Browny is past it but sadly he is our only option up forward.

A few people have posted along these lines, but clearly Brown is not our only option up forward.

Given Brown's appalling form, a forward line which had Lisle at full forward, McKeever at centre half forward and Cornelius as the third marking option strikes me a better forward set up to the one we had today. Remember, we kicked a paltry ten goals today, while Brown had nine disposals didn't kick a goal.

One thing is for sure, Brent Staker looks like Lance Franklin right now.

Lester was given a very big job, and he left nothing out there. I saw him barely able to get up a job in the 3rd quarter, but he was still battling away right to the end, even copping a shot to the face with cracked him open. Kid has guts and did a very very good job tonight after being given a very very difficult job. Outside of Bergs, and Moloney, Lester was next best for me.

The game plan has gone out the window. We kick long and high and slow to the wings to a contest and do nothing else. We've gone backwards 18-24 months. We don't win our share of the footy from the middle, not getting first hands on it, then we kick it long to a contest when we do. How about we keep hold of the ball for a bit, kick it around, lower the eyes, and how about someone actually bloody well moves and gives a lead for the bloke to kick to. Everyone is just standing still when we have the ball, just waiting for the ball carrier to kick it to the ruckman sitting 40-50m away on the wing. We are going to get cut up in every game where we get smashed in uncontested ball. We sit in our zone 5m off opponents and let them move the ball easy 30 meters at a time with uncontested kicks, then bomb it straight back to them when they finally kick to a contest inside 50. Two words, UNREWARDED RUNNING - we aren't doing it.

More speed in the midfield would be pretty handy as well. Redden, Rich, Rockliff and Moloney are all on the slower side of midfielders IMO. We really just need to go harder and get our hands on the ball first. There isn't a great deal we can do player wise because our better midfielders just aren't playing well.

Where was McGrath on the lead? Where was Bewick on the lead?

This is what stood out to me, given our complete lack of tall forwards.

I thought that the NAB Cup final had shown that we had finally learned our lesson about the need to have smaller forwards leading at the ball carrier, I can't remember it happening once tonight with Ash, Polks or Bewick. Browny and co were sitting ducks under the long bombs as a result.

I haven't seen Sam Mayes play this year, but if he's fit I would be looking to play him next week instead of McGrath, particularly against GC.

Brown's position play is all over the shop. The reality is he is creeping into his own space, this is why he is standing still so often with the ball is kicked too him. At his best he would push further back to create that vacuum of space, he knows he doesn't have the acceleration to beat his opponent to the footy. Lisle must come in and be a true CHF who pinch hits in the ruck. Martin's work ethic and athletic abilty was evident today. To me he is a defender who uses his athletic ability to work over players. The ball should be in his hands for a minimal amount of time!!! Play him back on Sam Day next week.

At least Bewick created a contest and played on at every opportunity. McGrath is gone!

Bewick needs space to lead into. I think one of Brown or Martin have to play much further up the field.

Was surprised that tonight a number of times we went forward Martin was double teamed as the target up forward. Use to be Browny, so if two players are on Martin who is free and why isn't Browny able to take advantage?

The thing with Brown is that he is slow etc. But he at least provides a contest. It got me thinking that Brown is playing his role and that maybe it is the smaller forwards who are not reading the play, ie crumbing. When was the last time you have seen a lions player crumb of a Brown contest? I havent seen that in years.

The lack of a 2nd tall in the backline came to haunt us. Lester battled well but Jenkins was dangerous all day. What is wrong with Patfull? He wandered around aimlessly without a man at times as Adelaide played one and sometimes 2 extra in their defence . He should have been the one to take Jenkins to free up Lester to provide extra run off half back.
Yeo is looking a bit tired but I would persevere. He is going to be a class act in the near future. I think he could take a spot up forward at Polkinghorne's or Mcgrath's expense or be used on the wing. We need to inject more leg speed across half forward to assist with forward pressure. Docherty or Harwood should get a chance at half back.
Why did we activate our sub with just 15 minutes left in the game? (See Polkinghorne,Mcgrath comment above)
On a positive note. Well done Leuie! He was great and Beams showed why he should be in the starting line up. He just needs more game time to build game fitness and show his talent.

While Polks's possessions were largely ineffectual, he did put in for the whole match.

Ash, on the other hand, does not deserve a spot in the seniors any more.

Sitting right above the interchange bench, he was not happy when given the red shirt, but you are correct, he had 3 disposals to 3/4 time.

Just watched the replay and it's not quite as disastrous as people have been reacting.
Leuey coming in should assist the mids (providing he stays on the park), and boy do they need assisting. Right now, Rich, Redden and Rockliff are on the cusp of all having 3 shockers in a row o_O All need to watch a tape of a N.Lappin, a L.Hayes, a R.Harvey and know what it looks like to gut-run till your lunch comes up - all seem a little soft when the pressure is really on. None are close to the A-grade we need them to be.
This is a pretty dump post. They're on the cusp of three shockers? You're already writing them off for next week?

Why people are grouping Rockliff with Redden and Rich based on the start of their seasons?? If he's having a shocker then Rich and Redden must be having an absolute disastrous start to the season

He was our best on ground last week and spent 70% of today's game in the forward line. 13 of 20 disposals were contested and kicked a crucial goal. Not sure how this constitutes a shocker, let alone last week? It was an average game for his standards but he was in our best 10.

Whereas Rich and Redden have combined for 49 disposals in two games and Rockliff has had 53 by himself.

o_O Man you're a tough marker.

Lester is all heart - despite being outplayed, he hung in there and persevered. Need his team-mates to show as much desperation.

I agree regarding the comments about Adcock; he has started really poorly these first two rounds and just looks terribly slow or not able to read the play. He is a good player so i'm pretty sure he'll tune into speed sometime soon.

Our guys just look a bit lethargic on field / or missing grunt. Voss needs to try Harwood in the guts and be that enforcer we desperately crave.

I am confused - in one thread you have put Brown to sword and want him gone but now it is the crumber's fault.

Look forward to watching the game on the talky box.
Stting in GA, I only got half the game as the ball spent a lot of time down the other end.
What I learnt today:
Heaps of young ladies wear short shorts to the footy.:) Seriously, if you're a young bloke you should get along to the Gabba;)
Stadium beer is real expensive. I could never get drunk at the footy unless I win lotto.
The bus service and busways are pretty excellent. I haven't been on the road for work for a few years now and where I use to spend a lot of time around town, the changes are amazing.
There are a lot of Adelaide supporters up here. Makes sense really, where would you rather live?
I'll reserve comments on the game 'til I've watched the TV version, completely different to the live thing. There are things you miss in both a TV broadcast and also at the ground. This should be remembered when slamming our players because some that have copped a hiding looked to me like they went alright. Plenty happens off the ball that the cameras don't catch and that mitigate the televised efforts.
Good game I thought.
Oh, did I mention the young short shorts:oops:
