Competitions Brisbane board mock draft - Round 4

I'm up, I'm up.
Pick 30- Jonty Scharenberg
Once again I'm looking locally for midfield talent to add to ports list. Jonty has an excellent ability to win the footy and give first use to his team. Needs to work harder on contested marking and hitting the score board.
Pick 31- Dylan Clarke.
The eastern ranges midfielder produced some picked up big numbers this year. Was selected in the all Australian team for his ability to win the footy. His only big knock is his poor fielding kicking in games.

The write ups are coming, I'm just flat out at the moment

Pick 32: Willem Drew
Pick 33: Brendan Parfitt

Drew is a tall inside midfielder, who the Roos would be hoping fills out to become a real presence at the contest. He looks to have a bit of natural speed and to be useful outside as well. North probably need to be regularly drafting midfielders over the next couple of years, and Drew fits in quite well with what they have I think.

North might do something a bit unusual with one of these picks, given they don't have another until the 80s. It might not be Parfitt, but he is the sort of player they should probably look at, with that agility and attacking flair, somewhat lacking for the Roos. He's not known for consistently clean disposal, and could prove a total bust, but perhaps worth the risk at this selection.

Something of a tough position for North, because a lot of the players rated in this part of the draft seem to be quite similar to the guys they've taken the last two or three years in this part of the draft. It's hard to say how the likes of McKay, Durdin, Nielson, Vickers-Willis et al are going when they never get a game, but if the Roos take someone like Rotham or Cox here then it might suggest not all that well.

I had similar thinking at 22 with Parfitt. Will be interesting to track his progress even if it is from abroad. Quigley likes him A LOT

PICK 19 SYDNEY SWANS - Jy Simpkin

Well my draft for the swans hasn't gone exactly how I had planned with me expecting to pick up some defenders. It has been a case of too good to pass up on both my picks and getting Simpkin at 19 could prove to be a real bargain. I mentioned earlier that with academy biding on AFL draft day the lions pick 16 will become around 19. Fingers crossed we get this kid then :D Adding to that I would expect the swans to bid on Setterfield at 9 if he was on the board and GWS obviously match before Swans then take Logue if available. So realistically on the true draft day the swans will likely look at the best available here.

Simpkin's potential talent has been well documented and especially in our forum with quite a few Lions fans hopeful he slides to our 2nd pick. The draft from the 2nd round onwards will be full of very good talent but if Simpkin was to slide I believe he will be a class above. He is a player that has real 360 degree awareness and beautiful skills to capitalize on that and with the composure seen in the players at the top of the draft. I see a player that will create a lot of attacking drive through the midfield & HF and will likely start his career up forward. Missing the year with a broken leg could really prove to be a blessing in disguise for any club that potentially gets him on the cheap and the Swans are way to smart to let him slide.

I have mentioned a few times that the swans really need to add defenders, but at a closer look they also need forward class as well. McGlynn has retired and far too often they looked to 2nd year player Heeney to make something happen. As good as Heeney is they wont want to keep him in the forward line too long and adding a pure class player like Simpkin will help add potential elite depth in the forward/mid rotations

Whoops, Pauldrc's next preference was Daniel Venables.

Pick 23 St Kilda - Daniel Venables

A bargain here, or overrated? Hard to say currently as he has been rated from a late top ten pick on, but certainly there are flashes of brilliance. Solid build, powerful with a bit of pace, this goal kicking mid/forward looks to have some decent upside if he works on improving his consistency. Would have loved Bolton here for his line breaking pace, and considered Marshall also. St Kilda have a good mix of youth coming through, so went for best available - Venables.

I really like him. He wont be a player you will question his attack on the ball. A real competitor with some real exciting attributes

Local Midfielder @ 34 :thumbsu:

Zac FISHER
DOB: 15/6/98 | Ht: 175.2cm | Wt: 70.3 | Perth | Small Midfielder.

The small left-footed midfielder knows how to find the ball – not matter the level that he’s playing at. He made some big strides in the back half of 2015 with Perth in the Colts competition and hit the ground running this year before playing most of the year in the Demons league team, where he didn’t look out of place. As a midfielder, he hunts the ball both inside and outside the contest and shows good energy but can be cleaner with his hands on ground balls. Size will be a concern, but as Lachie Neale has shown, its not a roadblock.

I was giving him serious thought at 33.

pick 35- Fremantle.

Brennan Cox 194cm. 92kg. KPD.

rationale- the dockers are in need of KPD talent with out goings such as McPharlin, Silvagni and Dawson nearing the end. i see him as the best KPD left in the draft pool.

others in contention- Josh Rotham, Declan Watson, Kobe Mutch.

Pick 36 St Kilda - Josh Rotham

Athletic, medium sized linebreaking defender. Has some nice pace, with good skills. More consistency could se him take his game to a high level. Again, another player some had going higher.

As a St Kilda fan you'd be pretty happy with Venables and Rotham.

This exercise has really given me a feel for how deep this draft is going to be. Still some great players on the board :thumbsu:

Pick 37 GWS

** thanks to Knightmare **

Kobe Mutch (NSW/ACT - GWS Academy)
Best position:
Inside midfield
Height, weight: 184cm, 79kg
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Plays like: Brad Ebert
Projected draft range: second to third round
Rated last month: 12
Rationale behind ranking/change of ranking: One of this year's most productive and consistent midfielders. Lack of late-season TAC Cup or NEAFL exposure sees Mutch drop because others have improved.
Strengths:
- Production
- Endurance
- Unrewarded outside run
- Work rate
- Stoppage work
- Wins first-possession at stoppages
- Contested-ball winning
- Distribution by hand
- Tackling
- Clean hands
- Links up well
- Football smarts
- Comfortable kicking with either foot
- Two-way runner
Weaknesses:
- Lacks an x-factor
- Clean but not damaging ball user by hand and foot
- Pace
- Contested marking

Pick 38 Geelong Select Patrick Kerr

Per Cal Twomey.
POS: Key forward, Ht 194cm, Wt 93kg, DOB 31/7/98
From Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro

There's some old-fashioned traits in Kerr, a key forward who played for the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro this year. Kerr enjoys leading out of the goalsquare at the ball, and took the most marks on the lead of any player at the under-18 carnival. That highlighted his style, and he is a reasonably solid kick for goal. In a draft light on for talls, he is in the top group. Some have questioned Kerr's pace but he ran 3.03 seconds at the combine over 20 metre sprint, although his agility result at the lower end.

Really was hoping Brennan Cox would last until pick 38, but jason pm broke Geelong hearts. It was a real close decision between Kerr and Elliot Himmelberg.
