The second-year coach has been able to largely sidestep rumblings over Brendan Fevola, with still no official club reaction to the controversial recruit's latest misdemeanour. Lions fan forums have voiced their concerns about everything from how Fevola affected club to his heavily back-ended contract's influence on the club's future plans.
But asked about Fevola on Monday, Voss only offered: "All I can say is there is certainly a lot of discussion about him, that's for sure - some warranted and some clearly unfair.
Have just finished reading an article in todays H/S about the final of Dancing with the Stars tonight...it quoted Alex as saying she was in Melbourne for good and not going anywhere..
Hope Fev joins her..
"No doubt he's had a really tough time. His wife and his kids, who are an absolute lifeline to him and who he relies on so much for support, went back to Melbourne, which was well publicised. Unfortunately that affected him a little bit. And that affected the way he behaved around the club, and that was something he's got to deal with and improve his support network.
"But we had no problems with him. I think he's misunderstood in a lot of ways. There's a lot of good in Brendan Fevola. He's probably one of the most generous people I've met in footy. He definitely gives a lot to the group. But at times what we need him to do is set the right example by playing good footy and getting his body right to play good footy and preparing himself to play good footy. That's what we need and expect of him next year."
I wouldn't have recruited as many mature age players. Is Brendan Fevola any better than Barry Hall?
My sister spotted Fev at Friday's last night having some drinks at about 1am. She said people were surrounding him left, right and centre. Seems like he is enjoying himself!
Haha, obviously not everyone in Brisbane hates him. Go Fev!!had a couple of mates at the RE last night, spotted Fev, they said he was getting photos with many girls who were basically "dry humping" him.. on ya fev!
TIME for Brendan Fevola to think about someone else apart from himself. Time for the Fev to take a pay cut to ensure Simon Black and Luke Power remain at Brisbane. What kind of football world do we live in when Fevola is given crazy wages to play up north, yet the club's stalwarts are forced to take pay cuts?
Fevola's three-year deal is hugely back-ended, so much so that he is believed to be earning about $1.5 million combined in the next two seasons. Carlton paid some of his salary this year and will next season too - believed to be about $100,000 a year.
The Courier-Mail can reveal a member of the public has lodged a formal complaint with the Lions following Fevola's alleged behaviour at an AFL family day in Brisbane over the weekend.
If found guilty, the controversial Fevola is almost certain to have his $700,000-a-season deal torn up by the Lions. It is understood Queensland police and the AFL have been notified of the alleged incident.
The Brisbane Lions will be putting out a statement in relation to Fevola this afternoon. The 29-year-old Fevola met with Lions powerbrokers this morning to tell his side of the story.
Fevola is believed to have exposed himself to a woman at the family day. Club chiefs apparently called Fevola in to hear his side of the story this morning, wary because he has been the subject of previous unfounded allegations.
A source has told the Herald Sun the star will be questioned by two AFL investigators over allegations of a lewd incident outside a hotel in Wynnum, on the coast east of Brisbane.
The source said the woman, a Lions fan aged in her 30s, had been speaking to the forward in the hotel.
She was then asked out to Fevola's car where the incident occurred, the source claimed.
The Brisbane Lions AFC today suspended forward Brendan Fevola indefinitely pending an investigation by the AFL.
Lions Chief Executive Michael Bowers said a man had rung the Club to complain about Fevola's inappropriate behaviour towards his wife when the couple and two of their four children were at a non-Club function where Fevola and several other Lions players were in attendance.
Mr Bowers said the Club spoke with the man and then immediately alerted the AFL who began an investigation into the incident. After speaking with AFL investigators the family also approached Queensland police.
Barrett told Triple M’s Rush Hour on Wednesday that this rhetoric pointed to the two-time Coleman Medalist being sacked by the Lions just one year into his three-year contract.
“It’s not the (usual) response you get from a club official as a rule when they’re out there publicly talking about an infringement by their player,” Barrett said.
“Normally you’re given the line (that) there’s two sides to every story and (you’re) innocent until proven guilty so I think join the dots on this one and that’s it.”
"This club will be taking action. This is more than just a football matter for this club," Johnson said today. At press conference at AFL House in Melbourne late this afternoon, AFL Operations Manager Adrian Anderson read a brief statement, stating the league's concern at the allegations.
"The AFL doesn’t tolerate and won’t tolerate inappropriate or indecent behaviour toward women. We are extremely concerned by this matter and take the complaint that has been made very seriously."
Anderson said the AFL had spoken to all parties involved and did not want to "cut across" the police investigation.
"We will be liaising with (Queensland police) concerning the manner in which we conduct our investigation."
Is there a dumber athlete in Australian sport at present than Brisbane Lions spearhead Brendan Fevola?
The latest allegations involving Fevola and his behaviour at a non-club function are obviously still being investigated and just like everyone else he deserves to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. But if there is any truth to claims that he misbehaved at the said function - which was attended by other Lions - and that he did in fact expose himself in front of a couple and two of their four children, then the Lions have no choice but to cut him loose.
There were even rumours that he and skipper Jonathan Brown had come to blows at a barbeque at Brown's house because Fevola had offended a team-mate's partner.
Fevola’s manager, Peter Blucher, said in the statement that he was yet to be made aware of the details of the complaint and urged the public not to prejudge his client.
“Brendan will cooperate fully with any investigation that is determined to be necessary by Queensland Police or the AFL. “He categorically denies any inappropriate behaviour in relation to the alleged incident. We encourage people not to prejudge this matter until it has been finally resolved and to respect Brendan’s privacy in the meantime.”
Former Carlton coach Denis Pagan, who worked hard during almost five years in charge of the Blues in trying to keep Fevola in line, was disappointed to hear of the latest allegations. “It's very unfortunate. I feel for everyone concerned,” he said.
“I don't know the facts but there are no winners in an incident like this.''
It is believed Fevola and two other Lions players were at a non-club charity function before the alleged incident took place. It is believed there was no alcohol at the event. Mr Bowers said there was no suggestion that the other players who were at the function had been involved in or had witnessed the alleged incident.
At a press conference, he refused to be drawn on whether the club regretted taking Fevola after he was dumped by Carlton.
