Player Watch Callum Brown (Delisted 2022)

Almost amusing watching DeGoey kick a goal from 50 with almost no momentum, put on the backfoot, while Callum is barely able to make contact with the ball.

Oh don't worry, we've seen Goo do the same.

Yeah but you will never see Brown win matches off his own boot like JDG.
I'm not writing Callum off but he can't make the distance from 30m out and he is a massive liability with his kicking.

Yeah, I don't see him as a small forward, he's an inside midfielder. Whether he'll ever get those opportunities at senior level or whether someone like his brother or Rantall will go past him time will tell. He's getting games ahead of Stevo and Ruscoe because he's generally among the leaders of pressure acts. We're essentially sacrificing a little offensive capacity to ensure we either keep the footy inside our F50 or impact the oppositions transition which helps out the defense.

That's just stupid for mine.
Pressure acts is good if it leads to goals directly.
Im not seeing any of Callum's pressure or defensive acts lead to goals.

Thus--Stephenson kicking 2 goals in a "quiet game" is worth more than what Brown is serving up weekly.

Yet in 2020 we average a higher score without Stevo than we do with, and we concede less without than we do with. Better offensively AND defensively without.

Thus, your theory is just perception rather than reality.

It's a team sport and it's the sum of the parts.

Not quite true. If it was an easy fix we would not be having the same conversations after each game. Yes he has potential... but again last night he had 4 kicks resulting in 3 turnovers (couldn't hit a target from 25m). Had a short on goal from 30m and kicked it straight up in air. Last night he had -42 metres gained. The same issues occur each week. He needs to be given a spell so he can work on the issues at hand.
Its pretty clear he (unfortunately) won't cut it long term.

Or he’s just become someone who’s form does not warrant selection. It’s not personal, players are rewarded on form, browns is not good enough
He’ll come good.

He's just not good enough at anything in particular to have any chance of being a long term AFL player (possible nepotism / favouritism notwithstanding). He's terrible - the worst 'regular' player we've had in a long time and he gets picked consistently because he's a nice guy that tries hard. It's not enough.

The only role he can play is inside midfield, but with his talent, strength, size and speed profile and awful kicking skills, he is a VFL level inside midfielder at best.

There is no point in having a 'decent sidestep', if you have no idea where to run to find the ball or of how to dispose of it when you do find it. It's the same as saying that Varcoe has 'good footskills', when a basic eye test shows that he's a turnover merchant who is one of the most unreliable shots at goal at the club.

The comparisons to Blair are also way off. Despite his obvious limitations, Blair was a talented all-round footballer. He was a very reliable kick who had a reasonable goal sense and was strong over head for his height. He was on a completely different level to Brown, and yet even he was borderline best 22 for most of his career.

Callum is covering a lot more ground and does more than just sit in the forward 50. His pressure acts against Brisbane resulted in a well deserved goal late in the third. I understand people wanting him dropped for what may look as lack of output but IMO JT should be the 1st to go and if he was to be dropped there is no way his replacement should be Stevo atm. He needs the ball to fall in his lap.

If Callum goes out then replace him with someone who's going to hunt the pill. Maybe Rantall but I can't see that happening in the finals. Maybe worth a run against Port though

He had a good patch last year then dropped away late in the season, he has been poor for pretty much all of this season bar round 1. He shouldn't be getting games at the moment but the coaches clearly have him best 22 so I suspect he will stay in.

I don't think you can have a bloke who can't kick the footy 30m in your team at AFL level regardless of how evasive he might seem. I've seen blokes who have hardly touched a footy in their life kick the ball longer.

See above. Luke Ball should be the inspiration for Callum. OP killed Ball's ability to kick over 30m but he forged a great career despite his limitations.

The irony that C. Brown might be playing in AFL finals (again) in just a few weeks seems to escape the BF brethren. Whether you like it or not, the powers that be keep playing him (and yet Stepho's in the twos?)....so either BF experts know nuthin...or BF experts know MORE than our CFC selectors.

Ahhhh, happy days!

As much as there is doubt over his ability to have a penetraiting kick.

I feel like he will make it, will be a slow burn though.

Ive seen worse players get games at AFL level consistently
