Free Agency Brad Crouch [joins St Kilda as a RFA for pick 23]

Tim Watson is so clueless on everything, quite a number of ex players are.

There is no correlation between what you are offering in a contract and the trade deal. Exhibit A is what the Bombers paid Stringer and what they gave for him, Saad is very similar. Carlton should be going no further than late first/early second. Jones went from Swans to Saints last year for pick 35 and he's much younger than Saad I'm sure ?

Both the Saad and the Daniher trades are going to be such an interesting watch with Dodo wanting to "win" trade week yet again.

But back onto Brad Crouch and our almost certain pick 2 ;)

If today's whispers are true surely the Crows giving Crouch a games penalty (which he won't have to serve if he leaves) is the final straw for him staying at the Crows. They are pushing him out and I can't see them matching the end of first round compo now.

This happens every year. Kinda like Barrett saying that Crouch last year was only worth a second round pick even when he was our b&f and in contract, Meanwhile Papley was worth a high first rounder.
They same flogs were saying Gibbs was worth two firsts when we wanted to get him.

Crouch is worth a first rounder. He is worth more than Saad and Williams as well.
If the compo is band 2, the club has to match and demand a first rounder.
To accept a second rounder is just inept.

What if there isn't a first rounder on offer?

Bridges have been burnt.

I agree with you.
I think the Crows have screwed up how they have handled Brad. He deserved better from the club.
He isn't happy with how the club has handled it, but he could still stay.
He is worth more to the Crows than a second round pick, and you would hope the club tried to mend the bridge with him than lose him for unders.
But clubs arnt dumb. If Geelong want him, and don't want to lose a first round pick, they will package up his contract in a way to make sure we get the compo pick we want.
If we finished top 4, and got band one giving us pick 14 or 16 for him no one would be jumping up and down. The fact we finished last giving us pick 2 as a band 1 is what people are spewing about. But that's the rules. If his contract is worth 700k for a number of years, it's band 1.

If Brad tells the bidding club that he is leaving the Crows regardless then the matching threat becomes quite hollow.

I can't see a club doing a trade in that scenario.

They will just say to the Crows you get end of first compo or you get nothing and the upper hand in negotiations is reversed.

The Crows will effectively end up in the same situation Port were with Nick Stevens.

It could be the first real test of the free agent matching system.

That article supports my post. As per the article you posted, band 1 compo requires the player to be in the top 5% of players 26 and over. Band 2 (end of first round pick) is top 6% - 15%. Top 5% of players 26 and over roughly equates to having to be a top 20 player in terms of salary.
Na - Mate 5% is the Top 36 players on wage only, that put band 1 into the 700k to 750K base on reported Wage on contract over 3 years, add the 10 age bonus points and 700k to 750K become a realistic Band 1

If he was leaving then why bother?

Same whispers said Wines leaving too, probably play 2nd fiddle.to Brad. Player managers rate him as a late 1st value

The value of a key forward is purely supply and demand. There are 18 clubs and like maybe 5 or 6 great key forwards. Many of them are only great for a few years between age 26 and 30.

Almost every club has a ball winning accumulator.
Brown, Daniher, Cameron, McCartyh, Gunston, Wright all being pushed out of their clubs. I think KPFs are going cheap this year.

Who are the mids on the table? Brad, Higgins

Well Daniher and Cameron aren't being pushed out to begin with, their clubss are desperate to keep them. McCarthy should have been delisted years ago. Brown i wouldn't say fits the mould of the dominant kpf that clubs are chasing but should still find a decent contract.

The problem with comparing that to the list of mids is that no one seems to be seriously chasing any. It's like three circles on a venn diagram: "gap in on contested ball winners", "has significant cap space", " serious shot at success". There's just no clubs at the centre of those three I think.

They were saying the same thing about Danger. No way would Geelong do a trade when he was a FA.
If a team wants him as a FA, but also know we won't accept a Second round pick for him, they have two options.
Structure a contract that allows a band 1 compo pick.
They offer him a three year deal on 800k a year. Once he has signed the contract, they extend it by a further year for 300k, giving him a 4 year deal worth 650k per year.
Nothing illegal about that.
Or, they can expect us to match and then trade for him like every other player. If they don't have a first this year, we will take their first next year.

If Daniher gets band 1 then so should Crouch but in all honesty neither are worth even close to band 1. I just hope the VFL are consistent instead of playing Favourites
You are confusing the band with where the team placed.
If the Crows finished 4th, and got a band 1 compo, resulting in pick 15 for Brad, everyone here would be saying that's about fair.
So he would be worth band 1 if we finished 4th.
So then he is worth band 1..The issue is we finished last, not that he isn't worth band 1.
Frawley wasn't worth pick 2 either, but that's what Melbourne got for him, because they finished last.
Buddy was worth pick 2, but only got pick 19 because Hawthorn won the flag that year.
The idea is that a club that is on the bottom of the ladder deserves more of a compensation for losing one of their best players than the team that wins the flag.
If you finished 4th a couple of years ago, you would have got pick 15 for Lynch, but you finished last, so.you got pick 2.
We finished last, and according to the AFL rules, we deserve a higher pick for losing one of our best players because we were the worst team.
I think some people here are thinking us finishing last was an aberration, and not a true indication of what our list is like, and so they don't want to see us get pick 2.
It didn't stop Essendon getting pick one after having their entire team banned for a year.

i’d find that pretty hard to believe. by the time next season is up and running the drug scandal will be old news - especially if nothing more comes out of it.
