Im not quite sure where the cats so called depth is because the players i saw today aren't that good. They were outplayed after qtr time easily. Should have won by 10 goals had we kicked straight. Watching the game i was thinking that we have more potential by a mile in our list than geelong has. With the amount of game time our kids got in the hawthorn side this yr Box Hill will be very hard to beat next yr. Very exciting times ahead i think for both hawthorn and box hill.

Carl Peterson, Andrew Renton, Phil Smith and Ben Smithwick were the named interchange players who did not play. After an inaccurate and slow start, BH kicked 17.13 to 9.6 after quarter time. The win was set up by Tim Walsh in the ruck and our hard running midfielders Sam Iles, Ed Curnow, Joel Cross, Lachie George and Brad Neil shut down their opponents and gave us first effective use of the ball. Lachlan McQueen-Misgamble restricted Podsiadly to one goal after quarter time and Lucas Markovic was again rock solid in defence. Adam Yze played a creative game, Sam Gibson applied very good forward pressure, Marco Bello was calm and steady in defence, Cam Pedersen was super competitive with some strong marking and Ben Fagan had a good third quarter when he marked strongly and kicked a long goal.
It was a very good win considering Geelong had 17 AFL listed players to our 10. I think the difference between the teams was the strong performance of our VFL listed players.
My brief thoughts of the HFC listed players follow:
Mark Williams - Played a good team game. He stood up when the heat was on in the first half. His class, composure and decision making helped us settle down after Geelong kicked the opening 4 goals. He used his body well to break clear and hold up play.
Beau Muston - Helped nullify Geelong's tall forwards. Had some good thumping kicks but at times his decision making in close needed to improve.
Jarryd Morton - Presented strongly and took some good marks but did not always use the ball well. Followed up a strong contested mark on a lead with a 60 metre team lifting goal.
Shane Savage - Struggled to get into the game. He is a very good young player so I expect a big game from him next week.
Tim Walsh - Played a great game. He competed well in the ruck and his strong tackling and blocking were a feature. He read the play well and took some strong marks. His hand ball in close was good.
Matt Suckling - Good defensively and another sensational kicking exhibition. He lacks pace but reads the game well.
Riley Milne - He was good defensively against taller opponents and generally used the ball well to advantage. A couple of times he over used hand ball and missed targets by foot.
Hayden Kiel - Good defensively, read the game well and found space through the centre corridor on a number of occasions. Remained composed under pressure.
Luke Bruest - Had a quite first half probably as a result of the heavy knock he copped last week. He worked hard in the second half with some strong tackles and clean disposals.
Jordan Lisle - Presented well and took some strong marks. Played in front and provided a good target. Applied good defensive pressure to keep the ball in the forward line. His kicking for goal let him down.

Next Sunday the firsts and reserves are playing at TEAC Oval. The firsts play Port Melbourne at 1.10pm and the exciting reserves team who finished the season with an amazing percentage of 185.62 play North Ballarat at 10.20am.
I will try to answer some of the questions raised in other posts:
Rusty, Cam Pedersen is 194 cms and I was sitting in the high fire risk stand.
Brendan Bolton is aged in his early 30s and is a very good coach and communicator.
I expect Liam Shiels and Ryan Schoenmakers will play next week and hopefully Steve Kenna will return from injury. It appears the season is over for Josh Kennedy who was at the game on crutches, Will Sierakowski who had his arm in a sling and I understand Travis Tuck has a season ending injury. Stuart Dew qualified but has retired and Carl Peterson should be fit to play three quarters in the reserves next week.

Time for my beauty sleep ... alas a lost cause! :D

Great write up as usual HH.

Thought that Kiel was pretty impressive from what I saw on TV. Agree with the comment that he was composed under pressure. That characteristic might take him a step forward. He has certainly had a good 2nd half to the season.

Thought Milne made some errors but you can just see that he knows where the ball is going and can pluck it from contested situations with his long arms. He is a good work in progress.

Pederson is one of those blokes who is in the right spot at the right time all game. Other than wearing teflon gloves at one stage in the forward pocket and missing an early one that didn't stick, he was excellent and used it well. He is a great link man (ala Birchall) in the midfield but also attracts the ball in the corridor as a forward.

Bruest def looked sore.

Muston struggled with his disposal and decision making.

Lisle was the most impressive that I have seen him. He had a really good presence about him up forward which was great to see.

Very exciting to hear Schoey and Shiels may line up this week.

Re: Box Hill defeat Geelong by 34 Points! 1st Final

Pederson was interviewed after the game by Phil Cleary. Pederson mentioned new coach new game plan. He got that right.

Got to say the tackling was a feature. Example: 4th Q. Geelong kick out from our goals, decides to play on, handballs to Tom Gillies. Immediately caught by Lisle and then Breust. Breust gets the free and the resultant goal. Fierce tackling all day by Box Hill.

Then not long after Pederson stops the Geelong run with a big tackle, ball goes free, to Geelong who kick to Pods I think and then M&M lays a big tackle stopping any play. Excellent, excellent work.

We could do a lot worse than drafting Pederson. Has a never say never die attitude. About 188cm or so but plays tall.
194cm and 90kg needs another 5 or so kg, but very competent.:thumbsu:

I note with interest that he has been invited to state screening which means at least 3 clubs are look'n at him.
