Hey fellow Hawks, as someone who has spent most working days reading these boards but rarely posting, you may not know me (my first thread);

Anyway, as someone who enjoys the little things about our game and most importantly, the feats of Hawthorn players, I was toying with a (somewhat trivial) idea. I thought I would post, week-by-week, Buudy's place on the Alltime VFL/AFL Goalkicking list, so we can see him overtake our favourite/hated/current players and see the unfolding of what place in history he takes.

For example, this week:

Buddy moved to # 408 on the All-Time List with 175 goals

This week he overtook:
409 174 Alves, S.266 1965 Melbourne/Nth Melb
410 174 Bruns, N.223 1978 Geelong
411 174 Richardson, M.156 1983 Collingwood/Essendon/Bris Bears
412 174 Bayes, M.246 1985 Sydney
413 174 Gleeson, A. 176 1986 Carlton
414 174 Hall, T. 114 1988 Hawthorn/Adelaide
415 174 Lappin, N.* 279 1994 Bris Lions/Bris Bears
416 173 Mensch, D. 158 1992 Geelong
417 172 Bairstow, M. 146 1987 Geelong
418 172 Campbell, W. 297 1991 Richmond
419 172 Johnson, C. 264 1994 Bris Lions/Fitzroy
420 171 Cooper, R. 159 1932 Carlton/Nth Melb
421 171 Ross, J. 139 1946 St Kilda
422 171 Branton, R. 170 1953 Richmond
423 171 McGowan, B. 118 1955 Sth Melb
424 171 Elshaug, T. 137 1979 Melbourne/Essendon/Collingwood
425 171 Buhagiar, T. 108 1981 Essendon/Footscray
426 171 Heatley, J. 63 1995 West Coast/St Kilda
427 170 Harvey, M. 206 1984 Essendon
428 170 Broderick, P. 262 1988 Fitzroy/Richmond
429 170 Edwards, T.* 276 1995 Adelaide
430 170 Mooney, C.* 153 1999 Geelong/Kangaroos

Is this a something you guys are interested in? I can do it anyway you like, say 3 players above and below? only when he ovetakes current players? Hawks? Big names? etc.

If this is boring, that's fine too!

Mate this is the place for all things football, so go right ahead.

Would like to see who he's catching up to!

Great Bay 13 ammo.

Sure, say all players within 5 goals, or the next 10 current players he will catch?

FWIW (sneak preview),
next current players to be left in his wake;

# 396 S.Johnson 178 goals
# 394 B.Holland (Mel) 178
# 388 P.Chapman 180
# 373 C.Jones 184
# 371 Q.Lynch 185

Go for it.
Not sure though if it might be better on Hawk Board to keep idiots out, but if you are not a regular poster/thread starter you may not have access.

Thanks very much for the appraisals guys!

I'll do it week by week, listing who he has overtaken.

Figure it will be more fun to see which names come up and how many places he moves once it happens, rather than watching him eventually catch up to someone.

If you have better suggestions (please be specific) then post 'em up!

Great idea. :thumbsu:

Out of interest, where do you go to get stats like this?

Was after them for a while, then found them in the nether regions of allthestats.com (records section)- this is a pretty comprehensive site for those of us that are footy obssessed.

Interested to see Bob Merrick (3 goals less from 8 games less) and Harry Davie (2 goals more from 9 games less) in the lower-scoring eras of the 1910's and 20's. Those guys must've been good!

certainly got good stats, hard to say how the game was being played back then though, 59 games is a very short career considering the goals being kicked, must've done a knee or something which would've been career-ending at that time.

i spose roughy is still too deep in the pack to worry about how many people he is overtaking but can we show him some love and keep his position up to date each week too? :thumbsu:

Does this have stats like fastest time to reach a set number of goals?

IE. When he reaches 200 goals will he have done it in less games than lloyd, dunstall, hudson, coleman, plugga etc?

that would be interesting

Peter Sumich Kicked something like 45,90,111 in his first 3 seasons in the AFL.

Something I picked up from watching the 1991 Grand Final again.

He was borderline great Sumich and his name often gets lost in discussions surrounding the great forwards of his era.

He was a gun alright.
