Yet another example why the Rising Star is the most overrated, flawed, pointless award

Amazing how the very best young footballers don't win the bloody thing.

Bontempelli as good as did nothing for the whole first half of last season. He had a few pretty unremarkable games before the break-out performance in Round 13. Not sure why so many discount that fact.

The scouts for the Bulldogs must have a bloody good eye for talent. I bet there is a lot of back-patting going on in their camp today

Supposedly other recruiters didn't rate him in the top 10. They thought he didn't have the skills and would grow too tall without having the frame to compete as a KPP

Yeah, but the Rising Star qualification rules suck. Why can't he sill be eligible to win it this season?

All the very best kids play a few games when they're 18 and then start dominating when they're 19 or 20, by which time they're no longer eligible.
Meanwhile, lesser talents who didn't get a game when they were 18, step up and take the award when they're 19 or 20.

The best young footballers don't win it. Pointless.

Bontempelli, Cameron, Buddy, Judd… many others...

Well, he did play 16 games last year. That's more than "a few". His problem was that he didn't get a game early, and then took too long to get going once he did.

They should just copy the English premier league and have an award for "best young footballer" and make it open for all players under the age of…. 20? 21?

Games played should not enter the equation.

As opposed to Lewis Taylor's entirely unremarkable year? Most ppl didn't know who he was, except David King.

Calling it now. Never seen a guy his size doing it everywhere on the field since Kouta. Get on the Bont for Brownlow. Six votes in two games so far.
Chucked a sneaky $5 at $501 before the season, feeling slightly good about this...

Reckon he still has another level in him even as soon as this year to be honest, he's something else.

16 games and still better than anyone at collingwood

Damon is just jealous mate

Talking about how he should've gone higher doesn't make much sense. At the time of the draft, it was mainly just the Dogs and Pies that were interested in using top 10 picks on him, a project player that people thought would take a little time but had a high ceiling. Hindsight is an amazing thing, but without the knowledge we have now, shouldn't of gone higher in the draft, that's just hindsight talking.

Will be an absolute star, very exciting player to watch right now. Scary prospect with his height and skills.
