Andrews > De Koning/Pittonet.
Payne/Gardiner > Curnow.
Joyce > McKay.

Froggy > Sub.

I don't think Lester has the athleticism to go with Curnow and too short for the other keys who play forward.

I don't expect this to happen, IMO Payne will play and we will make no changes, maybe we do start Lester on Curnow, just had a look at their heights and if you can believe footywire they are both 192cm... Curnow 92kg to Froggy 84kg though.
Joyce was terrible in the Reserves on the weekend. Lester has shown that he has got what it takes at this level. He has a good leap, spoils well, is an elite ball user, taken some clutch intercept marks and provides rebound. If Payne is cleared to play, there will be ‘no change’ to the team. As I have said previously, Adcock has done wonders with our defence and we aren’t about to chuck all that in the air against Carlton. To be honest, I really don’t think the ball is going to be in our backline that much.

This Jack Payne story is really concerning me. He is our safest matchup for keeping Curnow quiet.

Lester doesn’t have the size to shut Curnow out.

Dizzy is underdone so let’s be honest, to come in from the VFL and play on the best forward in the country in a PF would be a tough ask. Nor is he a great matchup for McKay or DK.

Andrews will have his hands full across Mckay and De Koning.

IMO If Payne doesn’t play, there will be nothing stopping Curnow from dominating this game. So I really hope either Jack’s fine for Saturday, or we are just playing mind games with them.

Advice on where we should go for pre drinks and a bite to eat before the game?

Also, advice on where to go after the game please 🙏

Agree, that is what I said.

Lester has been very good, however IF Payne goes out I worry about our ability to cover McKay/Curnow/De Koning/Pittonet.... I think it will come down to how well we defend up the field with our forwards and mids, if Curnow gets good supply there wouldn't be a defender in the competition that could stop him.

I think we agree on the solution, we win the ball out of the middle and kick lots of goals.

Sad attempts to bait me just won’t work. Anyone at this stage who suggests Lester is omitted is really just showing they don’t know much about football.

Lester (192cm) thrashed Finlayson (197 cm) in the Qualifying Final, again demonstrating his ability to play “tall”. Finlayson kicked a single behind and had a paltry 6 disposals and tellingly, only two marks. He also matched up on Powell-Pepper at different stages, with his goal saving run down tackle and subsequent free kick a highlight that drew praise from fans and commentators alike.

Andrews and Payne need to take McKay and De Koning, which means Lester should get a crack at Curnow. I would back him in. He hasn’t let us down and I don’t think he will. He has been for months and remains one of our most consistent and in form defenders.

Not sure why you felt the need to insult, certainly wasn’t baiting. I think Lester deserves his place, I’m just concerned he’s undersized. We haven’t come up against a team with three big talls for some time. Finlayson is a completely different prospect to Curnow.

Sorry, I wasn’t actually referring to you. Please accept my apologies.

This is my biggest worry. We have had some shocking performances this year when we have underestimated opposition. It is going to be vital to start with high intensity.
Yep, there's a few ways Saturday night could go. My mind can't help but wander back to Prelim Finals of years gone by, as potential markers and cautionary tales for what could lie ahead for us.

The (other) 99 prelim pitted Essendon against Carlton. Obviously Essendon would go on to completely dominate in 2000 like never seen before (or since), but even in 99, by the time this game rolled around they had lost just once since Round 8 and finished top of the ladder. We'd thumped Carlton earlier in the finals and they'd basically been completely written off by everyone.

Essendon came out playing a bit like millionaires however, Carlton hit em between the eyes, Essendon kicked inaccurately and by half time Essendon had kicked 3-10 to be 4 goals down. They turned it on in the 3rd, kicking 7 goals to 2, but were unable to bury Carlton who came home strong to win by a point.

The lesson from this game for mine then is we have to start the game with the right mindset. Be calm and confident, sure, but at the same time be ready to play with that edge and aggression you need in big games. Take the chances that present early... any Daniher/Hipwood misses from 12 metres out will be an early warning sign that we are not mentally attuned to the task at hand. And that mindset can spread across the field, firstly within the team, before serving to give the opposition a sniff as well.

Another game that springs to mind is the 2007 prelim between Geelong and Collingwood. Similar to Essendon above, Geelong had only lost 1 match since Round 5 and had dispatched North by 106 points in the Qualifying Final.

This was a tough game tho right the way through. Multiple times it looked as tho Geelong were about to break the game open. They got out to 17 points in time on 2nd quarter and out to 18 points after 12 minutes of the last. But each time it looked like that elastic band was about to break, Collingwood hauled them back in, and at the death it was the Cats who were hanging on for dear life.

Hang on they did tho, and they went on to break all sorts of records the next week.

The 2014 prelim between Hawthorn and Port is sort of a cross between the first two. Port made all the running early and if they'd done better than kick 3-9 they might have been more than 2 goals up at quarter time.

Hawthorn controlled the next two quarters, but with the margin 29 points halfway through the last, 4 quick goals to Port set up a grandstand finish.

Both these games, in hindsight, felt like the tough hit out these teams had to have before going on to have very good Grand Finals.

The one comparison I'm very conscious of, and somewhat afraid of, is of the 2017 prelim between Adelaide and Geelong. That Adelaide team were considered the most talented in the comp, and they totally blitzed Geelong that night. They led 57-9 just 6 minutes into the 2nd quarter, and for the rest of the night they were in cruise control.

It counted for very little tho... the soft last 3 quarters of that game was the worst thing possible for them, and Richmond simply out-toughed them on Grand Final day.

I see a lot of parallels between that Adelaide team and us. Very talented, great to watch, both teams kick high scores, Charlie Cameron of course, but while a game like this would be good for all our heart rates etc, I wonder if it would be the best thing for our Grand Final preparation. Particularly if (as I believe we will) we meet the Giants in the Grand Final, a team who rely less on individual talent and more on their system, sheer will and work rate.

Hopefully we come to play with the right mindset, we are able to put a solid 4 quarter effort together that is good enough to get the win, yet still with room for improvement that has the lads yearning for a better performance on Grand Final day.

Interesting to note talk the blues will drop a running player for McKay

Yes it could stretch us - 2 rucks with one rest forward alongside mckay and curnow

But They looked to be out on their feet late v dees. Some risk in taking away some run.

Payne not only playing but being fit would really calm me.

A poster on carlton’s board seemed adamant he won’t play but wouldn’t be the first time it was bad mail. Still sometimes it’s right

A lot of jumping at shadows going on.

Curnow couldn't get warm last week. Even though we have history of big forwards beating up on us it's almost always been because they're getting constant supply.

Our task this week is to get hold of the ball and propel it forward. Whoever the backs are will do their job provided we do the former often enough.

Thought you missed the most obvious comparison.

Week one. One team who couldn't crack top four wins by two points. The other - a team that looked to have found form at the back end of the season - wins a close game.

Week two. The team that couldn't crack top four had to face a flag favourite. Against all odds, they won.

Week three. The underdog who had a talented list went against the assured, seasoned team who just had a week off. The experienced team was fresh and trained well. The underdog had won two physical scraps.

The underdog was soundly beaten by their fresh opponent.

The teams? Brisbane and Geelong.

Feels eerily similar, except we're Geelong.

Todd Marshall could have kicked 4-5 last week. Although maybe that shows Payne is already struggling!

I might be the moz but for the first time since geelong i am not having an emotional hedge bet on the oppo.

Can we do to Carlton what they did to us?

Looking at Acres and Doc last week I'll be delirious if they get up for this week.

Walsh won't do that again. Cripps looks half banged up and it was a brave effort by him to pull something out of the fire in the last half, just can't see him going to that level against fit hungry opposition.

I respect the fact that they have several very good players but they've been dead lucky to win those 2 finals and they're facing a team that is very good and rested up.

Sure it's a game of footy and anything's possible ,but......

Anyone think we might make him our sub instead of Lyons?

What about Fort given all their height forward of centre?

Honestly would rather Gunston sub. Plays forward but is quite a good backman. More versatile than Dizzy in that regard.

Personally I expect Dizzy will play and Payne will miss, but who knows. I guess we will tomorrow if he trains well.

Nunez did you watch Gunners when we sent him to the backline in 2 games this year ?

Complete liability. Unless the old Gunners of 4 years ago can come back.

The doomsday is still oscar going down. We have no mcstay this time. Gawn is gone but now we face blues with 2 proper rucks. Considering how little we use the sub and that we are a tall down on previous set-up i think we are playing russian roulette with no second ruck in the 23. At some point oscar will go down. He hasn’t once this year. Ruck is hardly a risk-free proposition! Daniher is the only other logical ruck. He is our second leading goal kicker, kicked 5 v power. And leaves hippy as only tall forward!

In an ideal world we would have someone who could play ruck for a whole match if oscar goes down but we don’t now. So while it would waste a sub, i’d go fort.
