Quite the opposite, actually. Do a deep dive into how the Hawks have built their list and you'll be shocked.

In their two finals sides, the Hawks only had three first round selections of their own playing - Watson, Weddle and Ward. They have built a seriously competitive side mostly through shrewd trading (Meek, Chol, D'Ambrosio, Ginnivan, Frost, Scrimshaw, Impey), FAs (Amon) and picking exceptionally well with late picks (Lewis pick 76, Worpel pick 45, Nash rookie, Newcombe MSD, Moore 67, Dear 56, Sicily 56, Hardwick 44, CJ rookie)

If there is one thing the Hawks haven't put on display in their rapid rebuild, it's the need to acquire and nail early selections. Grainger-Barras was a pick 6 and will be delisted whilst Mackenzie and Ward (both pick 7) are not in their best side and don't look inspiring pick ups.

The Hawks have continued to make the most of the players available in trade and free agency by adding Battle and Barrass.
Thank you for saving me the trouble of posting this. The Hawks building their current side through hitting the drafts with early picks is the biggest myth in the AFL right now.

He simply makes Collingwood a much better side, Perryman adds much needed depth through the middle and with a bit more luck with injuries to key players, Pies will be right back in the hunt next season, Pies are never down for long.
As long as you can get your forward structure sorted, look like you will be very much in the mix again.

And they risk becoming st kilda in terms of not having enough very elite talent to be capable of making a preliminary final.
Nah, as long as their young brigade don’t get too ahead of themselves they’re going places, as much as I hate to admit it.
GWS are proof that you can have all the “very elite talent” in the world but if you aren’t coached well and don’t work well as a team you won’t get success.

Also, yay Houston. #ontopic

Good post.

Yeah, I mean Calsher Dear wasn't an early round selection but he sure made a massive difference to their rapid rise. Same with Connor Macdonald but your'e right they didn't have too many first rounders which is interesting. Their trading has been elite as you point out.

Doesn’t sound like Carlton were ever in the picture as all their fans seem to believe…
Ports list boss said something that suggested our trade for Dan was never going to be considered and we were never going to move

He’s best friends with JSOS, Ben Silvagni was being classic Ben Silvagni and sooking on X when we didn’t trade for him

So there must’ve been significant links

Ultimately I think Dan has landed at the best club for him

Scuttlebutt going around is that Carlton didn’t have the cap space to accomodate him either, with Weitering to re-sign and TDK likely getting a massive deal next year too.
Suspect that the media leaks of Carlton and North being in the hunt were being fed to the media by Port to try to put pressure on getting a better deal rather than from the clubs in question.

Agreed I’ve seen nothing to suggest an offer in terms of trade was made by Carlton.

We chased Hayward and Stengle earlier in the year and were supposedly in the hunt for Petracca and Houston when they're names came up.

To suggest we have no cap space is a bit of a laugh

You were supposedly in the hunt for Petracca and Houston but never even made them offers?

Doesn’t much sound like you were in the hunt at all tbh.

Blues were fairly clear we were happy to trade for Houston at the right price trade wise.

But please keep spreading false rumours about our cap space which none of us would have a clue about.

Yet you never made him an offer.

Context... Carlton were one of the teams he was interested in moving to, given past relationship with Voss.

Also, stoked to be at the Pies as has relationships there, including with Nick Daicos.

Doubt he was ever going to the Roos as not contending.

During the season was basically communicating with Dees and was destined there... but as time moved on with the off field stuff popping up it changed his mind and was then open to a few clubs.
And thank **** for that.
We would have handed Port not one but TWO nice fat Round 1 picks and said thank you very much, pleasure doing business with you.
Absolutely not what we need.
