Any chance of a rundown of the previous thread? :)

I'm afraid when threads get too big, I give up trying to following what's going on.

There is an actual direct quote from someone involved in the dealings online now:

Hawthorn getting close to signing Josh Gibson and Shaun Burgoyne

Hawthorn getting close to signing Josh Gibson and Shaun Burgoyne

PS: I'm interested in your discussion of Josh Kennedy, it seems the opinion is he's being held back by Jordan Lewis, so I assume he's a younger, but similar style player ? Is he someone Port should be paying attention to ?

I would hate to lose K3 but if he wants to go to get more opportunity I will not hold it against him.

I wouldnt be averse to trading pick 9 and K3 for Burgoyne. He is the kind of player they probably need (that is a hard bodied inside midfielder) and it means we can hang on to pick 25 to trade to the Roos.

The other option of course is to try and trade something like Kennedy, McGlynn and Thorp for Jolly and their second pick (possibly overpaying but a top 5 ruckman doesnt come up for grabs often) and on forwarding the pick and pick 9 to Port and 25/41 to the Roos.

Net:

Hawks lose Kennedy, Thorp, McGlynn & Picks 9, 22, 25 and 41
Hawks gain Gibson, Burgoyne and Jolly

Port loses Burgoyne for picks 9 and 22
Roos lose Gibson for 25 and 41
Swans lose Jolly and second rounder for Thorp, McGlyn and Kennedy

We could then promote Moss and Milne to the senior list but we would still need to draft 3 guys to fill the list.....

You forgot to mention the other gain for Hawthorn - $1 million plus over the salary cap if that happens!!!!

How about this deal:
Port: Shaun Burgoyne + Pick 24 (Second Round)
Hawthorn: Pick 8 + Beau Dowler + Mitchell Thorp

I think it's quite reasonable, you guys are not getting what you want out of them and you already have your two power forwards; you can have another crack at the draft with our second rounder.

Hawthorn wont let them both go, they need some coverage for Franklin/Roughead.
If we asked for Burgoyne + one of the two and the player agreed, Hawthorn would be rushing to get paperwork to us. But that trade would mean one of the players was going for pick 24 which I doubt they would look at - especially given it would destroy their forward backup options.

you guys could do a lot worse than look at kennedy. he is only 21 and he looks to be the goods already. he is a similar mould to lewis, but a bit taller. will be a very good player given an opportunity.

should you trade for him - yes i reckon you should. if you want lewis, then the next best option is a younger version of him.

i dont want to see him go though.

Thats what I was thinking, but cant say I've seen enough footy this year to have an opinion on him.

Strengths: Big and strong, very clean hands, covers the ground well, wins own ball, great pedigree.

Weaknesses: Slow-ish, Daniel Cross syndrome (likes to handpass).

Still very young though and looks an excellent prospect. I would hate to lose him.

HH, if we could keep either Kennedy or Mcglynn I'd consider that trade.

Otherwise our midfield depth is completely decimated :)

Yes and no.....

In the end we would only be losing one midfielder as we get one back in Burgoyne. With the development of Shiels & Whitecross, the return to fitness of Young and Ellis and more time in the middle for Rioli we can probably cover the loss of the other one

Don't forget Moss as well, I was thinking about depth and forgot about him myself.

And on salary cap, as ive posted before, don't forget the impact of Dew and Boyle retiring as well as Croad onto the veterens list (not to mention Bateman following him next year).

The fact is we are already paying the minimum salary cap, we are losing 3 decent salaries for next year (dew, croad and boyle) with another to follow next year. Add to that the loss of Thorp/Kennedy/McGlynn etc and you have probably freed up about 1.2m in 2011 allowing for new draft picks.

Hodge, Mitch, Sewell have all re-sgned this year and are set out for at least 3 years and really only Franklin and Roughie will have any meaningful negotiations before the contract of the likes of Burgoyne/Gibson and Jolly start to fall.

Im sure it is beginning to be a squeeze in the cap but im pretty sure it can be handled.

I'm happy that both Gibson and Burgoyne want to come to Hawthorn on less money offered from their clubs now.

Same it just shows how keen they are to get out of their pathetic clubs and come down to the family club and hopefully play a bit of finals footy!

It looks like we have to lose a player on top of pick 9 to get Burgoyne but if we are playing finals for the next few years its probably worth it.

It will be very interesting to see what norf want for Gibson because they are going to rebuild like we did a few years ago so maybe pick 25 would be enough.

At this stage Kennedy doesn't have Lewis' outside game (not that Lewis is an outside player, but he can find space and then use the ball reasonably well). Kennedy has a strong body and great hands inside, but he is slow, doesn't have a great motor and his kicking isn't great.

Plenty here have compared him to Jobe Watson, he'll never be quick, he'll never be an elite kick, but his ball winning and hands are already very, very good and are only going to get better. You just hope he can improve his kicking enough that it isn't a liability, and that he can continue to improve his engine (every training report I saw from our pre-season had him running the boundary, and it showed this season, last season he could barely get from contest to contest).

He'll make a good match for a club looking for a pure inside player, unfortunately at Hawthorn he is behind quite a few guys in that role. I think he'd be perfect for Sydney, both with their style of play, and playing a lot of games on the smaller ground, but any club trying to free-up some of their better users who are currently stuck under packs could use him.
