Mega Thread Buddy Franklin moves to Sydney

It's a dog act from Sydney, Buddy and his management but he did his job for us this year. For that I thank him. Hopefully he ends up like Dermie and stinks it up :p Don't want him to be remembered as a Sydney player.

Fair enough but just for 1 minute put COLA aside and without sooking up and being a smartarse which most of your posts reek of explain in a mature manner on why it is a dog act.

I have mixed emotions and fluctuating opinions on this.

- Obviously very disappointed at losing a favorite player.
- Currently feel a bit jaded about the AFL, and my interest has fallen away a little, hopefully it returns with a new season.
- He's given his all to the HFC during his time here, respect for that.
- He did his best not to derail 2013 even though he knew he was leaving, respect for that.
- He wants to go to Sydney for the lifestyle = fair enough, it's his life, enjoy it.
- We have picked up good players from other clubs like Gunston and Burgoyne, so we have been on the good end of these deals.
- Maybe hurts a little more (or less, not sure) leaving straight after a premiership, didn't leave us much time to enjoy it.
- ?

Timing of free agency and stuff is a bit close to the premiership really from a fans perspective

Sydney are plain stupid. They will be paying him over $1m when he is 35 and finished...

exactly. I do not agree with the contract. nor should any swans fans. Opposition fans should be laughing at the stupidity of Andrew Ireland rather then attacking the club.

How do we retain players? how is this viable?

I think the football world is seeing things upside down as the advantage is potentially only 1 year. the disadvantage is 4/5 years. He is no Dustin Fletcher.

Ok so can we get say Fyfe, on an 80 year deal for $18mil ?

$1mil a year for the first 10, and then $114k a year for the next 70 years. As he'd be a veteran after 10 years, the $114k doesnt count in the cap.
Shhhhh. We were going to leave that one for a year and catch them off guard :/

Is length of contract a factor in FA compensation? Could we potentially get a first round pick rather than an end of first round.

It is, but after our 1st round is the highest there is, as things stand.

We could tho bring in a couple of FAs and as Buddy deal is so big, still get a band 1 pick.

Because it's such a long contract we could potentially paying him nothing in his last years. Wouldn't be surprised if he takes up a decent % when Goodes, LRT, okeefe, Richards all leave in a short period so we have $$ in 2019 to recruit the next Franklin.

Anyway, for what reasons would the AFL be able torpedo this deal? Surely we'd have to be in breach of the TPP's for them to act? Otherwise it's just our stupidity for offering him so much.

Very funny, but also very insightful.

Sydney would be relying on the veterans list rules to help them out for the last 6 years of this deal. What if veterans rules change?

Tapping up a player is something I'm not fond of. I have no doubt that my own club does it and as does every other club. I'd prefer things to be done at least close to the trade period but this was 12 months before which is quite ridiculous. It's meticulous planning by the $wans so credit to your list management.

Buddy wanted to get this done at the end of the 2013 season. It seemed he had made his mind up a long time before then. Not a good look by him.

And I never mentioned COLA in that post so no idea why you are putting words in my mouth.

Sydney have a lot of old players this deal gives them key power forwards going forward. when goodes retires O'keefe etc in a years time that money will get freed up to keep some of their young midfielders who will be wanting their contracts reviewed by then.
With the players retired and been moved on Sydney are just been clever in their list management and are actually been professional about it.

Hiding away in Sydney out of media scrutiny they can do deals under the radar that can't be done in melbourne perth adelaide with out every hack journalist finding out about it.
I still think the outrage is that Buddy went to a strong non victorian perceived premiership threat not to a weak developing club who won't be a threat.
Buddy won't care his not Victorian anyway.;)

By then your COLA advantage will be gone and you won't have the capacity to do it (assuming you are still thereabouts)

As much as I loathe Hawthorn, it saddens me to hear this.

For God's sake, you've just won a flag a few days ago and then they come and kick you in the guts.

And they say people are silly for staying loyal/wanting their players to stay loyal/calling out mercenaries. Nonsense - the entire appeal of the sport is the emotional investment and the iconography of a given player at a given club, not the brilliance of off-season conniving and scheming.

But what happens if he dies before the end of it?

Massive issue for you and the AFL. The deal was not done with the AFL's blessings. Would have been some interesting conference calls today.

If you are hanging your hat on the AFL not allowing the deal to go ahead as some sort of consolation for Franklin wanting to play with the Swans you are going to be disappointed. Ireland would not have fronted on 360 tonight and spoke as candidly about the deal as he did if they had even remotely had anything to worry about. Only way Franklin does not play for Sydney next year is Hawthorn match the offer. If that happens then happy days. Sad days for Swans I suppose though as there will be no going back and trying to resign Mumford as he would realise by now with negotiations going on for the last 12 months with Franklin and the Swans not resigning him he is the sacrificial lamb.
