Bit sad one of the class acts of the league reaching such an incredible milestone and plenty of miserable people who've almost certainly achieved very little in their lives trivialized the moment.
Stay classy people 👍

Hopefully Pendlebury makes it to 400 games on merit and isn't nursed to the milestone like Burgoyne was.
It would also prove Boomer wrong.

Given that he was one of the best on ground in the last quarter of the Grand Final, and that he only needs 17 more games to get to 400, you’d think he’d have a reasonable chance of getting there on merit.

Hope so because Burgoyne getting nursed to 400 cheapened the milestone.
The end can come quickly at that age though, remember when Richo almost won the Brownlow in 2008 yet by 2009 he was well and truly cooked.

Nursed him so much he played 18 games in his final season and finished on 407 games.

If you want nursed, Sam Newman was on the bench for 3 years to get him to 300.

Harsh to say that...

Mind you Clarkson wanted Silk Burgoyne to hit the 400 game mark.

Not gonna verbally Bash Shaun Silky Burgoyne on here.

When the hawks traded him in, he did recover from a knee injury didnt he?

Before his final year in 2021, Shaun Burgoyne was on 390 AFL games.

Yeah he played 13 games in a Corona Virus ridden 2020 season. Clarkson wanted him to get those last 10 games, it would of been criminal if he didnt reach 400 AFL games after all the consistent footy he played at Both Port and Hawks.

Yes the hawks were rebuilding in 2021, but Hawks at worst were gonna play him from the bench to make sure he hit 400 AFL games.

Suprisingly, I dont Recall an NRL player Playing 400 games, A couple would of played 350. The reason I bring this up was the teams play 24 games each then finals. In VFL/AFL history, the early years was a 14 round season, then 18 then eventually 22. Would like to see the AFL increase to 24 rounds, gives players a chance to crack the 400 games, Peter Carey played 447 games for Glenelg, Russell Ebert played 392 games in the SANFL, which makes their records more remarkable as they both played in an era where the SANFL was at its most violent.
Half way there....

Gather round makes sides play 23 games in the regular season. Hoping it goes up to 24 or possibly even 26 games.

Fletcher was nursed to 400 games too and Newman was before my time.

Burgoyne was being used as medical sub.

3 out of 5 400 gamers finished their career past 2000. 24 player got to 350 games with 16 of those finishing past 2000. 8 from the next 10 on the all time games list as well. 400 is a rare feat ut it looks more like top players career length is on the rise.

I hear you but looking at current players I'm not seeing an obvious 400 gamer after Pendlebury.

Boak - 360
Hawkins - 359
Goldstein - 328
Dangerfield - 327
Sidebottom - 323
Ward - 305
Dusty - 301
Darling - 292
Breust - 290
Duncan -287
Shiels, Tuohy - 281
Gaff - 278
Walker - 272
Zorko - 265
Blicavs, Neale - 260

Dangerfield could possibly get there but given the Geelong transition and injury concerns it is unlikely.
Neale would need 7 seasons. He is 31.
Bontempelli is "only" 28 and has played 231 games.

It's actually the other way around, I see players playing more & longer with the better care we have today,
we are seeing a lot more 300 gamers than what we saw back in the day.

Extra H&A and finals games per year now. Over a 15-16 year career its the difference between 375 games and 400 games

Final 4 system at the start of Tuck/Bartlett era, a side could win the flag playing 24 games. Now its 26.

Merrett is a long way off but a chance based on the fact he barely ever misses games.

He’s 28 and has played 221 games.

Wants to play til he’s 38, you don’t get a say in getting injured however! He is very driven and prepares very well so will be some chance. He’s also the right profile, key position players get bashed around too much in contests.

To get to 400+ games you really need to be best-22 from age 18/19, and have significant longevity.

Players of the archetype like Nick Daicos and Harry Sheezel are genuine chances if they can stay healthy.

But it's still incredibly difficult.

There were plenty of pundits in 2015 and 2016 saying the same thing. It was always silly.

We’ve been seeing more and more players reach 300. Even ones who in the past would not get close.

It is a matter of probability you would then see more 400-gamers.

Boomer's point was that footy in the 90s and 2000s was a 2-3 day a week gig. Now you have ultra-professionals like Petracca and Sheezel who take their pre-game prep very seriously, and players are at the club 5-6 days a week - and he expects players will burn out before 400 games.

Teams used to have only 1-2 guys like this (e.g. Boomer), where now it's the standard.

Who knows if it'll turn out to be true, but I think it's a decent point.
