Bombers !!!!! Where are they heading?

Apart from Hille and McVeigh and possibly Lovett, it remains to be seen whether the rest of that mid aged group named above are any better than average.

Ah right, so now we move from there not being any or enuogh, to a lack of quality.

And why do they have to be better than average?
If we have three that are better than average (although Watson and Davey are better than that) and the rest are stock standard, average footballers doesn't that provide a balance?

You don't have to be a star to be able to perform your role, ala Welsh, McPhee, NLM (or in familiar terms O'Bree, Lockyer, Maxwell).

I expect another answered series of questions, it has been quite a trend in this thread.

You're being ridiculous now. I can hardly argue about numbers, you have what you have. I never said you dont have mid aged players, that would be stupid to suggest otherwise.

The argument is about quality. When your older players move on, are your remaining players who are mid aged now, good enough for a smooth transition? Thats a question we can disagree on. You think they are, I'm not so sure. But dont go sidetracking and misinterpreting my comments. Its quite a simple comment that you dont have to agree with. Apart from a couple of exceptions, I dont really rate your mid aged group.

Teams with better lists then Essendon (for 2009)
Adelaide
Brisbane
Carlton
Collingwood
Fremantle
Geelong
Hawthorn
Kangaroos
Port Adelaide
Richmond
St.Kilda
Sydney
Western Bulldogs

And possibly the West Coast Eagles (if they draft wisely) ...

Looking at the ledger, it's nigh on impossible to see how the bombers can possibly make the finals next year ...
They have been treading 'water' the last few years, and just comparing the lists with the rest of the competition, esp for next year, the Bombers haven't got the talent to seriously contend for the 8 next year (or 2010 for that matter)

haha man seriously you have 0 football knowledge. go and form an opinion on a different sport cause no-one cares..

1. essendon have had probably equal with melbourne as west coast as the worst run with injury of any team this year.. at the start of the year everyone deemed scott lucas as essendons most vital player, he has barely played a game this year considering the games hedid play he was dominated. our second most valuable player in mcveigh has had hamstring troubles all year, not to mention the other 6 players who have had season ending injuries

2. we along with melbourne and west coast have played arguably the most young kids int he competition this year..

we will probably finish around 11-10th..
with scott lucas coming back into the team next year mark mcveigh and a host of other players, in addition to the huge amount of experience players like lonergan reimers jetta etc had you cant see room for improvement?

if you cant you are blind

If WC draft wisely??? WTF? How do first year players dramatically improve a list the following season?

Port has a better list than us - but why did they finish below us. Most woudl say Freos list is better than alot of teams yet they are bottom four.

Performance and improvement are the only two things you cna go by. Given Judd and Fevola can't get any better, I would say your mob won't be going far unless you learn how to hit a targte going inside fwd 50.

Essendon will be better next year, but again injuries will tell the tale. A good run and it will be funny to watch the posts on BF next season.

It would seem you care. That's good, you have the passion but you obvisouly care about his opinion or you wouldn't have tried to defend your team

Watson and Welsh have both been clearly above average in the second half of the year. Both provide hardness, ball winning ability and leadership to a young midfield. Without their leadership do you think that we would have been able to pull away from Collingwood, Carlton and Brisbane after being challenged?

How much for the jousting sticks?

Tell him he's dreaming.

It's easy to talk up any team's youth and potential. It's easy to talk down many teams based on perceptions of the age of their list and the size of their 'premiership window'.

From a great distance, where it's tough to keep up with week to week developments, I've been encouraged by some of the signs shown by my Bombers this year. Whether that translates into success in the next few years is pretty hard to gauge.

3 teams are flying this year. 6 or so others are hopeful and the rest are looking for improvement and possible success in the near future. Recent history tells us that 2-3 years can offer a big turnaround in the fortunes of any team.

There's been a lot of names thrown up in this thread - Ryder, Houli, Reimers, Hislop, Lonergan, Myers, Pears. Time will tell. I like the look of them, but I'm also aware that 15 other clubs are blooding young kids that they all think will be good. What's going to be telling is whether Essendon's improvement is competitive against the improvement of the teams around us.

For what it's worth, I think we've shown enough in the last couple of years to suggest we probably won't be in the bottom bracket of teams for much longer. But really, it's all just hope. Time will tell. A lot of the whole 'my team's better than your team' stuff is getting pretty old at this point.

Well said, you never know what's around the corner. However, I think that if Matthew thinks that the Dons are a chance in the next 2-3 years then he'll probably be around, after that he'll be gone. Having said that, the Cats will be strong for a few years to come, the Hawks are on the rise, Carlton have shown that they are going to have a talented lineup, the Roos continue to push, and the swans are always there abouts.

Personally I don't see the dons up amongst those teams in the next 2 years despite their success this year. They are on the right track though, and nothing is out of the question should things go their way.

Each KP is filled by an old fella bar CHB, where they have a very good player in Ryder.

If Gumby cant get fit I think they'll really struggle to have an impact next year and in the years coming.

Pears

Hooker

Ryder

Lloyd

Neagle

Yet still beat the premiers.

Oh, and no Gumby either.

You = Fail!

The bombers are headed no ware. They have done themselves no favors by winning recently. They'll miss out on priority picks again and will be in the same position next year.

The best part about all of this is that it's the same old guys getting the job done for the bombers. Lloyd, Lucas, Fletcher and more recently Damien Pevrill. 'Oh what a champion Lloyd is!" pffft, in 2 years time his performances will actually be the downfall.

It's fantastic to watch:thumbsu:

Hope you enjoyed tonight.:D

Essendon will still struggle against a team such as Sydney who can slow the game down and kill the ball. That goes against Essendon's style of play.

Where you not watching tonight?

Did you not see how many repeat stoppages there were? We actually forced Hawthorn into a Sydney style of game.

That is one thing I did notice at the game - the defensive pressure, not just at the stoppage itself, but in the twenty metres around it. Essendon players making sure they had touch on their opponents. There were simply no easy take aways for the Hawks.

If only we'd been as attentive to the Bombers players - so many effective clearances. We were smashed inside tonight.
