Wouldn't be shocked if Mitch doesn't pick up the three votes this week. He got near 40 touches and always polls very very well.

However, it was pretty obvious that buddy was the best player on the field today, he won us the game singlehandedly. He is so, so, so good.

No, who would want to win an over-rated umpires award? Coleman's are worth more anyway.

Rather he win the MVP, or Coaches Award.

If he doesn't get the frees he wont get the votes. Great player though. Carey never won a brownlow, if you backchat the ump, they will stitch you up on the votes.

How good to see him take contested overhead marks IN FRONT both one on one and on the lead.

It was his aerial ability and ground level ability that set him apart. The ground level stuff had not deserted him but the overhead stuff had - until this season...

He is without doubt back to his best form - that was his most complete game for a long time.

You're right. Carey not winning one proves it's a joke award, and you can add players such as Leigh Matthews to that list and there'd be many others. Add to this the fact an ordinary player like Woewodin has won a medal and the award has now become elitist in that it is restricted to midfielders and we need no further evidence the Brownlow is an anachronism. If you win one, good luck to you, but who really cares?

Two reasons it will never happen:
a) As we all know, the Chaz is now the exclusive property of midfielders
b) Buddy is so far from being an umpires' favourite, it's ridiculous (I avoided the suggestion that the 'men in white' hate him)

I will say though, Buddy regularly gives away some stupid free kicks; a trait he has to eliminate from his game, if only for the benefit of the team.

Being 6'7" and trying to tackle 6 footers who drop at the knees as he tries to apply the tackle doesn't help either.

Nor being 6'7" and going the 'fend-off' when avoiding being tackled..he just gets them in the face every time

i wouldn't say that franklin is exactly 'hated' by the umps in terms of attracting votes. i think he polled quite well in 08. given that he's become a more team-orientated player, you'd say he would have polled pretty well in the last 2 games.

While Buddy has had a good start to the season I would say hold on to your money.

This years Chaz Medal will be Swans - after the look on Eddies face at the presentation last year, umpires wouldn't dare not give the votes to Swan (although he is playing good football as well).

I dont think he will get it. He may poll the most votes but I've rubbed the lint off my lucky red jellybaby, consulted my crystal ball, and have seen that Buddy will play a game with a cold, he will sneeze at an opposition player who will go down like a sack of $hit, and be winded for 3 minutes - the team runner will submit an expert medical report, and the MatchReviewPenises will rub Buddy out for a week citing the Rioli rule.

Ken Judge seems to think he's worth a punt, according to this mornings West. Reasoning being that Franklin is spending much more time in the midfield, while still kicking the goals

Quite right. This is one reason why Buddy wasn't made vice captain. Imagine if Hodgey was out, and Buddy had to toss the coin:

The minute he shook the opposing captain's hand it would be: intentional contact (3 points) low impact (1 point). Meaning 400 activation points. All academic though, since after that he would shake the umpire's hand: intentional contact with an umpire - career over.

I've been waiting a number of years to see Buddy cut-loose...I think it may happen soon, and a 10 goal bag is within reach...but he knows, as we all do, that its the long haul, and when we salute in September we will ride all the other bumps with a grin
