Ok, Professor. Maybe he should've remained silent. Maybe I should've kept my uneducated fingers from typing. Maybe, you should support a young Man trying to make a difference. Stop picking holes, stop the patronizing critiques...

Once he puts an article in a major newspaper he opens himself up to critique, and the whole point of these type of internet forums is discussion and debate - people don't need to agree with one another, just respect a diversity of viewpoints.

He makes some very problematic assumptions that he fails to properly justify, yet when people question his arguments and approach (as I and a couple of others on this board have done) the result is overly defensive.

I'm not questioning his motives or his right to express his opinions, I'm just saying that I don't think he should be congratulated for providing a gross over-simplification of a complex issue. But let's be honest, if Fairfax had run an article written by an expert on violence prevention instead of by a footballer we wouldn't be discussing it now, so at least it's got people talking. Good on him for that.

I think the trend of "coward punches" is due to the fact kids don't seem to have the time for a real fight. One punch is about all the time they can spare before they need to text/tweet/instagram about it to their friends, or they'll start to get withdrawal.

perhaps a gross over simplification, is what this issue needs. Not over thinking mambo-jumbo.

declining influence of the family in moral education + violence in the media = coward punches outside bars

That enough of an over-simplification?

I'm old enough to remember a time when a fight was a fight, and then you shared a beer. This coward punch culture is a different thing

I am and I don't think anything has changed at all, if anything its better these days just more media/social media coverage so it seems worse. The stomping bit is a disgrace though always will be and Im sure that specific subject would have be talked about in the Jack household especially after the NRL star getting two years for it the other day.

decline in time for families via the need for time spent at work+ violence on news(even thought the crime rate is going down)

yeah Baja, the stomping thing, and packs on, is what has me stumped. The coward punch is the same. Don't get it.

pfft, eloquent he would have said 'hello friend' not 'hi mate'.. admit it you just made the 'well spoken' bit up.

Fine you got me. In fact I don't even think I met Brandon Jack, just some bloke on the street who wanted to write on my guernsey. :(

I blame thugs like Campbell Brown and Chris Judd for the street violence epidemic

Personally I believe it is more Tippett and Buddy that are to blame here.

I read the piece and while I don't agree with everything he wrote (it's an opinion piece, after all!) I think he makes some very valid points, and I'm all for anything that raises our awareness of the importance of an ethical education. Things like ethics and morals are there to guide our behaviour and to provide an example of how we should conduct ourselves. Without morals, society cannot function.

I agree with the general drive of the article. I like "coward punch" as a better description than "king hit". My feeling is that there is a rise in cowardice and anonymous bullying in Australia. And parents are as bad as the kids.
