We lost a pretty good player in last years trade but we didnt know it at the time - Frarren Ray.

Hasn't missed a beat at the Saints.

playing for saint kilda will make most players look good. although farren has improved a little bit, it's more about who he plays for and the fact he gets a game every week. he also fits right into the saint kilda team, whereas we already have a few of the same type players as farren.

Question? Do you think Blake will stay if aka is supposedly taking a 200,000 dollar paycut, if that is the case i cant imagine what they are offering blake. Mayb it beneficial for him to leave thoughts?

What the hell are you talking about? His name is Lake, I've got no idea who you're talking about.

Yea, and I heard the Saints are sniffing around Jordon McMahon as well, another top 10 draft pick by the Dogs.
Still you can't complain when you look at some of the players that have left the Saints and gone onto have fantastic careers elsewhere - Plugger, Hall, Wakelin brothers. And we did get the best years from Nicky Winmar... Ha:cool:

Lake will stay. If he was 7 years younger it would be a very different story, and there would be a number of clubs prepared to spend big money on him.

Realistically I don't see a reason for Lake to leave.
We are a top 4 team - with potential to win a premiership in the next few years. He will get a very good contract if akker is going to take a paycut and likely eagleton and welsh or both will be allowed to move on at the end of the season which will further free up the cap.
The only possibility is if he wants to go back home - but you'd think he'd have some loyalty after being here for so long and if you recall the way he was drafted apparently the dogs paid for him to have an operation before the draft as he was having trouble sleeping or something along those lines.

Pretty strong rumor amongst Collingwood insiders is that Lake's manager has been shopping him around and has a $500k 3 year deal on the table from another club.

What do you think will be the highest we can go for Lake?

I have no idea BFB. You'd have to know the contract details of everyone on the list and be able to predict the club's list management decisions etc.

No doubt the club could match the offer financially but there are other contracts to consider (Griffen, Hargrave, Aker, Hall? and others I'm unaware of.)

List management is complex and we have a pretty good record of late, so I'm confident the club will continue to do a good job with our player contracts.

The Lake and Griffen contracts could be being considered in the context of a big trade as well. Apparently Lake is not the only absolute A-Grade key position player being shopped around and if the Bullies wanted a player of the Roughead, Pavlich, Goodes quality well who knows what might happen with the player list.

If that's true, it's going to be impossible to match that. Guess it's a matter of loyalty then...

Are you sleeping with the club treasurer? We can match $500k if the club wants to....but it might mean making a tough call on another player deemed less valuable to the club's future.

Yeah, you are right, our list management and administration of playing contracts is very good. I am confident in the clubs ability to do its best in trying to retain Lake.

The thing that makes it hard for me to work out who to keep and who is expendable, is knowing what players are earning and the ranking of each in order of being paid. I would have absolutely no idea. So that is why I can't really do the exercise in working out what player/s to possibly sacrifice to cut in order to retain Lake. I would be only guessing. I mean what I think players are earning and what they are actually earning could be miles off and not even in the same ball park.

I'm a bit worried about this to be honest...

I know we have a large number of older players, who would be earning a bit, but surely we shouldnt be paying at 100% of the cap right now.. It leaves us with no room to adjust....

I would have thought we'd sit at the 97.5 - 98 % mark, given the number of youngsters we have to potentially come through....

If it's only the money he's interested in, he'll go to the highest bidder and we can get stuffed. But if he really wants to stay, he'll accept the best offer the club can make. I wouldn't like to be in his shoes if he does leave, he would be even less popular than a certain T Wallace and N Brown.

TDC, I typed an essay in response to your post but it didn't go through

Anyway, a short summary. James Fantasia said in an interview last night that we pay 100% of the cap. So factor the Higgins increase, 2 year draftees increase, any potential recruits ie Hall, and it is going to be tight to fit a big increase for Lake. There will have to be a few retirements or a trade to make room. We still have $250k in the marketing allowance we can use, but we need to find the cash for that.

I have confidence that the club can sign Lake but it will require quite a bit of work ie retirements, trades, back-end contracts etc.

Spot-on BFB. This is why most punters' views on who to trade and who to keep are guesswork at best. Unless you are Carlton, who seem to just cheat the salary cap, (sometimes with the AFL's blessing it seems with the Judd deal) then list management is exceptionally complex and difficult. Most clubs could not fit all of their good players plus an additional gun player under the cap: it is hard enough to keep all of what you have got, as we are finding out right now.

If the club opts to trade for a gun key position forward it may be because Lake or Griffen want more than their relative worth according to the our club - Griffen might be the one more likely to go?

Isnt that always the way....

I did read that we pay 100% elsewhere, I'm just concerned with this approach. Not for financial reasons, I'm sure the club knows what they can spend, just for list retention purposes.... I would have thought they would try to leave a little room each year just in case someone has a breakthrough year.... That way there is less pressure on the cap if they are coming out of contract...

Maybe you just can't manage to do that these days... Maybe it's just too hard to accomplish.....

He would cost you Roughead;).

One of the rumors is that some serious work is being done on a deal involving Roughead, Lake, another Bulldogs player and a first round draft pick. I have no idea whether it has legs but the rumor comes from a source that should have some credibility. I don't know whether the clubs are involved at this stage and it may be total crap. The guy who told me is usually pretty spot on and is well connected. So who knows, we may have a major list change after the season?
