Massive round 17 coming up! 5 live games, as usual C grade has the best action!

Got that right Les.

OC in all sorts at the moment, but have everything to play for at NOBs this coming Saturday.
Hopefully a few key inclusions will be the shot in the arm we need to get the job done in the next fortnight.

As an aside, if you ever want to question the utility of running the compulsory Thirds competition in Premier - Premier C, have a glance at the results in Premier B Thirds from yesterday.

Only one game completed with Fitzroy beating Parkdale. Old Xavs walked over Haileybury, OMs walked over Uni Blues, SKOB and Trinity had BYEs as Ajax and Old Brighton have already folded!

Pretty farcical.

Scribe,

The results in C Grade thirds were just as bad. One one game was played. Bottom versus second bottom. Result was a solid win by OI.

Get rid of it, and reconsider who this thirds competition benefits?

Most of the A Grade clubs, St. Kevin's and OM's.
More importantly, the VAFA, by charging fees for the teams that initially enter. Plus fines for forfeits.

From what I saw yesterday, the standard of A Grade thirds was less than average. Neither team would have come close to a D2 reserves team (no offense intended on D2 or the 44 players playing in the OC v OS game).

It was great seeing these 44 players having fun, playing like ability footballers. I feel very sorry when they come up against OX who have ex A Grade grand finalists smashing these teams ever week. It's not what football is about.

Needs to rank the best 3rds teams plus club XVIII at the end of the year and make a 6 grade 3rds comp. make them 8 teams per grade. 14 rounds, standard finals, leaving some of the grounds clear coming close to finals time.

Good points Max but I still reckon the 3rds is a really good concept. Just needs proper support from the VAFA rather than making it yet another way to gouge money from clubs. I reckon about 3 blokes who started the year in our 3s have played ‘A’ grade seniors this year with a similar number last year. So from a development point of view and pathway for the graduating 19s it does have some merit. However it is far from perfect and for the last 2 seasons every single week has been a battle to find sufficient numbers to get them on the field. While our Club XVIII is a very much a social team I don’t know how much longer we can sustain both 3rds and Clubbies

Funny how the ‘compulsory’ 3rds is really ‘optional’ 3rds !. Two ‘A’ grades clubs pulled out on the eve of the season throwing the entire fixture into disarray. Efforts made by clubs to align their 3rds with the seniors over the season were thrown out the window with a hasty re-draw creating a shambles. It’s either compulsory or its not.

Allowing some clubs to have 2 x 3rds sides to the detriment of other clubs is ridiculous. I just don’t get how Xavs have 2 x 3rds teams while other clubs in the proximity battle to fill 1 reserves team let alone a 3rds side. Why the need to stockpile players to that extent? Plenty of these blokes would be good senior players at division clubs.

Club XVII is farce. As long as one club continues to create super sides full of flat track bullies playing against social footballers it will continue to be a joke.

@HJ_Mitch as is stated in the article at http://VAFA.com.au players pay their own way. No one is paid for.

So the only player that represent the VAFA in international competitions are those that can afford it? What about interstate games? The same? This is crap. Why hasn't someone complained about this in the past?

What a round of football.

Top 4 play each other, leaving the bottom 6 also playing each other.

Mazenod, OE and NOBs have no positional issues this week, but by christ everyone else does.

OI vs Marc. OI wins, most likely to get double chance, even if Monash win. Marc win, get double chance. Only if Moansh lose. OI guaranteed double chance if they win and Monash lose.

Who can get relegated.
NOBs - They will be going back down.
OC play NOB's, who have been in OK form. OC haven't. OC slip up, they will most likely join NOBs in D Section.
Pen vs Ban, the loser will be under real preassure if OC and oak win, more so Ban.
Oak lose to OE, Pen and OC win, they will be sweeting on Round 18 results.

Soooo many possibilities.

IMO final positions.

Maz, OI, Mon, Marc, OE, Pen, Oak, OC, Ban, Nobs.

Tips for this week

Maz
OI
Oak
Pen
OC

Yes, certainly a pivotal round of games coming up. Let's hope that the weather doesn't interfere.

Peninsula vs Banyule
NOBS/St Pats vs Old Camberwell
Mazenod vs Monash Blues
Old Ivanhoe vs Marcellin
Oakleigh vs PEGS

Round 17 is going to be a cracker!
Peninsula will defeat Banyule at home - especially for one of its favourite Pirates, Shaun Payze, who plays his 300th game.
NOBs will go down to Old Camberwell. NOBs have been a lot more competitive of late and will give them a fright but the Wellers really need the win.
Mazenod will defeat Monash on their home deck. The Nodders have been slow out of the blocks in a number of their games this season and wouldn't want to give Monash too much of a lead before they wake up in the second half.
Marcellin to win a tight one over Old Ivanhoe. This is a toss of the coin job but I just think the incentive to get the double chance will get the Eagles over the line.
Oakleigh to defeat PEGS. My gut tells me that PEGS have put the cue in the rack with little to play for, whereas the Krushers must win to avoid relegation.

Pirates at home. Well done Shaun 300 is a massive effort!
OC a bit stronger, need to win and will.
Monash just in the match of the round.
Marcellin might get the job done in the second match of the round.
Oaks over PEGS

Good luck and respect the umps! les out.

You still need to win next week don't you?

Mazenod too solid yesterday. Played the conditions well.

Plenty of permutations at both ends of the ladder.
For us, we have a 14 goal break on the Bears and host 7th whilst they host 3rd.

A win to Max's boys over the Bears should see us stay up regardless of our result, unless we get hammered by Oakleigh.
Having said that its mathematically possible for us to win narrowly and get relegated if Old Ivanhoe get smashed at Banyule. Highly unlikely in my view, but you never know.

All we can do is aim to win both games at home, stay in Premier C and then my boys can look forward to a date with the Hoers' in the first semifinal.

Scribe,

How many slabs, Scribe? Last time they smashed us for 3 quarters.

Marcellin we're up for the challenge. According to one of there players, they had the best team for the year.

Please take no account of who they gave best too yesterday.

No. 11 should have been given 3, 2 and 1 votes yesterday.

Wind ruins football.

Looks like the 1st Semi will between

OI vs Monash
And
OI vs Scribe's boys.

Banyule may have smashed you for 3 quarters, Maxy, but you still beat them with a 9 goal last quarter.
Interestingly, Banyule has only won 2 of 8 games at their fortress this year, and one of those games was by a point.

See you there Maxy. Been a few years since the Ashes played in C grade finals. Looking forward to it. It's the time of year when reputations are made.
