Bruce McAvaney... I think its time

You can't enjoy the game anymore.
When Cyril gave away those free kicks in the 3rd for unrealistic attempts, I almost felt bad about the calls.

Commentators need to know there is no good and bad and there is no underdog. Call the game as it is and leave the narrative to the game itself.
Ten years of below par unacceptable commentary is just too much. Something has to give.

The problem isn't just Bruce, it's the whole mediocre commentary members on C7 from Bruce, BT, Darcy, Basil, Richo, Leigh Matthews, and I could go on. Even Dennis isn't as good as he used to be, and it's time for him to retire. But the problem is C7 has a monopoly on the FTA broadcasting so they're under no pressure to change it. They don't care that most people hate their commentary and game calling. So it won't change. Bruce was once a good sports caller, but he started to believe his publicity and started to over call everything. Rex Hunt made that mistake.

The issue is, what sort of KPI can you use with commentators? How can 7 objectively tell whether the commentary team is adequate or not? It's not like they are losing viewership over it, we're all going to watch the games anyway.

And yes, Bruce has become a parody of himself. Not sure if he is doing it deliberately or whether age has caught up with him but it really does need to stop if he's to remain one of the premier callers in the game.

& they have a team doing the VFL that shit all over those morons - Jason Bennett, Campbell Brown (yes, I am stunned too ) & some other bloke who's name I don't know. They actually call the footy, describe well WHAT IS GOING ON, & don't go off drooling over this or that player, try to crack lame ****ing jokes (Commetti, just hurry the **** up & retire already you doss campaigner) or carry on all game about which goal post players need to aim for.

I think in general most AFL commentators are terrible and unprofessional. They add cheap talk to each game and barrack hard (usually) for the team that's winning. It is very irritating when your team is losing and you are hearing 3-4 grown men orgasm about an opposition player. 'Oh he is a genius'!!!

As for Bruce he has lost the plot. Constantly ending each sentence with a question that he answers himself.

Also I'd like to add I feel for Caleb Daniel. Absolutely outstanding player and commentators spend all game every game talking about his height. Bruce even called him a 'midget' last night. Bruce was upset that the Hawks were losing but it's still disrespectful to the young man. They should concentrate on his football ability which is immense.

My favourite part was when the Hawks got those 2 late goals and had somewhat of a sniff, which to be fair they did, because if anyone was going to kick 2-3 goals in the same amount of minutes the Hawks would and could.

Bruce clearly had his **** out ready to jizz everywhere and got told by the rest not to bother.

The #### pissed me off that much (I swear this is true) that early in the 3rd qrt, I muted the tv and put on The Ramones greatest hits full boar on the stereo and watched the game in peace. Last 5 mins I put TV back on.

New does not always equate with better, and what is better than a seasoned professional? Bruce is colorful, educated, knowledgeable and has class. The problem with being "progressive" is that once you get to the top of the mountain, the only "progress" left is to go downhill. But, history seems ever destined to repeat itself.

If I may opine, it seems that only mature minds can tolerate repetition. The rest... "Do something, even if it's wrong!" But, if there is someone with better qualities than Bruce then fair 'nuff; otherwise, why replace him with a wannabe?

I think the point is Bruce doesn't have class calling football any more, and he isn't the same caller he used to be, if you've followed footy for long enough.

The problem with Ch 7 seems to be that they either don't respect the game enough, or the viewer enough, to let the game do the story telling most of the time. So they search for some (often) silly narrative that can be incredibly annoying to people, when the game itself can tell us all we need to know. To some, footy might be 'entertainment.' But to many it's such a great game that is an integral part of their lives, it's not much to ask that a commentator should afford the game and the watching public a little respect instead of trying to become an integral part of it. It's like an umpire getting too involved, just steer the thing a long from time to time. Don't go searching for things that aren't there.

I hate how the commentators in AFL constantly Jizz over everything that happens. Just call the damn play, then the actual good moments will seem even more special. NFL commentary is much closer to what I'd like to see. Straightforward, a bit of colour, not so much bullshit
