I'm not sold on Bellchambers yet either and Hird hinted at another role for Ryder.

Not entirely opposed to grabbing Gorringe, but do want a midfielder much, much more.

Originally I thought if Gorringe is really good enough then I wouldn't mind drafting him at 8 for the same reasons you list above but then I remember we have Joe Daniher to look forward to in 2012.

Given we already have Bellchambers and Bock in the pipeline (hille, ryder, bellchambers, and bock will be respectively 32, 24, 23, and 22 in 2012 when we draft Joe) I think we can afford a two year development gap.

Worse case scenario we can always trade for a ready made ruckman ala Collingwood, St Kilda or Sydney.

If our recruitment guys think at our pick 8 the best available is Gorringe but the talent gap between him and the next best midfielder is small then I say go for the midfielder. But if they Gorringe is leaps and heads above the next best player i think it would be silly not to take him even if the next best player is a midfielder.

he says he wants gorringe, then possibly other teams are alerted to him, richmond especially who need a ruckman pick him up and we in turn get a midfielder one spot up the rung.

flipside is he falls to us and we take him and everyone is happy/little upset.

personally i think we need him more so than a midfielder. it is not necessarily the midfield talent that is holding us back. it is the set up.

goodwin said it himself in an interview stating that they need to work harder but they can most definitely get there and i agree.

Well the biggest problem with our midfield is the side of it that's 23 or older.
All we really have is Watson, Stanton and Winderlich along with players like Welsh, Prismall, McVeigh, Lovett-Murray.

I'm fairly happy with the younger ones, although Myers and Jetta really need to start living up to their potential.

Have you got a source for that interview?? Ive been really keen to hear something from goodwin but havent heard anything. Im interested in hearing some of his thoughts on his tough job ahead.

With Laycock and now Bock being delisted it seems that we are definately in the market for a new young ruckman... interesting to see if the recruiting staff decide on Gorringe at #8 or Lycett/Hickey at #30...

Id still prefer and mid (Atley, Smith, Polec...) at #8 if possible!!

It makes Gorringe at 8 more likely. Not too many would want into a season with only 3 rucks. There's a massive difference IMO in the talent levels of Gorringe and Lycett. Gorringe is a 21st century ruck, whereas Lycett is more of an old-fashioned type. We BADLY need a class mid but we also need to draft Hille's replacement. If only we had two top 10 picks.

EDIT: It would be good if we could get Gorringe at 8 and Prestia at 30. That would get us the best ruck in the draft and a mid that would instantly improve our 22.

I think we are better off going with Gorringe at 8 now and hoping a midfielder slips through to 30. I think their is more chance of a good midfielder slipping through to pick 30 rather than a ruck. From watching the vision of Lycett he looks very impressive in his highlights, cant seem to put to much between him and Gorringe, so i dare say he would be well and truly gone before pick 30. Unsure who the next best rucks are in the comp, but i just feel that we have more chance of a Young, Parker, Prestia, Conca, Cripps being available at our 2nd pick.

There is no way a club will go into the season with just 3 rucks on the list IMO.

Want Smith at 8. If worst comes to worst, we can draft Stephenson or Robbie Campbell at 47 or in the PSD/RD. Gorringe will probably go to Richmond anyway

Jonathan Giles might also be an option with our pick 47. Dropped off Port's list last year and had a very good year in the SANFL by all reports. Still young (22) and probably about to hit his straps. He was very skinny when he was first recruited and has taken a while to fill out and find his feet.

I'm not going to pretend I follow the potential draftees but unless Gorringe is a class above any mid available I reckon we'd be nuts not to pick a mid, it's still our greatest need and even if the young guys already on the list like Myers, Jetta, Melksham and Colyer develop into consistent, quality players it would still be the way to go because with modern footy you need so many guys who can run through the guts.
