Competitions Brisbane board mock draft - Round 4

In reality I think our #22 will be used on someone left-field like Parfitt or Cumming but I think the scope of Gallucci is too good to pass.

I still can't get my head around this idea that we are going to have a punt on a left-fielder or a "smokey" at 22.

I can't profess to remember the mechanics of our trading in detail but didn't we do our utmost to get as many Picks inside the top 30 as possible?

Why then would we take at 22 a player that we probably have taken with a much later pick?

Apart from that, it's not as though we have been setting the world on fire as a club any time recently.

I'd much prefer a "known" quantity from what is a deep and quality draft field than a speculative punt.

We just can't afford it.

I tend to agree with you but the word coming out of the club is we're going to have a surprise. They've said we're looking at someone who's not on the radar of mainstream media/in phantom drafts.

Pick 24 Geelong select Will Hayward

Per Cal Twomey;
Hayward stormed home late in the season to push his case as a first-round draft choice. He kicked nine goals to put his North Adelaide under-18s side into the Grand Final and backed it up with four goals in its Grand Final loss. Had they won, many suspect he would have been judged best afield. There may be a knock on his kicking, but he has plenty of power in his boot and he likes to fly for his marks. He's a bouncy, rangey type of prospect who seems to have plenty of development left in him.

I'm not going to pretend I know enough to make an educated guess, so I went and visited the Geelong board and asked them what they need. According to the response I received, Geelong's "biggest need is a key forward, and we could also use a speedy outside mid with good footskills and a good medium forward who can hit the scoreboard, and a development ruck. We dont need inside mids (unless they can also play fwd well as we have no room for inside mids) or key defenders. Based on our history the last few years we may take a mature age player and are keen on Tom Stewart from our VFL team."

General consensus is that this years crop of tall forwards is pretty lack lustre, I figured Geelong may as well look for a genuine KPF in next years draft, so decided to focus on the other areas of need. Then I watched the outside mids I was watching go in the half dozen or so picks before Geelongs, so I went for the medium forward. Other player under consideration was Cedric Cox.

Not having taken any notice of Hayward or possessing any ability to actual provide a player profile, I'm relaying on Twomey's big board and player profiles.

i see this "smokey" scenario this way. the player we may be considering at 22 as the smokey is rated on our board in that area of the draft ie.20-25. although by the broader football pundits opinions he may be in the 30-40 range.

our recruitment staff might not want to risk not getting him.

Carlton

Pick 25 - Todd Marshall (198cm, 87kg KPF from NSW/ACT)

Well if this was to be Carlton's first two picks in in the ND, I think they will be very pleased. Picking a gun midfielder with the first pick and for the second pick a KPF who was in the tipped to go in the first round for most of the year.

Todd is not a typical key position tall forward and he has a lot of filling out to do, but there is a large amount of potential to work with. He has pace, very good below his knees, has agility (so he might be okay at applying front half pressure) and solid hands.

He as some slights on his game which is probably why he slid, with his contested marking not great and lack of endurance but still I would suggest going at pick 25 is almost a 'steal' (Probably shows how the comp is starting to balance out in terms of key position forward stocks after the GCS and GWS concessions).

Curses.

Stole my next pick right from under my nose.

...............retreats into a huddle to re-assess other options!

Stay tuned.

A great pick for Carlton.
Not sure he will slide this far though.

Pick 26--Western Bulldogs

Jordan Ridley

POS: Tall defender
From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

They probably need more height at the Dogs at both ends, although they seemed to cope pretty well in 2016 with what they had.

Not to proud to admit that I relied pretty heavily on Callum Twomey's writings to come up with this selection.

The other option was Patrick Kerr but somehow that felt like a bit of a reach to me

Collingwood

Pick 28 - Harrison Macreadie

My mission with the Pies first pick was to secure a key defender and i was lucky to have a few guys available who I ranked fairly evenly in Macreadie, Brennan Cox and Declan Watson. Each of them have their flaws, but I can see Macreadie fitting the best in the modern game and had him pretty high on my board. He's a bit of a forgotten man, but was being talked about as being top 10 material at the start of the year.

Although his champs were below par I think some good coaching will bring out his best. Reads the play fairly well and provides good rebound, getting involved with chain of possession, though he probably needs to simplify a bit and take the first option. He's a great size and could probably play a handful of games in his first year. Didn't test at the Combine but he looks to run out games well.

Great work guys. Really enjoying the work and effort you've put into it.

I would love it if the actual draft went the same way.

Not so much the picks more the idea of a club turning up and announcing a name, and then the whole room shouting that they'd already been taken, that would add to the drama ;)

Morning, you can thank the kids for the early wake up:mad:, anyways.

Essendon: Cedric Cox. Has come from nowhere (almost literally) during the season. After making the move from Halls Creek to country Victoria he has made such an impact he was called up to the North Ballarat Rebels and also the U/18 All Stars match. Willing to take the game and the man on, dual sided on both feet and not afraid to lay a tackle. Another one who will take awhile but the game really likes an attacking defender and with scoring drives coming from the back half will be a handy acquisition for the red and black.

Edit: Hornet1 fire away.

I've noticed y'all are drafting a lot of the players that would be useful additions to Hawthorn's list. Now, come on guys, things have been very difficult for Hawthorn recently. Several of the players they'd selected with high draft picks have requested trades to other clubs. One of them even won a Brownlow at this new club - that's gotta sting. They didn't even get very good picks from that. Some people have started questioning their coach's strategy. And they haven't won a premiership in over thirteen months now!

It'd be real nice to let an elite player slip through, is all I'm saying. It's got to be difficult for their fans, and they'll need to see that there's some light at the end of this dark tunnel.
