Hope you're taking the piss with that one Shreik.

I'm having a bit each way there actually Groggy.

I was hoping for more input on the subject from other club supporters to garner their thoughts, problem is, the majority of responses were North fans squealing for the Bay instead of telling me why it is not a good idea for either club to merge.

I didn't want the 'emotional' argument either, we all know what that is, I want some sort of beliefs or facts or whatever, as long as it makes sense I was interested in reading it.

I really was keen to hear why it wouldn't work or what might prevent it from happening etc etc etc but no, all I got was enough boo-hoo to put the Kleenex company out of business.

If we cheated like you we could have persuaded Lockett to stay with loads of under the table cash, which would mean back to back flags in 97/98.

That fine was 10 years ago now, so why are you making less profit than Norf? Ill answer for you: Its because your business strategy is shit and your club should fold.

Do you actually read the shit you have typed before you hit the submit button ??

Seeing as you have touched on what you believe is the culture of our club, maybe you could bravely give us the lowdown on the Saints culture ??

are you kidding me? don't start that rubbish...*looks at location*..."perth" My mistake, continue thinking that.....

twat, how can clubs claim they have won a bazillion premierships when 7 of the clubs werent even around to compete against them?

people always talk down port when they say they have won their 600 flags or whatever it is

Actually, you may be able to throw some real perspective into this discussion ....

What effect did the Woodville-West Torrens merger have on the two clubs and their supporters, sponsors etc ???

The merger was certainly a fruitful one. Both sides had little success as seperate entities. West Torrens winning only 4 premierships (last flag in 1953), whereas the Peckers were flagless in their short history playing in the SANFL.

The amalgamation was formed in 1990, much to the resistance of both supporter bases. All was forgotten, when after their third season as the Woodville West Torrens Eagles, they snagged their first premiership in 1993, another in 2006 and Runners Up on five occassions. In a generation that is dominated by Central District, the Eagles have enjoyed recent success as one club.

As for the supporter base, they had to live with the fact that merging was the only alternative, or risk the chance of completely loosing their identity. Sponsorship did not become an issue, especially when being relatively successful as the new SANFL franchise. By the way, their bistro is exceptional!

Thanks for that very solid overview.

Good to see that this new entity is now successful onfield, has strong sponsorship and obviously their supporters have found a new lease of football-life.

Can't help but draw comparisons with the the Dogs & Kangaroos here especially the bit about their supporters resistance to the move.

Maybe this example from the SANFL might make some look at the subject with a little less angst and a little more objectivity.

I fear for the Roos right now as they are the ones that the AFL (ie, Vlad & Ando) have in their sights for not accepting the GC move. By hook or by crook, they will make the Kangas pay for that one due to NMFC knocking them back severely upsetting their momentum and plans of expansion into QLD.

There are vast differences between this proposal and the actual Woodville-West Torrens merger. Woodville only entered the SANFL in 63 with Centrals and only reached the finals 3 times. West Torrens had been poor for a number of years. Many were asking why on earth Centrals and Woodville were even admitted to the SANFL for many years after their inclusion.

North and the Bulldogs are very different to Woodville-West Torrens. They have been regularly contending for the finals in the AFL era. North have won premierships in the AFL era. West Torrens hadn't won a SANFL flag since 1953 and had long been out of contention for a flag by 1990. The Bulldogs may not have won a VFL/AFL flag since 1954 but have been to back to back preliminary finals in 2009-2010 so evidently can be competitive in the modern era.

Yes both clubs have financial burdens and they do need to be addressed. Mergers should literally be the last option where the point of no return has been reached. The pain is too horrific. North, Bulldogs, Melbourne and Hawthorn have all had merger plans proposed to them and clubs like Geelong almost went under only a decade ago. Mercifully the fans got out and saved their clubs and the AFL is better off for it. I would rather have two actual clubs in the Bulldogs and North than a composite side in Tassie. (That composite by the way would be rejected, Tassie would need a whole new team to shift them from the current AFL affiliations. Lets be honest, Hawthorn have done well down there)

Let me see ....

- we have got rid of not one but two bodgey administrations
- endured the leanest period in the club's history and came out the other side
- we appointed and then sacked that idiot coach we got from your mob
- we have turned over our list to make it highly competitive
- secured the services of the best player in the competition
- made the finals the last two years after finishing stone-motherless last 5 years ago
- grown sponsorship tenfold (something you wouldn't know about)
- grown membership by 20K (something else you wouldn't know about)
- upgraded our facilities on our own (as opposed to the handout you got from the local government)
- we have not sold our games across the country like a cheap hooker

Funding Contributions:

Stage One – Funded
State Government: $5.00m
City of Melbourne: $2.00m (subject to Council Budget process)
Carlton Football Club: $2.00m
Australian Football League: $3.45m
Other: $0

So that would be $7m from govt and $3m from the AFL.

For the record, you have also sold games. When we knocked back the Gold Coast you immediately went and took one of the vacant games there.
