Re: Who is the 4th club in Burgoyne Deal

Somehow we have done pretty well as a passenger in this mega trade.

I'm not 100% we got 33, but Emma Quayle did post it on her Twitter.

If so, that "official deal" mentioned above is wrong and Geelong are the 4th party.

No it's correct, Geelong are the fourth party, Neil Balme just confirmed it.

Essendon essentially got Williams for an 8 pick downgrade and then sent out Nash for an upgrade from 42 to 33. Pretty good deal I reckon...although I still wonder about recruiting Williams when they won't win a flag in 10-11...but I suppose at 26 he could be around for their next flag.

Pretty happy for the Dons here.

We downgrade from 16 to 24, upgrade from 42 to 33 and get Mark Williams. Nash was delisted anyway.

Gives us picks 10, 24, 26, 33 in a shallow draft, and we probably won't be drafting beyond that pick (next would be 58 anyway). That will likely be the end of our involvement in this trade week.

Mark Williams could be a pretty handy pickup, especially considering we don't really have ANY experienced forwards on out list at the moment (Monfries would be our most experienced at the moment!)......and he's only 26 so I can see him being a part of our next premiership tilt.

Geelong gets a fair deal

Essendon does ok on paper although if Lovett fires and Williams doesn't they might regret giving up 16.

On paper I say Hawks lose but who knows Burgoyne could help them win a flag and Williams is coverable considering Franklin Roughead and Rioli.

On paper Port's pig headed trading tactics appear to reward them. They've got 2 first rounders for a 26 year old and only lost a third rounder and a fourth.

Yeah I don't see how Essendon can get pick 24 as well.

Williams and 33 for 16, 42 and Nash more than fair for them

Hoping like hell that Port doesn't lose #24.

My apologies, I left Pick 24 out as a Port loss.

Still, with picks 8, 9 and 16 they would be happy to forgo the second round.

Re: Burgoyne Deal Done

close to win/win/win i reckon. Cant see Port going much deeper than 3 picks in the draft anyway seeing as we've added nash, schultz and will probably upgrade meyer/stewart or both.

Sounds more like this to me:

Port gets: 9,16, Nash
Port lose: Burgoyne, 40, 56

Hawks get: Burgoyne
Hawks Lose: 9, Williams

Essendon gets: Williams and 33
Essendon lose: pick 16, 58 and Nash

Geelong gets: 40, 56 and 58
Geelong Lose: 33

The Bombers have traded pick No.16 - the selection it received for Andrew Lovett – to Port Adelaide, Pick No. 42 (Geelong) and Jay Nash (Port Adelaide) and acquired Mark Williams (Hawthorn), Pick No. 24 (Port Adelaide) and pick No.33 (Geelong).

Bloody hell, that's needlessly complicated.

Why are Geelong in this anyway?

Re: Who is the 4th club in Burgoyne Deal

yes and that was on traded to the hawks for williams which was on traded to port for Burgoyne making it a four way deal can't understand the confusion pretty simple to me

Hawthorn
Shaun Burgyone (from Port)

Port Adelaide
Jay Nash (from Essendon), draft picks No.9 (from Haw), and 16 (from Ess)

Essendon
Mark Williams (from Haw), draft picks No.24 (from Port) and 33 (from Geel)

Geelong
Draft picks No.40, 56 (from Port) and 42 (from Ess)

confirmed by afl trade tracker.

Essendon must have requested an upgrade on our 3rd round pick (42) to send Nash to Port.

Port, knowing they won't be using 40 or 56, must have looked for someone with a lower pick. Geelong came to the table, possibly due to salaray cap problems and the need to clear out a few players.

Re: Who is the 4th club in Burgoyne Deal

Wow, inventive. So Geelong tips in their 2nd round pick (right at the end of the second round) and gets two 3rd round and a 4th round pick in exchange? WTF for? They got an early pick for the Mummy didn't they? WTF is the use of 3rd round picks in a shallow draft?

Re: Burgoyne Deal Done

I've got this vision: Essendon v Hawthorn at the MCG next year, Hawks in front by 4 points with a minute left, rain pelting down. New Bomber Mark Williams takes a mark 45 metres out, tells all the Hawthorn players to head for the centre square for the bounce because he ain't gonna miss, and effortlessly slots it straight through the middle. Siren sounds after the resultant bounce and Dons win by 2 points.

Yeah, I didn't really understand that. Before they had:

17
28
33
65
81

Now they've got:

17
28
40
42
56
65
81

Same diff, surely? Why do they need two third round picks instead of one (late) second round one?

One of the Cats supporters a couple of pages back said they might now use those later picks to trade for Jesse Smith, which makes sense.

Do a little mixing up their picks now so they can use them to advantage later on.

Happy enough!

It's just a more complicated version of what I posted yesterday, which was basically that we'd give up Burgoyne and 24 for 9 and 16.

We wont use the higher draft picks anyway, so we effectively don't lose them.

3 first round picks we end up with, which is terrific, exactly what we needed to boost our youth stocks up before the Gold Coast came in.
