------------------------

I'm a parochial South Aussie and I've watched Bryce Gibbs' career with a mixture of pride and frustration. A lot of the frustration is aimed at Carlton and Brett Ratten and others who failed to develop him the way other clubs would have.

He's clearly a hugely talented footballer. I put him in the Brendon Goddard category of everywhere man who can do everything well on the field, but who should be played midfield and forward to maximise his talents.

I also compare him to Goddard in that he's a guy who thrives on a challenge. Good in last year's finals win over Richmond. Very good in his first year of football when he had everything to prove. A lot of patches in between where he has been good enough, without meeting his potential.

Carlton's short term future looks bleak. I imagine Bryce thinks the same. Most teams are a lot closer to a Premiership than Carlton.

Goddard and others have led the way and shown that moving clubs (even within Melbourne) is not the end of the world and does not make you a hate figure at your old club. In many respects it could be an easy decision for Bryce.

So assuming he is looking (which he alluded to last week), who are the favourites?

My list in descending order:

1) Hawthorn - room in the cap, need midfielders, not a rival of Carltons, who wouldn't want to play for Hawthorn atm?
2) Adelaide - family connections (of sorts), they need to show some quality this year otherwise no point in Bryce moving if he wants a Premiership
3) Port - showing signs of becoming a seriously good football team, very good coach, good Administration, get to return home

Why? I only intend to judge the final on-field result, not where we finished in any single year.
Eh? On-field result tends to be a win or a loss.

Because we finished nowhere in 2014, bottom in 2015, 14th in 2016 and 16th in 2017, how long does a club need to tread water for before we see some improvement?

Cripps is our best player.

We also lost a heap of close games last year after leading in the final term especially when Cripps was injured.

I am confident we are winning more games than this year in 2018 even without Bryce and another Pre Season into the multiple kids who all got RS noms coupled with a young Harry McKay and this years crop of kids who knows what can happen!

Fanciful thinking that suits your agenda that we will go backwards win/loss wise in 2018.

Cripps will be your best player (and better than Gibbs has ever been) but Gibbs has been your best for a couple of years now, in my opinion anyway.

You've got a lot of talented youth. Even if a few go wrong, you'll still be in good shape from about 2019 onwards.

Yeah exactly but I would say Melbourne not even interviewing Martin while picking two.players that are no longer at Melbourne is now the biggest miss of all time and we did get a first and second rounder for Tambling from Adelaide in the end.

Fiora?

Takes a while for your better recruitment to show through.
You had a long time there where your trading and recruitment sucked. Its widely accepted that problems with that have been somewhat solved.
The young guys you're getting in now really look like they could form a finals team.

Oh, definitely... we were terrible at the contest all season...

Your downhill skiers were invisible against Richmond.

2017 Kruezar was comfortably our best player, then Docherty.. Gibbs probably 3rd.

They probably had the same theory Adelaide did/does.
Want solid citizens over gun footballers. How you end up with guys like Nathan Van Berlo and miss out on brownlow medallists like Dane Swan and Dusty martin

I agree post 2015-Carlton is a different sort, but if we accept going backwards because we lose one midfielder then we're ****ed.

What happens next year when we lose Simpson? The next couple when Kreuzer and Murphy slow down then hang them up? As a supporter base I think it's fair to expect some improvement from here. SOS even said this week we need to start winning games again.

I think you'll cover for Simpson a lot better than Gibbs.
Just because youre a bit more shallow in the mids than half back

I mean Docherty kinda took Simpsons role from 2016 to now anyhow didnt he?

Win loss isn't necessarily a good indicator of progress when rebuilding. All I saw last year was improvement and progress and I don't believe our ladder position makes any difference to that. If you only looked at our ladder position, you'd have to say we got worse, which would be ridiculous.

There will be a point where we do start judging by win loss record but that won't be next season, at least not for me.

Not really, but I agree Gibbs will be a massive hole to fill, and it might be Docherty that fills it. We already have very shallow depth in our midfield and hopefully Kennedy & Lang help and then SPS & Cunningham can take steps and become established AFL players. We then get Gibbs back and some top draft picks.. We will be okay, but i think Adelaide backing us being bottom 3 to make use of the picks we gave back is premature. I would be disappointed if we are not top 10 and hopeful can sneak into the 8.

For me the maturity of the playing group will have us win at least 50% of the close games that we lost this year.

No last year SOS wanted 2 First rounders straight up.

we didnt even have two first rounders last year.

Not even close to the same. Swapping one of our firsts for one of your seconds is pretty much like a 5 or 6 pick downgrade.
We turned Gibbs + 40 into 10 + 30 + Kennedy and traded pick 20 (blues 2nd) and 38 (blues 3rd) next year for 26 (dogs 2nd) + 34 (Adelaide 2nd) which basically negates itself, if either you or the dogs have a below par year next season we win on the future swaps as well.

I'd have taken 10, 10 + Kennedy was a dream and throwing in 30 just makes a man smile.

Which is about right for a player of his age/stature, you think?

It may be slightly over his market worth as 28 year old, but a proper assessment will depend on;
- whether he helps you win a flag (I hope he does) and
- whether we draft a 200 game member of a future Carlton premiership team (I hope we do).

Overall Adelaide had a good trade period. Maybe slightly overs for Gibbs, but came out on top of both Lever and Cameron trades.

If Carlton finish bottom two and we win the flag next year this trade looks a lot better.

Adelaide gain Gibbs and 2018 pick 20.
Carlton gain picks 10, 16 and 36.

I can live with that. Especially given we still have pick 12 this year and two first rounders next year.

You guys had to do this trade - but could have done it last year seems it was more expensive for you guys this year.

I don’t think it is though, was just listening to Cripps from Port Power and he said last years and the 2018 were rated higher.

So we get Gallucci in a stronger draft and don’t trade away a future pick with the unknown stigma with it.

Carlton may pick up a gun a pick 10 but it seems as if we have reduced the risk from our side by giving the 2 firsts this year
