard to split.

I still don't get it.

Cloke has just become a premiership player, and has got the chance to play in a few more flags.......If he helps win another flag or two he can write his own ticket at Collingwood.

I always thought a player plays AFL to reach the pinnacle, playing in a premiership team, why would he want to leave the biggest club in the land, and get a few more meresly dollars and go to a club that may not play finals let alone a premiership.

Cloke is on the cusp of being in a double if not triple premiership side.

THE MONEY COMES ANYWAY ! Now why would you want to leave that ?

He did not finish in the top 10 in your B&F - in a year you finished 14th.

He is not that good and would not add value to the Pies - the small sized players of Beams, Sidebottom, Thomas, Pendles, Didak are miles in front of him. Maybe a battle for the sub spot with Blair.

A mate who knows these things reckons Essendon's "involvement" is 100% fabricated, prolly just D Cloke's negotiation tactics.
Take that as you please.
I'd be surprised if Essendon didn't have a chat to him after what David said, ditto a bunch of other clubs. How interested they were was probably exaggerated though. It was probably nothing more than an enquiry.

Let's play the ball and not the man.

Slattery has a point. Zaharakis is a better player than Medhurst now, and was in 2010. Zaharakis would be a borderline best 22 player for us, and those kind of players tend to get 10ish games a year. Would probably be a regular emergency like Lockyer was for us.

Sounds to me like a late lazy and ill concieved attempt to lure a player away at the eleventh hour. Cloke was never going and even it was, it would have been to a club that had put a bit of time and effort over a matter of months into their recruiting drive.

Essendon need to realise that you dont recruit players by reading the back page of the Herald Sun the week before the draft and finding out who might be available.
